Tickets for the event are $5 and can be reserved after Tuesday, Jan. 29, by calling (563) 588-6300 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Peter Schickele is internationally recognized as one of the most versatile artists for his work as a composer, musician, author and satirist. As a musician, he has composed over 100 works for symphony orchestras, choral groups, movies and television. His varied musical endeavors include projects with Disney and the National Symphony Orchestra. Playing his well-known role as P.D.Q. Bach, Schickele has become one of the most accomplished satirists of the 20th century. The Arts at Clarke Gold Series includes six nationally and internationally recognized performers, with styles ranging from Celtic music to jazz. Other performances in the Gold Series will include old-time string band Acoustic Mayhem (March 12), and Hunter Fuerste and his American Vintage Orchestra (April 16). The six Gold Series performances combine with 35 other events including drama productions, music performances and art exhibits to complete the Arts at Clarke calendar.

His bassoon playing is mediocre, but his other musical talents are prodigious. Schickele is one of the most prolific, accomplished, and underrated composers of the 20th century. He is underrated primarily because his stock in trade is parody and satire. Thirty-one years ago, Schickele then an instructor at Juilliard introduced the world to P.D.Q. Bach, "the oddest of Johann Sebastian Bach's twenty-odd children." P.D.Q. Bach is Schickele's brainchild a bad composer who is as much plagiarist as creator. Through P.D.Q., Schickele has been able to demonstrate his broad, deep, and unparalleled knowledge of music ranging from baroque and classical through romantic and atonal, Tin Pan Alley and rock-and-roll. For twenty-five years, Schickele traveled around the world in the persona of "The Professor," who had uncovered P.D.Q. Bach's many works. In reality, Schickele composed every opus attributed to P.D.Q. Performing with symphony orchestras, Schickele offered a humorous look at the super-serious world of classical music. His shows were at once slapstick, athletic, tuneful, and erudite. All the while, of course, Schickele had his serious side. He was composing under his own name both popular and symphonic music. (He wrote the music for an album of folk songs by Joan Baez, for instance, as well as a large number of chamber pieces, including string quartets and smaller works.) For the past several years, he has taken his love of all forms of music to the airwaves, hosting the program "Schickele Mix" on Public Radio International (PRI). "Schickele Mix" is heard locally on WETA-FM, each Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
