The son of a schoolmaster, he showed an extraordinary childhood aptitude for music, studying the piano, violin, organ, singing and harmony and, while a chorister in the imperial court chapel, composition with Salieri (1808-13). By 1814 he had produced piano pieces settings of Schiller and Metastasio, string quartets, his first symphony and a three-act opera. Although family pressure dictated that he teach in his father's school, he continued to compose prolifically; his huge output of 1814-15 includes Gretchen am Spinnrade and (both famous for their text-painting) among numerous songs, besides two more symphonies, three masses and four stage works. From this time he enjoyed the companionship of several friends, especially Josef von Spaun, the poet Johann Mayrhofer and the law student Franz von Schober. Frequently gathering for domestic evenings of Schubert's music (later called 'Schubertiads'), this group more than represented the new phenomenon of an educated, musically aware middle class: it gave him an appreciative audience and influential contacts (notably the Sonnleithners and the baritone J.M. Extractions: It was in Vienna itself that Franz Schubert was born in 1797. When he was very young his father and his older brother taught him to play the violin and the piano. In a few months his proficiency surpassed. So when the family realized Franz abilities they did everything they could with their modest income to get a good education for the boy. He was sent to the Stadtkonvikt in Vienna. Schubert left the Stadtkonvikt in 1813 to study teaching . During the three years that followed he worked as a low paid teacher. But he did not forget the music he loved. At this time he was extremely prolific. During a couple years he wrote two symphonies, 200-300 songs including the masterpiece "Gretchen am Spinnrade". All at the age of 17-18 years old. It was for the songs Schubert first became famous. But during this time he began to have financial difficulties. In 1815 he met Franz von Schober, an independently wealthy follower of Schubert's music. He persuaded Schubert to leave the teaching job which was affecting his composing, and come and live with him. Schubert left his old job and was now a free musician, without a steady income. It was at the home of Schober where Schubert met the great singer Johann Michael Vogl. Together they started the Schubertiads. They amused themselves, and together listened to Schubert at the piano and Vogl sing Schubert`s songs. Even if these were happy days, Schubert became anxious. He had no income and no home. He therefore worked one summer for a hungarian prince. He taught his two daughters to play the piano. But the only thing there, that could inspire Schubert's own composing was one of his pretty young students. Therefore much of the music from this time was written for piano four hands. But one summer was enough and he returned to his friends in Vienna.

Extractions: FRANZ LISZT (1811-1886) Excerpts from the sleeve notes Paris, March 1831, and the talk of the French capital was the appearance of the hitherto unrivalled Paganini. The Times correspondent was at a loss as to how to describe the phenomenon. He has performed thrice at the Académie Royale de Musique, and each time with increasing applause. Language cannot do justice to his wonderful exertion. [] New powers are given to the instrument, which even the most eminent musicians declare, they were not aware was in its compass. He plays entirely from memory, without the intervention of a desk between him and his enchanted listeners. His appearance is singular and denotes the enthusiast [sic]. Strong black hair curls in profusion round his face, which is of an ashy paleness. His eyes flash fire, his nostrils appear distended, and could we hide the organ from which he produces such magic tones, he would be an excellent representative of a prophet foretelling the future. This, then, is the background to the composition of the Six Grandes Etudes de Paganini. The first fruit of his Paganini-inspired labours was the Grande Fantaisie de bravoure sur La Clochette de Paganini (S420) which appeared in 1832. It utilises material from the last movement of Paganinis Violin Concerto No 2 in B minor. Its main theme, itself based on an old Italian melody, is familiar from Paganinis inclusion of a little bell in the score (hence its nickname of La Clochette and, in Liszts later study using the same theme, La Campanella). The Clochette fantasy remains one of the most extraordinarily difficult works ever written for the piano but, as Busoni noted, the work shows an original mind peeping through, a constrained emotion struggling for expression. There are spiccato effects and terrifying leaps with which Liszt sought to simulate Paganinis dizzying violin feats.
