A One Of A Kind Composer PERSONALITIES A one of a kind composer. Veteran maestro yannis xenakis'mark on contemporary music retraced. Every year the Huddersfield http://internet.ana.gr/hermes/1998/oct/personal.htm
Extractions: PERSONALITIES Every year the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in Britain attracts composers, performers and aficionados of contemporary music. The 20th such festival, held last November, featured two veteran "modern masters", each an "eminence gris" of the international music scene. Eighty-year-old Lou Harrison couldn't make the journey from the United States to hear his music played, but Yannis Xenakis, 75, despite a recent illness appeared. Described by one critic as "the firebrand of European avant-garde", the performance of his compositions underlined this reputation. New pieces for British audiences were Xenakis' "Windungen", "Zythos", and "Peaux", as well as the second ever performance of "O-Mega", a miniature percussion concerto, along with the 1984 "Thallein", a work that sent many critics into "rhapsody". One of the reviews for the latter work called it "20th century music in its purest..." During his career, the durable Greek composer has been uncompromising in life as well as in his music. A civil engineering graduate from Athens' Polytechnic, Xenakis' first great love was mathematics. He briefly studied music theory in Greece, before fleeing to Paris during the Greek civil war (1946-49) for his leftist activities. He was sentenced in absentia to death and didn't step foot in his native land until 1974.

Extractions: Mythologies of the Book (page 1) Introduction The exhibition "Mythologies of the Book" is a first attempt to examine the many-sided relations Greek artists developed with books and the concepts of speech and writing at different times from the early twentieth century to this day. Our aim was to bring together and showcase some of the outstanding and most worthy examples of this intrinsic tendency to explore the huge area of interaction between language, writing and image. The works shown in this exhibition constitute parts of various independent bodies of artistic research; in these, the appearance of speech or writing incorporated in books or in other reading and communication media, such as video or sound reflects a consistent method of approaching the significance of the visual language or represents some major landmark in the evolution of the artists lingual identity. At a first reading, this collection can reveal the particular traits in each oeuvre, which point to the different perceptions of language and the different aesthetic and theoretical foundations for articulating a new visual language which, in each case, touches upon a different aspect of the core of each eras contemporary ideologies. The artwork as a text and book incorporating speech and writing points clearly to the dual nature of art, as physical and tangible space but also as a predominantly intellectual and spiritual space. At the same time, the issue of books and the way they were dealt with throughout the later period of Greek art provides new information on the many paths followed by Greek artists in their quest for the aesthetic and theoretical points of reference each of them chose to adopt.

Extractions: Greek-French composer Xenakis dead PARIS (AP) Composer Iannis Xenakis, known as one of contemporary music's most innovative and erudite creators, died Sunday in his Paris home, the Association of Friends of Xenakis said. He was 78. Also a mathematician and engineer, Xenakis first attracted attention as an architect, working with Le Corbusier on the French designer's famous pavilion for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. For the fair, Xenakis composed an electronic work that brought recognition to his musical talent: ''Concerto PH,'' whose sole sound source was amplified burning charcoal. Greek Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos said Xenakis would be remembered for compiling ''one of the most progressive chapters in the history of music.'' Claude Helleu, secretary-general of the Association of Friends of Xenakis, called the composer, ''one of the greatest geniuses of this century.'' ''He connected his notions of mathematics and his profession of architecture to a unique oeuvre that we're realizing has greater and greater importance,'' Helleu said. Born in Romania on May 29, 1922 to wealthy Greek parents, Xenakis moved to Greece at age 10.
