Electro Acoustic Ensemble - EMAIL PROJECT 2000 karen tanaka The Song of Songs (1996) For 'cello and electronics Email discussionswith the performer. karen tanaka is one of Japan's leading living composers. http://www.eae.org/tanaka1.html
Extractions: For 'cello and electronics Email discussions with the performer Karen Tanaka is one of Japan's leading living composers. She Studied in Paris with Tristan Murail and worked at IRCAM as an intern. Tanaka is based in Paris though she works frequently in Japan. The 'Song of Songs' is a later work, and the composer makes use here of technology to develop her musical language. The version to be performed in Hull, U.K calls for an amplified cello, and reverberation, adjusted by the acoustic of the hall to give a combined reverb time of 4 -5 seconds. Recently Karen Tanaka's love of nature and concern for the environment has influenced her works.
Electro Acoustic Ensemble - EMAIL PROJECT 2000 Back to karen tanaka page, LEARNING AND PERFORMING 'SONG OF SONGS'by karen tanaka GP Hi John, Generally and this is one of the http://www.eae.org/tanaka2.html
Extractions: by Karen Tanaka G.P: Hi John, Generally - and this is one of the negative aspects of electro-acoustic music using live performers, unless you're using monitors (which would be rather exaggerated for a hall of the size we'll be playing in in Hull) - the performer(s) is positioned slightly behind the speakers in order to avoid feedback, assuming the players are amplified of course. So it's actually very hard for the player(s) on stage to have an idea of how the music is coming across for the audience, no matter how many speakers are used. That's one point, the other is that since the cello is amplified the person at the mixing board will be able to fine tune the balance very easily. The hall where we'll be playing is, after all, not very big, and the Tanaka piece is in stark contrast to the Dolden, where the pre-recorded element of the piece is far from being the kind of subtle background colour we have in the Tanaka. Regarding timing, I presume you mean the notion technique Tanaka chose to use here. Clearly, if we look at the Dolden, we can see that an alternative to writing her one-second-unit delineations, Tanaka could have just put the whole thing in 4/4 at crotchet=60, with a stop watch for reference. As it is, the way it's written does take a little while to get used to, but again, in contrast to the Dolden, where it is very important that the live performer and the tape are exactly coordinated a lot of the time, the mood of the Tanaka if very different and it's not going to disturb things too much if the cellist takes some freedoms with the tempo for expressive purposes and gets a little out of sync.
