4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource into the Mind of a Master
This is truly a fantastic resource for those who want to "step into" the mind of a master photographer. On a different note, it is also an interesting historical perspective from somebody who has lived through the technological changes in photography and several different "movements" in art.Beyond just providing you with basic "EXIF" or exposure information on his shots, Adams has provided insight into, among other things, what lead up to "seeing" the shot, how he considered technical aspects (especially as it related to his Zone System), how he felt about the scene and his surroundings, and what he did in the darkroom in order to bring out the best in the shot. You also get a very good sense of Adams' philosophy on photography and just life in general.

I learned several interesting things about Adams from this book that I did not know previously - he bracketed shots quite a bit (which made me feel better about not getting the shot perfect the first time, every time), he spent as much time in "post processing" as he did shooting (which made me reconsider how I use modern equivalents like Photoshop and Aperture), even though he bracketed quite often, he really felt you got your best "base" for the shot from the negative, and thus he was a proponent of pre-visualizing shots.

This book is very easy to read and the photographs are nicely reproduced so you can get a sense of what Adams is talking about. It is also subtly dense. While you can read it in a very leisurely manner, picking up points here and there, it is also worthy of serious study. As I have reread favorite sections for a second and third time, I have picked up on nuances in his words that have help me understand the photo better and how I may apply his wisdom to my own photography.

Finally, this book has prompted me to do my own "Making of..." series for 40 of my photographs and write about it on my blog.In that sense, this book has really spurred me to be detail-oriented with my shooting and helped me creatively. It is worth the modest price and has provided me with at least ten-fold in satisfaction.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating insight into the mind of a mater photographer
This is a fascinating of how Ansel Adams came to make 40 of his photographs. Some of them are well known ("Monolith, The Face of the half Dome", "Clearing Winter Storm", "Moonrise - Hernandez, New Mexico", "Clearing Winter Storm", "Mount McKinley and Wonder Lake") others less so (for example, the portraits and still life). The accounts of each photograph include anecdotes about how the photograph came to be made and technical information about the film, exposure, f-stop, development and printing processes, and a little about composition. Adams does not attempt to explain the meaning of any of the images: as he says, "only the print contains the artist's meaning and message". If you are looking for a "cookbook" of bullet points that will improve your photography, then you will probably be disappointed, especially since many of the technique issues are specific to black and white medium-format film photography. However if you have a deep appreciation of photographic art and the classic images that define it then you will enjoy this insight into the mind of one of the great practitioners and learn from him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go behind the scenes with a master
I found this book very revealing and compelling, not to mention inspiring. You get to go on a journey with a master of photography and learn about how he approached each of these 40 classic Images, as he discusses in detail what the day and shooting conditions were like, what equipment he used and why, how he framed the pictures and why, and lots of other interesting things that come to his mind. Whether or not you are a fan of Adams images, you will gain something from this book. Adams is a teacher, and his love of sharing his acquired knowledge with the reader comes through in this very enjoyable resource.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for digital.
I thought this book would be great, and I saw that it had rave reviews so I got it.I must say I was fairly disappointed. It's not the book's fault, so it almost seems unfair to give it a low rating. But such is life.

The major problem is that the book describes a process which is film-based rather than digital. Now I knew that going in, but I also figured that digital photography is very analogous to film-based photography, so there was still a lot I could learn.I was wrong.Adams spends a great deal of time discussing the camera he used (almost always large format), the lenses, the filters, the type of film, and the chemicals used in development.Almost all of this is entirely meaningless in a world of 35mm digital cameras.Only the filters have ANY relevance, and even that is extremely limited in a world of post-processing.So all of "the making" included in this book was entirely useless for me, and probably for most of you.

Still, there was value in his discussion of the situation leading up to the photography.Ironically, there was probably more of this than there should have been for a "making of" book! But thank goodness, because it was the only part of the book that was even meaningful to me.And it was not really enough.I struggled to finish the book in the hope that it would prove worthwhile, but I am not convinced that it did.I would not recommend this book.

On the other hand, if you are doing film photography, it may be exactly what you were looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking, insightful, mystical
If you are not inclined toward books that compel you to think about the spiritual mysteries of life, about the way we choose to make decisions, about our processes for determining what and who will influence us and how, don't bother. But if you want to read a book that is hauntingly lyrical, that compels you to think about your own spiritual and intellectual journeys, that drives you to consider the reasons that propel you to do what you do, then read this book.Marvelous parallel structure which moves unerringly, unflinchingly, inexorably to a conclusion that forces you to confront not only your own mortality, but the legacy you believe you are building, the people you believe you are influencing and effecting--and how and why you proceed through your life's journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impossible to give this a bad review
Reader from usa certainly got this wrong - not even a mention of Vienna or Israel.I guess this is the problem. This is a highly mystical book and will only be understood by those who have that inclination.Others will see it as confusing.I thought this was one of the great works of the last year and have made sure I have told everyone about it.It moved me for weeks after and to give this a bad review is just impossible.

1-0 out of 5 stars heavyhanded jung
This book attempts to marry jungian psychology, eastern religion and a bit of Christian mysticism and fails dismally. The plot is totally disjointed, jumping from pre-war Vienna to wartime Europe to India to Israel and back to India with very little connection in the plot. The characters are wooden and it is impossible to feel any empathy for any of them, even when they are being burned to death or being cruelly blinded. When I read bits out to my family they thought it was aspoof and laughed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and compelling.
This book grabs you. It isn't light reading, but you must read on. Thecharacters evoke emotion, you pity them, loath them, care about them andfeel sadness for them, but yet they stand alone, not needing this from youor anyone. The words pour from the pages, I found myself rereading passagesjust for the pleasure of the words. Most of the book takes place in India, and though I haven't been there, the sights, sounds and smells of it are sovivid that I got a feel for it, even the yellow haze of dust.Moses, themain character is a man who has no idea what destruction his actions causeand until later in the book. You wonder how this man can go through life sooblivious. However as his story and his Indian counterparts' story unfoldsyou are drawn into their actions and lives and it carries you along. Thisis not a "fluff" novel, it is deep, dark and yet has greatbeauty. For someone who loves to read...this book is wonderful. ... Read more

Product Description
Bill rock went to the burlesque show, on a hunch that he could gather a little information his boss, the District Attorney, needed in his fight on the vice ring. The fourth girl from the left was a likely looking one to Bill. He made a date to see her, though going backstage led to a row with Mullins, the manager. Bill had to knock him out, which was going to be the start of plenty of trouble for this "D. A.'s dick." So, when Bill went to the stripteaser's room and found her dead, he wanted a crack at solving the crime in his own way. The vice squad men arrived at the same time, however, took Bill away, booked him for the girl's murder. Written by Cleve F. Adams and Robert Leslie Bellem under the pen-name Franklin Charles. A Pulpville Press book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a lot tangible going for it, it just works somehow.
Cleve Adams was a respected writer of the hard-boiled school in the 40's, who has come under harsh criticism in recent years for a racist attitude and humorless, dull prose. I can't comment on those knocks, as this is his only work I've read. But I am a big fan of the prolific and famous (infamous?) Robert Leslie Bellem, he of the roscoes that spat ka-chow! And I had heard some good things about this collaboration of the two under the pseudonym of Franklin Charles, so was anxious to read it.

The Vice Czar Murders took a while to grab me, and I still can't say why exactly it did, but I enjoyed it. I postulate that the strengths of each writer worked well together. Bellem gave Adams a sense of humor, and Adams provided Bellem a more realistic toughness. Consequently, there is a snappiness to the banter between the principles that Adams likely could not have provided on his own, and more depth to the situations and people than is characteristic in Bellem's oeuvre.

However, the hero is still a larger-than-life figure, a muscular but smart guy named William Rock. Rock is about 32, graying a little, and is a special investigator for the DA's office, looking into the vice rackets in an unnamed town that felt like Nevada but was probably California. There's really nothing that separates Rock from any other hard-boiled type, but he is basically honest and likes a dame he plans to marry, if she could figure out her past. See, she doesn't know who her parents are and wonders about the half-million bucks in her bank account. The DA, seedy cops, a wealthy prostitute, Rock's whiny sister, her newshound husband and his unsympathetic Publisher all figure in. Rock-s investigation begins with the questioning of the least stupid-looking showgirl at a club. Then she winds up dead, and Rock is on the run for the rest of the novel, uncovering several more bodies and making a few more of his own. All the fuss is over a missing packet of names which tie together a couple of the characters in the rackets and in a 30-year-old secret. The mystery is not so much about murders, although there is that element; it took a while for even Rock to figure out what precipitated it all. So Rock's quest become simply about surviving long enough to figure out the long-ago pasts of a few of the characters. It's a short novel, and moves quickly. Maybe not believably all the time, but quickly.

Compare this to Hammet's Continental Op, and it's found wanting. Weigh it against other early entrants from the Black Mask school, such as Roger Torrey and Raoul Whitfield, and the comparison is more apt. Although the presence of (I assume) Bellem's wry dialogue could make me throw Nebel and Latimer into the pot for comparison's sake.

This is perhaps an example of a book being more than the sum of its parts- I can't break down exactly what I enjoyed about this book. I just did, that's all. But it's a pulpy trip down hard-boiled lane.

And maybe that's enough of a reason. ... Read more

Product Description
The 26th president of the United States was a strong and clever man who could handle almost everything-except his eldest child, Alice.

Alice Roosevelt was an independent, outspoken young woman during a time when women were supposed to be conventional and reserved. Whether it was riding a pig, keeping a pet snake, or driving a car-and speeding!-Alice did what she wanted to. When her father told she had to obey his rules while she lived under his roof, Alice decided to spend her time on top of the roof!

Readers will enjoy author Leslie Kimmelman's factual and affectionate look at a free spirit who caught the attention of a nation in the early years of the twentieth century. Kimmelman juxtaposes Alice's antics with the achievements of her father-from his creation of our national parks system to his successful efforts at diplomacy-yet all the while, demonstrates a tender bond between the two. Adam Gustavson's illustrations perfectly capture the humor of the story and the strong personalities of its characters while placing the story within its proper historical context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious read about a free spirit named Alice Roosevelt
Alice Roosevelt was the only child from President Teddy Roosevelt's first marriage (her mother died in childbirth). Though Pres. Roosevelt was renowned for his leadership and negotiation skills (winning the Novel Peace Prize for his mediation efforts between the Russians and Japanese), he had one primary weakness, i.e. his oldest daughter Alice. She gave him such a hard time through her daredevil stunts and scandal inducing acts (driving cars at high speed, riding a pig, keeping a pet bear and garter snake, etc.), that he was reputed to have said, "I can do one of two things." "I can be president of the United States or I can control Alice. I cannot possibly do both."

Alice Roosevelt was a strong-willed young woman determined to march to the beat of her own drum. When I read this with my 5-year-old daughter who is quite the free spirit herself, we both laughed out loud at some of Alice's antics. The story will appeal to any child who identifies with the adventurous and independent streak in Alice. The full-color illustrations are vivid and beautiful, capturing the vital force that was Alice Roosevelt, and contrasting this with the achievements of Pres. Teddy Roosevelt. Based on real-life events, this makes for an interesting and engaging read for children ages 4-8.

Product Description
FM* is an extraordinary document of artist and teacherLisa Adams' transformative approach to developing the contemporarypainter. Replete with high-quality reproductions of paintings anddrawings by Adams' students, now emerging Los Angeles artists, thisaccessible hook is one of the first to introduce meaningfulphilosophical and perceptual concepts in painting to painters of alllevels, allowing even the novice artist the opportunity to createdeeply personal, moving works of art by following theassignments. Readers will also note the lasting and inspiring rapportbetween a respected instructor and her students.

The art market is booming in Los Angeles and New York. Not since theearly eighties has interest in art and art-making been thissignificant. People of all walks of life are entering art schoolprograms in droves. In short, people want to know about and to makeart. FM* stands miles apart from all the "how-to" books on paintingand drawing that crowd the shelves in art stores and book stores asits thoughtful exercises allow the artist to bypass dreary technicalrepetitions to make wholly unique work by tapping into unchartedpsychological territory.

FM* is already available in Los Angeles museums and independentbookstores, including the Getty Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art(MOCA), UCLA at the Armand Hammer Museum and Culture Center, theMidnight Special Book Store, and Patricia Correia gallery at theBergamont Arts Complex in Santa Monica where Adams had her recentone-person show. ... In this day and age where what seems to make it in this worldis that and those people who conform to the do's and don'ts ofcorporate America, or perhaps I ought say america with a small"a", FM is a most refreshing change that renews my belief that there are still original thinkers out there making personal and important statements that are not only artistic, but personal, cultural, politically relevant, psychologically astute and desperately needed. It is hard to hold onto the hope that individuals can grow up in this world, develop and hold onto and feel good about an authentic sense of self - so kudo's to Lisa Adams for creating this book, and for those whos work appears. I am always impressed by the work of Lauren Hartman who seems to really have found a path to her authentic self - may she never lose that, and may this book inspire others to find theirs. ...
