Shaw's story is rife with such 'beyond opinions', as an Anglo-Irish Protestant, a Dubliner in London, and a socialist living in the aftermath of the industrial revolution. In one sense, as a Protestant choosing to live in London, he is a John Bull, yet he remains Irish - an Irish Bull, something alluded to in his one play set in Eire, "John Bull's Other Island". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ben Richardson's review
Do you like books about the Civil War, military tactics, or just the second Battle of Bull Run? Then this book is for you. This is a complete analysis of the second Battle of Bull Run. This battle has been overlooked by history and never been told so completely before this book.
The book starts out with Edward Pope filling the empty general's position for the army of North Virginia for the Union. He decides to move the army from the Potomic to confront Lee, the comander of the army of Virginia, for the South. Lee decides to send his top general, Stonewall Jackson, on a flanking manuver around the Union lines to attack the Union from the rear. When Jackson and his 25,000 men make their way around, they take supply depots and set up defensive positions at the Union rear. Lee then sent another general, Longstreet and 12,000 men to follow behind Jackson. Pope was convinced he needed to attack Jackson and sent his troops to attack. The next day Pope sends the bulk of his army to attack Jackson. Jackson held his ground and repelled Pope. The next day Longstreet met up with Jackson. They combined their forces and mounted a counterattck agianst Pope and forced his army to retreat.
If you like books that are about the Civil War, read this book. It is a comprhensive guide of the second Battle of Manassas, in depth, and included maps. It not a very easy read. The book contains 600 pages and has medium sized font. This book is what I consider to be more of a guy book because it deals with war, killing, and military tactics.
This book is a great account of a underappreciated Civil War battle. If the Union had won, the war could have been over much earlier and lives wouldn't have had to be wasted. If you are an avid Civil War buff or have just begun to have an interest in the Civil War, this book is for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Responsibility
At first glance, John Hennessy provides an excellent account of the Second Bull Run campaign. He draws on copious primary and secondary sources and crafts a very readable narrative, often clarifying what can be a very confusing campaign to follow. While not absolving the Lincoln administration, Henry Halleck and George McClellan for the Union fiasco, Hennessy believes the chief responsibility for the failed campaign rests on John Pope.

But there is one huge problem here. Hennessy ignores almost everything John Pope wrote about the campaign. This is very odd. Hennessy looked at an impressive number of primary sources. He looked at a number of articles from the "National Tribune." Oddly enough he never looked at any of Pope's articles from the Tribune. While Pope often refered to the OR, he did offer some insight on his motives and decisions. This undermines a great deal of Hennessy's book. For example, Pope wrote a great deal about Banks attacking Jackson at Cedar Mountain and what the exact orders were. Hennessy blithely ignores this and much other material.

Since Hennessy goes out of his way to trash Pope, this is a major factor in evaluating the book. Pope may well have been a scoundrel full of bravado. He may well have been an incompetent commander. But Pope, like all other commanders, deserves to have his say. The fact that Hennessy feels compelled to ignore Pope's records is disturbing to say the least.
Can you write an account of the Overland campaign without consulting the assorted writings and musings of Grant or Lee? Of course not and the fact that Hennessy chose to ignore the writings of the chief Union commander of the Second Manassas campaign is appalling and frankly undermines the credability of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy Effort of a Great Campaign
Rarely in the past few years has a campaign study been published that has been as good as John Hennessy's "Return to Bull Run: The Campaign and Battle of Second Manassas." Expertly researched and well written the author knows his subject, and draws the reader in with the first page. This was one of the most interesting campaigns in the eastern theater. High drama prevailed from the very start. Jackson's performance is well documented and Hennessy does a very good job of describing his effort and those of his men as they marched around Pope's flank. Freeman's Ford, the attack on Mannassas Junction, Brawner's Farm, the railroad cut, the annihilation of the 5th New York, it's all here and extemely well done. A very fine book in every way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I was impressed by this book's flowing description. One time I sat down to read a bit, and next thing I knew, three hours had passed!
I would highly reccomend this to anyone interested in the Second Manassas campaign.
On a downside, the maps, though common, are hard to read in places, and it is hard to tell the woods from the open land....

5-0 out of 5 stars Cant imagine a better rendition of this campaign
This is the quality of book that will make anyone wishing to write a book on this campaign/battle drop the idea.
Hennessy has blended the facts, personal accounts, maps, and analysis splendidly....one is never over served in any area.
Being detailed work, regimental positioning (something I enjoy)is here for the taking. The maps are of a quality that in conjunction with the regimental movement information, this book could serve as a guide for a battlefield visit.Having read this book after reading Kricks "Stonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain", I am thankful that we can draw on the workmanship of such fine students of the WBTS.
This battle sets up the Antietam Campaign and this book should be read previous to that study. The North doesnt want to talk much about this battle, understandably, and perhaps this is why it hasnt received much attention. Lee makes his largest charge of the war (Longstreet on 8/30/62) which reveals the magnitude of this battle. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating satire
When Lord Strutt suddenly dies, a falsified will makes Philip Baboon the new Lord Strutt. Backing the rival claims of Esquire South, John Bull and Nicholas Frog begin court action against Lewis Baboon, the father of Philip Baboon. Though Humphrey Hocus, a brilliant attorney, wins case after case, the court action drags on interminably. As the court action drags on, Hocus assures Bull that Lewis Baboon is nearly finished and the next case must surely finish him. And worse, having been brought to the edge of bankruptcy, Bull discovers that Frog, et al, are ensuring that Bull pays far more than his fair share. Finally, when Bull decides to put an end to it, he discovers the depth of his fellows' dishonesty.

Now, swap Charles II of Spain for the late Lord Strutt, Philip of Anjou for Philip Baboon, Charles of Austria for Esquire South, the English people for John Bull, the Dutch people for Nicholas Frog, Louis XIV for Lewis Baboon, the Duke of Marlborough for Humphrey Hocus, war for court action, battles for cases, general for attorney [pant, pant, pant], and you have the War of the Spanish Succession! (At least as seen through Tory eyes.)

This series of five pamphlets were published in 1712 as an allegory of the War of the Spanish Succession. They have biting satire in them (Marlborough, and quite a few others are roasted quite thoroughly), and make an enjoyable read. I must state, though, that unlike some satires, these pamphlets will not prove terribly entertaining if you get an edition that does not include a good background, footnotes, and a cast of characters (i.e., it is a so-so story on its own, but a wonderful satire).

It is not necessary to know much about the War, so long as you are interested in the subject, and are willing to periodically flip back to the notes (as was the case with me). I would say that this book is an interesting historical artifact, and an excellent piece of literature. By the way, these pamphlets are the source of the character John Bull. ... Read more

Product Description
The story of a steam-powered wonder

The John Bull -- now on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution -- was imported from England in 1831, and its cutting-edge design had a huge impact on American locomotive history. Used to help build and then run the first successful New Jersey railroad, the John Bull transported passengers and freight between New York City and Philadelphia more quickly and efficiently than ever before. And within a few years, more than a dozen locomotives were constructed following the John Bull's design, helping to spawn a vigorous and vital new American industry.

With detailed text and exacting pen-and-ink artwork -- including here's-how-it-works diagrams -- David Weitzman re-creates the John Bull's colorful history for young train buffs.

5-0 out of 5 stars REMARKABLY DETAILED
The remarkably detailed, stunning black and white drawings by author/illustrator David Weitzman are worth a great deal more than the price of this book.Front endpapers and back endpapers offer a comprehensive picture of this early locomotive with accompanyingnumbers identifying each feature. There's the wood filled fire box, the crank, and even the driving axle. All with an interest in trains will consider this slim volume a treasure.

As some know, John Bull was built in England and transported by steamship to America in 1831.Such a powerhouse had never been seen before, and it was used not only to help build but to run the first New Jersey railroad.

This met with such success that America soon manufactured many more similar locomotives.

After a lengthy tour of service the locomotive was retired to the Smithsonian Institution where it was admired by thousands.Even more amazing is that some 150 years after it first arrived on our shores the John Bull was still able to run as smoothly as ever.

"The John Bull" is fitting tribute to a vital portion of our transportation industry.

Product Description

Ever since his astonishing victory in the 1991 PGA Championship, John Daly, known affectionately on the PGA Tour as "Big 'Un," has enthralled fans with his big drives, bigger personality, and "Grip It and Rip It" approach to golf -- and to life.

Long John, usually seen with a Marlboro Light dangling from his lip, is the unchained, unpredictable, unapologetic bad boy of professional golf. "The only rules I follow," JD likes to say, "are the Rules of Golf."

Daly's play-it-as-it-lays approach drives My Life in and out of the Rough, a thrillingly -- and sometimes shockingly -- candid memoir of a larger-than-life athlete battling assorted addictions (alcohol, gambling, chocolate, sex), his weight, and, perhaps worst of all, divorce lawyers. (He's been married four times.)

A two-time major winner before he turned thirty, John Daly is one of the most popular athletes in the world. Taking readers with him off the fairway and into his $1.5-million motor home for a rollicking ride through his life -- an ever-churning world of booze, burgers, casinos, country music, and breathtaking moonshots -- Daly reveals how a down-home Everyman from Arkansas managed to rise to the peak of the golf world, escape from the depths of abject depression, and, finally, take control of his life.

Well, sort of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!
very enjoyable! hard to put down once you start reading. Very exciting no b.s. story of John.I would love to meet John just to say congratulations on a job well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars An inside view
I've read the book and afterward the reviews here...first, the book is an inside view to the circumstances Daly has found himself in and the choices he has made as a result. He has described them to us as he saw/sees them.I am grateful for the opportunity to see someone elses perspective. Those are not my perspectives/circumstances/choices and not likely to become so.Interesting reading, nonetheless.

Second, what surprised me was the level of judgment and preaching about and to Daly in some of the reviews. The guy tells us he is simply telling it like he sees it and not pulling any punches...it literally is what it is.There are those of us who tend toward the edges and will do so regardless of anyone else's desires or wishes, while most of us tend to hang around the middle.Daly lives his life on the edge and he has explained why.He hasn't asked for approval, he is simply showing us the view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing short of Incredible!
A wonderful glance into the remarkable and troubled life of an amazing golfer and a truly incredible man!

John has always been my favorite golfer. I picked this book up due to a recommendation by a friend. I found that once I started reading I could not put the book down until it was finished.

This book goes into the shortcomings and triumphs of the most diverse golfer that the game has ever seen. Some people love to hate John, and others would love to hang out with him. John shows that golfing is all about fun, it is a game and should be treated as such.

It is fun to read about how John got his start in golf, the wins he has had over the years, and the charity he has shown others. There are also sad aspects of the book which go into the drinking, gambling and love life of a man who seems to searching for something that he will never find.

I highly recommend this book to any sports enthusiast. It is a great read and will have you rolling on the floor at some of the hilarious anecdotes. Don't let this one go unread as you will regret it. John surly is an amazing guy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Daly's confessions
This is a sad autobiography from a man who could have excelled at a sport but failed to. He is admittedly self-destructive and the story is not all that fascinating. I'm glad I bought a used copy for very little.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Anthology - A Blend of Poetry and History
In its common form pastoral poetry describes an idyllic rural world that serves as a basis for comparison with a more distressed and degraded urban society. Sometimes this criticism of existing society is subtle, muted, and disguised. The pastoral form originated with the ancient Greeks (Virgil's Eclogues), was revived in Renaissance Italy (Petrarch and Mantuan), and subsequently made popular in England by Edmund Spenser's Shepheardes Calendar (1579).

John Barrell and John Bull, in jointly creating this anthology (A Book of English Pastoral Verse), used a broad interpretation to include formal eclogues, poems, pastoral drama, agricultural poems (patterned after Virgil's Georgics), and even satirical poems critical of the pastoral style. The verse is arranged chronologically into eight sections, and each group is introduced by intriguing commentary on how pastoral poetry continued to evolve in response to changing social, political, and economic conditions in England. This historical commentary adds substantial value to this rather unique anthology.

We read Spenser, Sidney, Donne, Jonson, Herrick, Milton, Marvell, Pope, Gray, Cowper, Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley, and Arnold, as well as lesser-known poets.

John Barrell and John Bull modernized the punctuation a bit, but they only changed archaic spellings where they judged it absolutely necessary. As explanatory notes were rare, I was initially uncomfortable, but I soon learned to rely on the sound and rhythm of the verse to carry me through any difficult lines. In retrospect I am sure that I more quickly gained an appreciation for pastoral verse than if I had been halting frequently to read footnotes.

My 1975 hardback edition (titled A Book of English Pastoral Verse) from Oxford University Press is not easy to find. However, this anthology is also available in a 1982 paperback titled Penquin Book of English Pastoral Verse (or, alternatively as English Pastoral Verse). There is an interesting article in the periodical Jacket 12, July 2000 in which David Kennedy writes that the pastoral is alive and well today among contemporary poets despite the contention by John Barrell and John Bull that the pastoral is an outdated verse form.

I highly recommend this work, especially to anyone interested in exploring how changes in English poetry reflects changes in English society itself. ... Read more

Product Description
Joachim Schmid began his career as a critic, arguing passionately against prevailing notions of "art photography" and in favor of a broad, encompassing view of the medium as a form of cultural practice. In the late 80s, he shifted his focus to making those arguments in his own art, which is based primarily on found photography. At the time, Schmid lived near one of the largest flea markets in Berlin, and his broad collection of vernacular photography formed the raw material for many of the works included here. His oeuvre reflects a close observation of photographic history and a fascination with the images themselves, in all their bizarre and conventionalized aspects, but its fundamental richness--along with the sardonic wit he so often displays--derails any attempt to read it as academic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a technical review for Kindle books the iPad
I first downloaded a sample of this book because I wanted to see how good or bad the plates were on an iPad.Unfortunately the color plates weren't in the sample, so I opted to spend $9.59 to find out what they'd look like on the iPad.

The plates are FANTASTIC! As clear and crisp as a printed birding book. The reader can also expand the plates to get a detailed look at the birds, although at a certain point, the illustration cannot get any larger without losing clarity. The expanded size does allow the reader to focus on specific, but tiny details, such as the presence or absence of a white line above the bird's eye and whether the wings fold over each other or simply meet on the birds back.

For those who use Amazon frequently, but don't have a Kindle, there is a free Kindle App for the iPhone and iPad.Once downloaded, the user can shop for Kindle books via the App. Amazon will send the book out via Whispernet immediately. Users can also browse and buy Kindle ebooks on the PC (having a larger screen is helpful when you want to browse or compare similar books). Once purchased you can download the book the next time the iPad connects to your PC with the USB cable.(This also works if you are out of Whispernet's range.)

I thought the iPad would be the "Kindle killer" because iBooks is tied to the Barnes & Noble eBook site.Amazon clearly figured out "if you can't beat them, join them."Both sites are worth checking because books at either site are not always the same price.

Using iPad for Kindle books means that there are 2 readers on the iPad - one for Barnes & Noble, the other for Kindle - but that is very easily manageable.

As for the book, it is designed for novice bird watchers.Experienced birders can field identify and differentiate between the similar looking species of birds identified in the book. But even for seasoned bird watchers, the section on how to distinguish the Northern Waterthrush from an Ovenbird from a Hermit Thrush and a Woodthrush is very helpful given the difference in markings is very subtle. This is also where the ability to magnify the plates comes in handy.

In sum, good book for beginners, and great demonstration of how great the iPad is as an eReader.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's been as close to perfect so far.
I bought this book for my girlfriend who wanted a good bird book. It's been phenomenal.

The picture comparison of the birds are excellent and detailed, as well as the descriptions being brief, informative, and to the point.Easy to identify birds in a moment after a brief glimpse of the actual birds.

I highly recommend this book, and this is from someone who didn't really know much about birds at all from a technical stand point."Blue" or "brown, mostly" is good enough to find what you are looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Buy!
I ordered this book as a gift for my mom and she loves it! I looked through it before sending it to her. The cover is indestructible, the pages don't stick together, the illustrations are fantastic. I think this would also be a great book for children who are interested in birds. It's very informative and easy to read. There's even a section in the book that shows you what the bird looks like flying in the distance (so you can tell by the way they hold their wings whether they're an Eagle or a Vulture.) Great book. Thank you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use.
This bird guide is very well arranged, grouping everything from songbirds to gamebirds to raptors (hawks, etc.) according to primary color and habitat. Also provides numerous extras to aid in identifying bird types as well as individual species. The illustrations are top quality. While not comprehensive, the book covers all the birds you're likely to see in your backyard, nearby woods, ponds and streams, and makes it easy to look them up. Recommended, especially for beginners.

The book describes these events and explores the social world of the seamen, offering explanations for their actions.Focusing on the culture, politics, and experiences of early American seamen, this legendary study played an important role in the development of histories of the common people and has inspired generations of social and early American historians.Lemisch's later related article, "Jack Tar in the Streets," was named one of the ten most important articles ever published in the prestigious William and Mary Quarterly. Product Description
Great George Street, Westminster, is the address of Doyle and Broadbent, civil engineers. On the threshold one reads that the firm consists of Mr Lawrence Doyle and Mr Thomas Broadbent, and that their rooms are on the first floor. Most of their rooms are private; for the partners, being bachelors and bosom friends, live there; and the door marked Private, next the clerks' office, is their domestic sitting room as well as their reception room for clients. Let me describe it briefly from the point of view of a sparrow on the window sill. The outer door is in the opposite wall, close to the right hand corner. Between this door and the left hand corner is a hatstand and a table consisting of large drawing boards on trestles, with plans, rolls of tracing paper, mathematical instruments and other draughts-man's accessories on it. In the left hand wall is the fireplace, and the door of an inner room between the fireplace and our observant sparrow. Against the right hand wall is a filing cabinet, with a cupboard on it, and, nearer, a tall office desk and stool for one person. In the middle of the room a large double writing table is set across, with a chair at each end for the two partners. It is a room which no woman would tolerate, smelling of tobacco, and much in need of repapering, repainting, and recarpeting; but this it the effect of bachelor untidiness and indifference, not want of means; for nothing that Doyle and Broadbent themselves have purchased is cheap; nor is anything they want lacking. On the walls hang a large map of South America, a pictorial advertisement of a steam-ship company, an impressive portrait of Gladstone, and several caricatures of Mr Balfour as a rabbit and Mr Chamberlain as a fox by Francis Carruthers Gould. ...
