Product Description

John Rawls never published anything about his own religious beliefs, but after his death two texts were discovered which shed extraordinary light on the subject. A Brief Inquiry into the Meaning of Sin and Faith is Rawls’s undergraduate senior thesis, submitted in December 1942, just before he entered the army. At that time Rawls was deeply religious; the thesis is a significant work of theological ethics, of interest both in itself and because of its relation to his mature writings. “On My Religion,” a short statement drafted in 1997, describes the history of his religious beliefs and attitudes toward religion, including his abandonment of orthodoxy during World War II.

The present volume includes these two texts, together with an Introduction by Joshua Cohen and Thomas Nagel, which discusses their relation to Rawls’s published work, and an essay by Robert Merrihew Adams, which places the thesis in its theological context.

The texts display the profound engagement with religion that forms the background of Rawls’s later views on the importance of separating religion and politics. Moreover, the moral and social convictions that the thesis expresses in religious form are related in illuminating ways to the central ideas of Rawls’s later writings. His notions of sin, faith, and community are simultaneously moral and theological, and prefigure the moral outlook found in Theory of Justice.

4-0 out of 5 stars John Rawls y Dios.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Brief Review
A Brief Inquiry is Rawl's undergraduate thesis. You can see that he was formulating his political philosophy in this theological work. His focus on community in explaining sin and faith is an interesting take on the traditional definitions of sin and faith which involve rebellion or obedience to God.Although this interpretation of the meaning of Sin and Faith might not be the traditional one, it is orthodox nonetheless. It is interesting to see what kind of philosopher Rawls was becoming even at a young age.

Stunning book. To think of any undergraduate writing a thesis this brilliant! It gives you a chance to see the evolution of Rawls' thinking, and the introductory essays by Nagel and Adams are excellent. ... Read more

Product Description
The "Culture Wars" have produced a lot of talk about religion, morals, and values, with both sides often hearkening back to our Founding Fathers. Here is your chance to learn firsthand what two of the most influential pillars of the American Republic thought about these perennial topics. From 1812 to July 4, 1826—when ironically death claimed both men—Thomas Jefferson and John Adams exchanged letters touching on these still controversial issues.

These little-known letters contain many surprising revelations. In the 1800 presidential election, in which the Republican Jefferson opposed the Federalist Adams, religion was a topic of hot debate, as reflected in this correspondence written many years after. What was it about Jefferson’s religious beliefs that provoked such vitriol against him in the campaign? And what was there in Adam’s theology that prompted certain Calvinists to label him "no Christian"? Though they expressed different opinions, Jefferson and Adams agreed on what they called the "corruptions of Christianity." Despite their criticisms and their critics, both men considered themselves Christians, in different senses of the term.

Hearing these champions of liberty and freedom of religion speak out frankly on church and state, the Bible, Jesus, Christianity, morality, and virtue, modern readers may well ask themselves whether either of these Founding Fathers could today be elected president. Editor Bruce Braden has done us all a service by collecting this revealing and intimate historical correspondence on topics that continue to stir emotions and debate in the 21st century. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Early religous discussion among the founding fathers
There's lots of talk about religion and politics and separations of church and state: here's what two of the leaders of the early American Republic thought about religion and politics and their affect on American life in "YE WILL SAY I AM NO CHRISTIAN": THE THOMAS JEFFERSON/JOHN ADAMS CORRESPONDENCE ON RELIGION, MORALS AND VALUES. Granted, it's a specialty item which will probably receive its best audience in advanced high school to college-level holdings; but the letters between the two greats offer frank assessments of church, liberty and freedom of religion and should not be missed by any serious reader of American history or political science.

Product Description
Edited and Compiled by Doug Phillips

Born in 1767, John Quincy Adams entered his country's service while a mere lad as secretary to the Russian Embassy and remained through life a public servant, filling successively the posts of secretary, ambassador, United States Senator, Secretary of State, President, and finally Representative in Congress.

However, all of these remarkable achievements are secondary to his role as father. Though a busy man, Adams made it his priority to study the Bible and to train his son to love God's Holy Word. His example stands out for all men as a shepherd who loved his family flock. This volume contains nine personal letters of counsel and admonition that he penned to his son while traveling away from home. ... Read more

Product Description

This engrossing and meticulously researched volume reexamines the decisions made by Dwight D. Eisenhower and his staff in the crucial months leading up to the Battle of the Bulge. In late August 1944 defeat of the Wehrmacht seemed assured. On December 16, however, the Germans counterattacked. Received wisdom says that Eisenhower's Broad Front strategy caused his armies to stall in early September, and his subsequent failure to concentrate his forces brought about deadlock and opened the way for the German attack. Arguing to the contrary, John A. Adams demonstrates that Eisenhower and his staff at SHAEF had a good campaign strategy, refined to reflect developments on the ground, which had an excellent chance of destroying the Germans west of the Rhine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, If Not As Good As His First One
I decided to read this book on the strength of Adam's If Mahan Ran the Great Pacific War , which I read and thoroughly enjoyed. This book was much like that one, but for whatever reason not quite as good.

The book examines the operations and decision making of the Western Allies in the period between the Cobra breakout from Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Adams notes a number of shortcomings and does a good job of explaining what should have been done. Along the way, he gives an excellent summary of the Allies' logistical woes and dispels a few myths. It is an excellent inventory of the mistakes made as well as suggestions for improvement.

I think the reason the book does not quite measure up to If Mahan... is that Adams had no overarching touchstone source such as Mahan to compare the actions of Bradley, Eisenhower, Patton et al to as he did in the first volume. That being said, this was still an excellent book, well written, with a clearly and convincingly argued central thesis, I recommend it highly, although not the book is not one a reader should attempt without a fairly extensive familiarity with operations in NW Europe in 1944.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional investigation and summary into why the Western Allies stalled west of the Rhine River
Mr Adams is a business man and amateur historian that has written another superlative book on WWII. His earlier book dealt with the operational appraisal of the Pacific War. The keystone to the author's books is that they're highly researched and thought out and include many primary examples to back up his comments. Included in the narrative are written orders, communiques, diary entries, referencing important comments from key people. The extensive Bibliography of primary and secondary sources will support this contention of thoroughness. A creditable Notes section is also provided.

The author's emphasis is on the operational details with special attention for the logistical and command and control problems facing the Allies in the fall of 1944. It will be shown that the logistical problems of supplying the front line had a monumental affect on the prosecution of the war and the impact it had on the command decisions made, especially Montgomery's. It will also be shown the differences in war doctrine (narrow front - wide front, single prong - dual prong) between Eisenhower and Montgomery will have a major disruptive influence on the battlefield as well as between Allies. Montgomery will constantly badger, humilitate and try to wear down Eisenhower into following his game plan for the capture of Berlin by the northern route. Just like Operations Comet and Market Garden were failures, Montgomery's plan for 21st AG to attack in the north while most of the US forces played supporting roles would have also been a failure but on a scale that could've eclisped the casualties of the "Bulge". Montgomery had grossly underestimated German strength and with Model in charge the results would have been terrible for the British / Canadians and the attached Americans as their flanks grew.

There are many books covering the controversy between commanders and to a lesser extent the supply problems of getting fuel, ammo and supplies to the front line which by September was approaching the Rhine River but this is the best account that I've read on the subject.
The author has meticulously researched and assembled information from primary and secondary sources, using hundreds of orders, communiques, diary entries, quotes from key personnel, and data from biographies to fortify his narrative as to the causes and reasons why the Western Allies hit a brick wall in September after a momentous August.
Nightly reports sent to Brooke from Montgomery, the letters Eisenhower sent Marshall, the field orders Eisenhower sent to his "Lieutenants" are important and given ample attention. The author will show the orders that were intended for Montgomery were being altered by British sympathers on SHAEF giving Montgomery greater latitude than Eisenhower wanted to give the Field Marshall. It will also be shown the many times Montgomery tried to discredit Eisenhower to Brooke and Churchill in order to have Eisenhower removed as Supreme Commander. It will also be shown Montgomery's obsession in his narrow front, single phase advance on Berlin and that once Montgomery secured enough ports to fulfill his supply needs for 21st Army Group, he had no desire to capture Antwerp, or the Sheldt which were to be used for Bradley's 12th Army Group.

It was shown that had 21st AG tackled Antwerp and the Sheldt in the opening days of September when the Germans were ill prepared that the objectives would have been quickly secured and the Allies could have started using the port almost immediately. Instead Montgomery was negligent, maybe worse, and Antwerp would not be used until November.
By September the 1st and 3rd Armies were hamstrung by lack of supplies and were forced to slow their advance. This condition was exacerbated by Montgomery's risky plan, Operation Market-Garden which Eisenhower agreed to without thought or consultation with his planners. The supply pirority was raised for Montgomery for this operation at the expense of Patton which had been making the greatest gains. A chapter is devoted to each of the following: Operation Market-Garden,First Army's repeated attempts at Aachen, the West Wall, Roer River / Hurtgen Forest campaigns, Patton's Lorraine. The landings of Seventh Army on southern France and its drive north is also covered but to a lesser extent. The book opens with a brief summary of the Cobra breakout and moves on to the Falaise Gap and the race to the Seine by the end of August. This sets the scene for the remainder of the narrative. The whole second chapter discusses the logistics of war and shows how a successful army is amply supplied.

Much time is spent on building personal profiles on Eisenhower and Montgomery but Smith and other Eisenhower's deputies, Bradley, Patton, Dempsey, Simonds are also discussed but to a lesser degree. Eisenhower's command style is shown; his desire to lead from the rear, allowing his deputies, especially Smith run the day to day stuff. Its also shown that Eisenhower was constantly concern of offending the British or charged with discrimination and would go out of his way to accomodate them. To me, this was Eisenhower's weakness and the British, especially Montgomery, took advantage of it. If Eisenhower had taken a stronger hand at Falaise, the Sheldt, refused the dangerous Operation Market-Garden, curtailed the British in SHAEF that were changing Eisenhower's orders for Montgomery's benefit, had not given priority to Monty so many times over Bradley and Patton the Allies would have crossed the Rhine much sooner. The author clearly shows the antics Montgomery pulled degraded the overall Allied effort. Montgomery is also shown as the embittered Field Marshall who wanted and thought deserved Ike's job and would follow his own agenda as much as possible.

There are also 20 maps which were very good. Most showing actual deployments and axes of attack while couple maps showed diffeneces in plans between US and British planners.
The author provides analysis of key events and their impact on the future running of the war. In some instances he provides alternative scenarios that could have been more successful. Securing Antwerp in the opening days of September and using the port sooner or not running Operation Market-Garden are two examples.
If you want a clear picture of the hardships facing the front line due to shortages and the inside story of the machinations of Eisenhower and Montgomery then this will be a must read.
Even if you've read D'Este, Blumenson, Weigley, Breuer and others, you should still seriously consider adding this book to your collection. There will be new information to be gained by most of us and its highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bottom Line Up Front - Really a 4-1/2 star review
I ordered this book sight unseen off the Amazon web site because I have not come across much in terms of thought provoking WW2 scholarship lately. It gets to be a real problem when one rides a commuter bus each day.Based on the strength of BG (Ret) David Zabecki's review comment and the fact that Indiana University Press has published some really good military history in the past, I bought it.After reading the entire book, I can say that it contains some of the most original and insightful analysis of the NW European Campaign that I have come across in the last decade. This is not a "What If" book that posulates alternative courses of action - the author picks apart the rationale and motivation of actual decisions made by Eisenhower, Bradley, and Montgomery to name a few.For example, he has succeeded in conveying the real reasons for the British 21st Army Group's otherwise inexplicable failure to clear the Schedlt Estuary in early September.Individual personality plays a large part in Adam's narrative and he conveys how the ambitions, likes, and dislikes of key generals had a direct influence on many events. The clear and concise explanation of the logistical factors that affected Allied operations in NW Europe during 1944 - 45 is indeed a welcome addition to the historiography of this campaign. The only reason that I could not give this book a five-star rating is because there are a few inadvertant factual errors when covering tactical level actions which the author "imported" into his account by relying uncritically onsecondary sources. However, these few mistakes are not of sufficient importance for me not to highly recommend this book. There is an enormous amount of "food for thought" amongst these pages for serious historians and readers interested in a fresh new look at well-covered ground. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Pride of the Union
This book is the second volume of a two volume biography of John Quincy Adams and it is the definative study of the subject.

The book takes up in the midst of his presidency.Beemis wisely assesses Adams's presidency as a low point in his career as an American statesman. The focus of the book is career as a congressman, his one foray into the world of popular politics and he performed magnificently.

While in congress the crucial issue was slavery.Adams, like his father, detested the institution. While not an abolitionist, Adams's concern was the effect that this "peculiar institution was having on the politics of the republic.

The justification of slavery seemed to occupy the focus of the southern delgations to Washington during this period. One of the innovations designed to halt discussion was the so-called "gag order" which prevented any petition addressing the subject of slavery to be automatically tabled. While not having the reputation as a popular politician, Adams realized what was at stake by this measure. To maintain slavery, fundamental rights were being sacrificed. To this son of the revolution this endangered all that had come before. If congress could limit the right of petition, it could limit other rights granted by the constitution, something that all branches of government were willing to accept.

Luckily for the future of the United States, Adams was a stubborn fighter who relished the conflict. This book charts his efforts to overturn this measure and to make the government accountable to its citizens.

During this period Adams also defended members of Amistead revolt, fought for the establishment of the Smithsonian Instition (congress had predictably squandered the original bequest), opposed the growth of slavery.Ironically Adams's reputation was more effective as a congressman than he ever was as president. He died in 1848 denouncing the Mexican War. He was carried from the chamber of the House of Representatives by his fellow congressmen, among them Abraham Lincoln, a moment of great symbollism.

Professor Beemis again demonstrates his mastery of his subject. While a distiguished scholar of American diplomatic history, he displays a great grasp of domestic affairs that his often lacking in those who are specialists in this subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than expected
I had very little knowledge of Ansel Adams other than having seen many of his images in books, prints, etc. The book describes in pictures and text how deeply emotionally and intellectually invested Ansel was in the photography process. He saw photography as a true art, and he felt a responsiblity to be true to the viewers of his images in terms of communicating exactly what he saw and FELT when he was capturing the image. His passion for black and white was remarkable. He did not believer that color could be reproduced and delivered to consumers, whether they be serious artists or casual observers, in a way that was up to his standards for quality. He did, however, anticipate that the future of photography would change that concern, and he knew that technology was moving away from film. It is a little sad that he didn't live to see the digital technologies of today - he would probably be a major digital expert. Nice job by the author putting this together. Ansel lives on the pages.

Product Description
For sixty years, Ansel Adams photographed among the great peaks of Yosemite National Park and the High Sierra range:the "range of light." Inspired by their grandeur, their wildness, and their primeval mystery, he made photographs that were to become the icons of America's national park ethic. His reverence for these places—the same reverence that fueled his commitment to environmental activism—illuminates each image. Yosemite Falls, the brooding majesty of Half Dome—we can no longer experience these "holy places" without seeing them through Ansel Adams' eyes.

During his lifetime Adams published seven books of images from this region; this new book bringstogether in a single volume the finest photographs from this vast body of work. Alive with anecdote and insight, his writings serve as backdrop for the images, and John Szarkowski's introduction provides testimony to the enduring impact of Adams' Yosemite vision. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb introductory John Quincy Admas juvenile biography
The Profiles of the Presidents series is a superb collection of introductory juvenile biographies for young students, which I think is around the halfway mark in terms of covering everyone from Washington to Bush the Younger.Ironically, it is because of the current resident of the White House that John Quincy Adams has received more attention in recent years. After all, the parallels are extraordinary: both men are the only sons of Presidents to be elected to the office, they both have the same first name but different middle names, and they both lost the popular vote in their first election. Will the parallel continue in 2004?Well, no: because while every other President who was elected with less of the popular vote lost their bid for re-election they both (John Quincy Adams and Benjamin Harrison) lost in rematches with the opponents who won the popular vote (Andrew Jackson and Grover Cleveland) and that is not going to happen this time because Al Gore did "Saturday Night Live" and disappeared into the sunset.

Michael Burgan begins this book by establishing the idea that the story of John Quincy Adams is that of "A Lifetime of Service."Where Adams is most unique is that there he continued to serve his country after his four difficult years in the White House, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives and becoming known as "Old Man Eloquent" for his attacks on slavery (touched on in Steven Spielberg's film "Amistad").Burgan deals with the problems of being the son of a President but also goes into detail on the extraordinary diplomat career both abroad and at home. The end result is the inevitable conclusion that even if he had not been elected President the life and political career of John Quincy Adams should be remembered.

In addition to the concise but detailed biography, this volume is profusely illustrated with historic etchings, paintings, and maps.Even when the illustrations are black & white they often end up with colored frames, showing the premium placed by the editors on having an eye-catching book.In the back of the book you will find a glossary, fast facts about Adams, a parallel timeline of world and presidential events, extensive resources to help young students better understand the life and times of this particular president, and a decent index. The Profiles of the Presidents series is excellent and Michael Burgan's look at "John Quincy Adams" is one of the best to date. ...
