Shanghai-born composer Bright Sheng's Music Alive residency in May 2001 will coincide with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra's Pacific Rim Festival, a music festival being mounted by the Symphony in conjunction with the Seattle Art Museum's exhibition entitled Encompassing Heaven and Earth: Ancient Chinese Art from Sichuan. A survivor of China's Cultural Revolution, Mr. Sheng earned an undergraduate degree from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music before fleeing China. After arriving in New York in 1982, Mr. Sheng attended Queens College, CUNY and Columbia University, studying with Leonard Bernstein, George Perle, and Hugh Weisgall, among others. Gerard Schwarz commissioned Mr. Sheng's H'un (Lacerations), a work expressing the anguish of the Chinese spirit, which made such a profound impact when it was premiered by Mr. Schwarz and the New York Chamber Symphony in 1988 that the New York Philharmonic scheduled it for its 1993 European tour, and the Poland National Philharmonic featured it at the 1994 Warsaw Autumn Festival. Other commissions quickly followed from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the Shanghai Symphony, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and from Yo-Yo Ma, David Zinman, Leonard Bernstein, Peter Serkin, and others. Mr. Sheng, who is currently a faculty member at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, served as composer-in-residence with the Seattle Symphony from 1992 to 1994 and as artist-in-residence at the University of Washington from 1994 to 1995.

Extractions: MUSIC November 12, 2000 Composer and University of Michigan professor Bright Sheng is praised for the organic fusion of his Chinese heritage with the Western orchestral tradition. But his most impressive achievement may be more fundamental: His music packs a strikingly emotional and intellectual wallop. Bright Sheng University of Michigan composer "Bright Sheng: 'Flute Moon,' 'China Dreams,' 'Postcards,' " Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Lan Shui, conductor; Sharon Bezaly, flute Bis, Djursholm, Sweden It is full of muscular passion and occasionally serene nostalgia, but lacking in the twin sins of the present era: postmodern irony and neo-romantic sentimentality. The current CD offers ample evidence of Sheng at his best. Like much of Sheng's music, "Flute Moon" (1999) suggests Bartok in terms of its percussive intensity, orchestration, modality, controlled dissonance and integration of folk materials. "China Dreams" (1995) juxtaposes exquisite lyricism with driving rhythmic vitality. "Postcards" (1997) brilliantly evokes the contours of Chinese music while apparently avoiding direct quotation. This music shouts, whispers, sighs and above all compels attention. By Mark Stryker, Free Press music critic

Extractions: Kalevi Aho, who was born in 1949, combines a personal idiom with a great knowledge, appreciation and respect for the tradition of music. Aho acknowledges an early debt to Shostakovich but soon developed a recognizable voice of his own. Like his great predecessor, his music seems to have a strong narrative element without being programmatic. It might be said to be more concerned with the life of the soul than with physical events and seems to strike a resonant chord in many listeners. As such it has collected a wide following. BIS has already recorded six of Kalevi Aho's symphonies. The third symphony began life early on in his career but was laid aside while he was writing his fourth symphony. He felt unable to complete the orchestration at the time. The work was originally conceived as a violin concerto but turned itself into what the composer describes as a 'sinfonia concertante'. Aho has since used this model in three of his later symphonies scored, respectively for organ and orchestra, trombone and orchestra and six percussionists with orchestra. The composer has described his vision of the work, how the individual is pitched against the mass and how the individual seems doomed to a disastrous end - though, right at the end, there is an intimation of a possible reconciliation.

"Sheng is a fresh voice in cross-cultural music," the Foundation Committee further noted. "He will continue to be an important leader in exploring and bridging musical traditions." In addition to composing, Sheng is an active conductor and pianist, and frequently serves as musical advisor to leading orchestras and festivals. He has performed in many of the Keng Sen, Artistic Director of Theatre Works (Singapore), has engaged in cross-cultural work with fellow Asian artists for 6 years. He is known for his rejection of authenticity and his embracing of multiple realities and hybridity within Asia. Although his training is in contemporary performance from New York University, he often brings the strength of traditional concepts into his work. In 1994, Keng Sen conceptualized The Flying Circus Project, a creative strategy laboratory, which is a robust encounter between contemporary arts and traditional performance. This is an intercultural workshop amongst Asian artists which explores the fields of theatre, music, dance, visual arts and finally at the end of 2000, documentary film. One hundred artists from countries such as India, Indonesia, Korea, Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam have taken part thus far in 1996 and 1998. In December 2000, the most ambitious laboratory so far plans to explore religious performance and the urban artist with artists and ritualists from China, Japan, Philippines, Taiwan and Tibet. The key elements of The Flying Circus Project are reinvention, juxtaposition and cultural negotiation.

Further, the film refutes the idea of the sisters economic independence even before the issue is raised, as moralizing opening titles explain that " the maintenance of [the comb sisters] unmarried status had never brought to them the happiness or freedom they expected." Even in its very first scenes, the film portrays the womens industrial working conditions as an institutional barbarity equal to arranged marriages, once again overdetermining the aesthetic of suffering under the aegis of an aesthetic of historical realism. The downplaying of the sisters economic independence also has the effect of scrubbing from them the pathological stench of Mulan-ism or "unnatural" maleness, as the impossible burden of masculinity is placed entirely on the shoulders of Miss Sheng. While transnational Xiu Xiu or Raise the Red Lantern may peddle postcards of China to the West, it is also true that the subdued lyricisms and moderately pretty cinematographies of middle-budget films such as

Extractions: page Rey Chow has defended Zhang Yimou against Chinese intellectuals, such as Dai Jinhua, who accuse him of selling out to the orientalist gaze by arguing that his emphases on comely, over-composed surfaces are not tricky diversions from "real" meanings that dont exist, but are meaningful as a sort of "genuine" superficiality, as a semi-deliberate parody of the Western gaze, an "orientals orientalism" that tries to juggle self-identity and national identity in a post-imperialist, poker-faced struggle to go beyond the two. While such a self-conscious parody would complicate an attempt to reduce Zhangs position to "passive" or "feminine," and while a sense a self-consciousness is indeed probably present in Zhangs later films, such as Red Lantern and The Story of Qui Ju (1992), it seems unlikely that this argument can explain the excessive prettiness of Red Sorghum , for in 1987 the value of the Fifth Generations "stunning sensuous qualities" had not yet been fully established as an international commodity ripe for parody. But even if we tentatively accept Zhangs films as self-parodies, I am not convinced that such non-confrontational parodies are actually effective, for they are so deeply encoded within the oriental aesthetic they allegedly rebel against that they can be mistaken for authenticity even Chow admits that urban Chinese probably wouldnt know exactly how accurate are the rural rituals that Zhang "parodies." I would say that parody, hardly a salvation in itself, is rather the obligatory curse of transnational consumerism, a mundane curse that dumbly points out the circuitry of the cross-cultural gaze without being able to disrupt it.
