Extractions: by Paul Steenhuisen F ollowing the attractively hectic November concert schedule, Toronto's new music activity declines in quantity for December/January, perhaps due to the fact that someone named Carol has so many door-to-door singing performances prior to Xmas. Regardless, and consumer culture aside, art music persists, and there are performances to attend. We have played this show everywhere except underwater. Tallulah Bankhead. Counting is the religion of this generation, it is its hope and its salvation. Gertrude Stein It's not the voting that's democracy, it's the counting. Tom Stoppard While some post-modernists will argue that the 12-tone method and serialism were little more than the totalitarian fascination with counting to 12 (1 for each note in the scale), listeners will have the opportunity to hear for themselves, when two of the USA's pioneers will be heard. F irst up will be the late Stephan Wolpe, heard in New Music Concerts December 1 event featuring the Canadian premiere of Enactments. The heady trio of David Swan, Stephen Clarke, Marc Couroux will play pianos, while Fujiko Imajishi performs Reconciliation for solo violin, and the Accordes String Quartet will play Within, above, beyond, both by guest composer Geoffrey Palmer. At 7 PM, musicologist and Wolpe scholar Austin Clarkson will discuss Wolpe's work in The Art of Action: Wolpe and the New York School of Musicians and Painters. In this, the 100th anniversary of his birth, Wolpe's music is revisited, to explore the reflected spirit of Dada, the Bauhaus, abstract expressionism, and improvisational jazz - the most engaging artistic movements of wherever he happened to be in his life.

Extractions: It started with music. I was trained as a musician since my pre-school years. My mother put me in a very special school called Jiyu-Gakuen in Japan, before I went to the elementary school. Jiyu-Gakuen, which translates as "Learning Garden of Freedom," gave early musical training to pre-school children. We learnt perfect pitch, harmony, playing the piano, and composing simple songs. Some very famous Japanese composers came out of this school. One of the most important things I learnt in that school, though I only knew how important it was in hindsight, was to listen to the sounds in ones' own environment. We received homework in which you were supposed to listen to the sound of the day, and translate each sound into musical notes. This made me into a person who constantly translated the sounds around her into musical notes as a habit.

Extractions: Slowly Watching Memory An analysis of Morton Feldman's "Rothko Chapel" Introduction " Rothko Chapel " Morton Feldman composed "Rothko Chapel” as a tribute to his friend, the American painter, Mark Rothko. In 1971, at the request of the Menil Foundation of Houston, Texas, Rothko created an environment in which his 14 monumental paintings played a central role. These paintings act as objects on which all visitors to the Chapel, religious or non-religious could use for meditation. The life and work of Morton Feldman was very similar to that of Mark Rothko. Both were of eastern European Jewish heritage; both were involved in creating a new form of abstract art; and both were motivated to discover the mystery of perception within art. Feldman’s "Rothko Chapel", although abstract in its general unfolding, presents the listener with particular problems in regard to semantic understanding. mystery of hearing Feldman’s "Rothko Chapel.” Memory The concept of memory seems to play an almost mystical role in his work. The Hungarian writer György Konrád describes memory as "a process of selection from the past combined with a large amount of fantasy”. Feldman's music acts as a presentation of this selection process within the boundaries of his very personal way of writing music.
