In his own day he already achieved international fame as a composer, organist, harpsichordist and teacher. A contemporary honored him with the name Orpheus of Amsterdam . His numerous keyboard works are of exceptionally high quality and enjoy considerable popularity. The BBC Singers will be performing two works by Sweelinck, Ballo del Granduca and Onder een Linde groen , during the upcoming performance at Amsterdam's Oude Kerk during the GOING DUTCH Music Week, 5 - 12 October. He was lauded by a contemporary poet as ‘The Orpheus of Amsterdam'. In a 1606 portrait of Sweelinck, probably by his brother, the composer looks directly at the viewer, holding his left hand in a rhetorical gesture meaning; "Listen to me - I have something important to say." To commemorate his achievements, a new nine CD set of the complete keyboard works Radio Netherlands has produced a two-part programme on Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. Click to hear in full. Part one: A Church Organist Part two: A Celebrated Master of the Dutch composer has been produced by Radio Netherlands' Music Department, in association with NM Classics. His music for organ and harpsichord is considered one of the most important repertoires in both early keyboard music and Dutch music history. Influence But little is actually known about Sweelinck's life. He was born in Deventer in 1562, but his family moved to Amsterdam two years later where his father took the post of resident organist at the Oude Kerk. He studied organ with his father and by the age of 18 had replaced him as the church organist - a post Sweelinck would hold until his death in 1621. He traveled to numerous Dutch towns to inspect organs, but only once went beyond the border of the Republic - in 1604 he journeyed to Antwerp to buy a harpsichord for the city of Amsterdam.

He was the most influencial teacher of his time and many of the composers in the following generation had been his students. He is famous for his music for the harpsichord and choir but he also wrote 7 small pieces for the lute.
