Extractions: Terry Riley, credited as one of the pioneers of Minimalism in the mid sixties, explored the use of tape loops, developed the time lag accumulator, performed All Night Concerts (10pm-6am). His early compositions were performed, for example, by Toru Takemitsu, and by the experimental music community in England, including the Scratch Orchestra. While in Paris he worked with happening director Ken Dewey and composed the music for his play "The Gift". "Music for the Gift" comprises the Time Lag Accumulator and the Chet Baker Quartet that recorded for Terry at Radio France. These tapes circulated to friends of Terry, including Daevid Allen and Robert Wyatt, who regarded this work as an important break through at the time. The Conservation effort on Terry Riley includes his earliest recordings, all of them previously unavailable with the exception of the Mass Art recording that was limited to 1000 copies. Extractions: California composer Terry Riley launched what is now known as the Minimalist movement with his revolutionary classic "In C" in 1964. This seminal work provided the conception for a form comprised of interlocking repetitive patterns that was to change the course of 20th century music and strongly influence the works of Steve Reich, Philip Glass and John Adams as well as rock groups such as The Who, The Soft Machine, Curved Air, Tangerine Dream and many others. In the 60's and 70's he turned his attention to solo works for electronic keyboards and soprano saxophone and pioneered the use of various kinds of tape delay in live performance resulting in another set of milestone works, "A Rainbow in Curved Air", "Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band", "The Persian Surgery Dervishes" and "Shri Camel". These hypnotic, multi-layered, polymetric, brightly orchestrated, eastern flavored improvisations set the stage for the New Age movement that was to appear a decade or so later. In 1970 Riley made his first of a series of trips to India to study with renowned North Indian vocal master, Pandit Pran Nath. Over the years he has frequently appeared with Pandit Pran Nath as vocal and tamboura accompanist. Terry taught North Indian Raga and music composition during his years at Mills College in Oakland, California, in the 1970's. It was there he met David Harrington, the founder and 1st violinist in the Kronos Quartet and began the long association that has produced 9 string quartets, a keyboard quintet, "Crows Rosary" and a concerto for string quartet and orchestra, "The Sands", commissioned by the Salzberg Festival in 1991. "Cadenza on the Night Plain" was selected by both Time and Newsweek as one of the 10 Best Classical Albums Of The Year. The epic 5 quartet cycle, "Salome Dances for Peace", was selected as the #1 Classical Album Of The Year by USA Today magazine and was nominated for a Grammy.

Extractions: Terry Riley Minimalist pioneer Terry Riley was among the most revolutionary composers of the postwar era; famed for his introduction of repetition into Western music motifs, he also masterminded early experiments in tape loops and delay systems which left an indelible mark on the experimental music produced in his wake. Riley was born June 24, 1935 in Colfax, California, and began performing professionally as a solo pianist during the 1950s; by the middle of the decade he was studying composition in San Francisco and Berkeley, where among his classmates was fellow minimalist innovator La Monte Young. Influenced by John Coltrane and John Cage, he began exploring open improvisation and avant-garde music, and in 1960 composed Mescalin Mix , a musique concrète piece composed for the Ann Halprin Dance Company consisting of tape loops of assorted found sounds. By the early '60s, Riley was regularly holding solo harmonium performances beginning at 10:00 pm and continuing until sunrise, an obvious precursor of the all-night underground raves to follow decades later. After graduating Berkeley in 1961, his next major work was 1963's Music for the Gift , composed for a play written by Ken Dewey; among the first pieces ever generated by a tape delay/feedback system, it employed two tape recorders a setup Riley dubbed the "Time Lag Accumulator" playing a loop of Chet Baker's rendition of
