Extractions: Maya Maya was a television series, filmed entirely on location in India. The series was based on the feature film of the same name and was about an English boy in search of his lost father and his friend and Indian lad who with his elephant, Maya, is fugitive from the law. Slater provided a colourful score that evoked crowded streets, beast-infested jungles, mysterious matters, nostalgic interludes and chase sequences. A well put together suite with the musicians totally committed to this lovely evocative music. Horror Rhapsody : What memories The Mummy's Hand and there is a sly reference to Dukas's The Sorcerer's Apprentice - from, I think, Son of Frankenstein. These scores may now be museum pieces but I submit that Salter's music is every bit as imaginative and persuasive, and more so than many a modern score in this genre. Take the way he manages to put the frigheners up the audience with his sudden high brass screaming/screeching. I would suggest that young composers throw away their synth boards and listen intently to Salter. Maya Reviewer "Zara" Horror Rhapsody Reviewer Ian Lace
Extractions: Crotchet Amazon UK Amazon USA I understand the reasoning behind releasing an album of suspense scores by Hans J. Salter and others. The composers are unfairly underrepresented in record stores. "Universal's Classic Scores of Mystery and Horror" is a step toward remedying that. There are some wonderful orchestral scores presented, and the cheerful exclamation of "John Morgan and Bill Stromberg, keep it going!" is perpetually appropriate. Following Jimmy McHugh's classic Universal fanfare, the heart of the album begins with the second re-recording of Hans Salter's "The Ghost of Frankenstein," expanded to a very exciting 45 minutes. "The Ghost of Frankenstein" is unexpectedly passionate, and through the considerable forward momentum and mettlesome bombast there are no regrets about Hollywood romanticism. The story of Frankenstein's creation is slick melodrama, aimed at exposing social biases, assisting the suicide of terminally ill political agendas, and serving a catalyst for religious thought. Salter mirrors these ideas with great music. Where the score may raise eyebrows is with its derivativeness, including what is quite possibly the first filmusic nods to Gustav Holst's 'Mars, Bringer of War' and Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring." The music leans to repetition, too, but of the evolving, involving sort that rarely grows tiresome.

Extractions: Review by Jeff Berkwits Legendary Hollywood Maya , a short-lived mid-1960s TV series. The initial half of the album is dedicated to the Maya motifs. Filmed in India, this project afforded Salter an opportunity to build upon some of the ersatz ethnic compositions he'd previously penned for various Mummy films and run-of-the-mill adventure tales like Man-Eater of Kumaon (1948) and Bengal Brigade (1954). "Maya Goes on an Expedition" "Crowded City Bazaar" and "Kashmir Dancers" exude an exotic Asian ambiance, while cuts like "Bombay" and "Maya's Mud Bath" impart a lighthearted, slightly out-of-kilter air similar to the themes often heard on such less-than-serious SF television shows as Lost in Space (a program which, not coincidentally, also now and again featured numbers written by Salter).

Extractions: From http://www.grovemusic.com Salter, Hans J(ulius) (b Vienna, 14 Jan 1896; d Studio City, CA, 23 July 1994). American composer and conductor of Austrian birth. He studied at the University of Vienna with Guido Adler, Egon Wellesz and Hans Gal, and at the Vienna Music Academy with Schreker. Later, while working as an assistant conductor in Viennese theatres, he studied conducting with Weingartner and composition with Berg. From 1930 to 1933 he composed musicals and drama scores for UFA Studios in Neubabelsberg. He emigrated to Hollywood in 1937. Originally hired as an orchestrator for Universal Studios, Salter was soon promoted to the rank of composer. With Frank Skinner he wrote music for serials, westerns, dramas, Deanna Durbin musicals and Abbott and Costello comedies. Although he received six Academy Award nominations for his musical comedy and drama scores, he is remembered today chiefly for his contribution to horror films such as The Wolf Man (1941), Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943) and House of Frankenstein (1944). When he retired in 1967, he had completed scores for over 200 films. He was honoured with lifetime achievement awards from the Society of Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy Films, and the Society for the Preservation of Film Music. He received an additional tribute at the Viennale Film Festival in 1993. WORKS Film scores: It Started with Eve, 1941; The Wolf Man, 1941, collab. F. Skinner, C.
