Read more

Chapters: César Cui, Vladimir Shukhov, Abram Petrovich Gannibal, Eduard Totleben, Georg Wilhelm de Gennin, Matus Bisnovat, Ivan Grave, Vladimir Simonov, Mikhail Vorobyev. Excerpt:Gannibal speaking with Alexander Suvorov . Major-General Abram Petrovich Gannibal , also Hannibal or Ganibal or Ibrahim Hannibal or Abram Petrov , (1696 14 May 1781) was brought to Russia as a gift for Peter the Great and became major-general , military engineer and governor of Reval . He is perhaps best known today as the great-grandfather of Alexander Pushkin , who wrote an unfinished novel about him, Peter the Great's Negro . Early life His origins are uncertain. Early writings about Gannibal suggest he was born in 1696 in a village called "Lagon," in present day Eritrea, located "on the northern side of the Mareb River ..." (which serves as much of the modern border between Ethiopia and Eritrea). On an 1810 map of Henry Salt Logo appears (the area corresponds to today's region Loggo Sarda, which had its own rulers, and which is inhabited by Christian Tigrinnya and Muslim Saho; others claim it to correspond to nearby Loggo Chewa further west in Eritrea) As the other sons were brought to their father with their hands trussed up with a rope, he enjoyed freedom of the youngest son swimming in his father's fountains" (Pushkin's notes to Eugene Onegin ). The research (1996) of Dieudonné Gnammankou suggests he may actually have been from what is now the Sultanate of Logone-Birni on the Logone River , in Cameroon , south of Lake Chad . In an official document that Gannibal submitted in 1742 to Empress Elizabeth , while petitioning for the rank of nobility and a coat of arms , he asked for the right to use a family crest emblazoned with an elephant and the mysterious word "FVMMO" (means homeland in Kotoko ). However... ... Read more

Pëtr Il'ich Chaikovskiy IPA: ); often Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky in English; May 7, 1840 November 6, 1893 ) was a Russian composer of the Romantic era. His wide ranging output includes symphonies, operas, ballets, instrumental and chamber music and songs. He wrote some of the most popular concert and theatrical music in the classical repertoire, including the ballets Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker, the 1812 Overture, his First Piano Concerto, his last three numbered symphonies, and the opera Eugene Onegin. Born into a middle-class family, Tchaikovsky was educated for a career as a civil servant, despite his obvious musical precocity. He pursued a musical career against the wishes of his family, entering the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1862 and graduating in 1865. This formal, Western-oriented training set him apart from the contemporary nationalistic movement embodied by the influential group of young Russian composers known as The Five, with whom Tchaikovsky's professional relationship was mixed. Although he enjoyed many popular successes, Tchaikovsky was never emotionally secure, and his life was punctuated by personal crises and periods of depression. Contributory factors were his suppressed homosexuality and fear of exposure, his disastrous marriage, and the sudden c...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24503 ... Read more

Excerpt:Operas by César Cui Angelo ( in Cyrillic ; And elo in transliteration) is an opera in four acts by César Cui , composed during 1871-1875, with a libretto by Viktor Burenin based on Victor Hugo 's prose play, Angelo, tyran de Padoue . This same play formed the basis of Saverio Mercadante 's Il giuramento of 1837, Amilcare Ponchielli 's La Gioconda , which premiered in the same year as Cui's opera (1876), and Alfred Bruneau 's Angelo, tyran de Padoue of 1928. Performance history Angelo was premiered on 1 February 1876 in Saint Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theatre . The conductor was Eduard Nápravník . Apparently it did not survive that particular season, and was removed from the repertory. A new production of Angelo was staged twenty-five years after the original premiere in 1901 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, with Feodor Chaliapin in the role of Galeofa. The Mariinsky staged Angelo again in 1910. Roles Setting: Padua , 1549. Synopsis Act 1 In Tisbe's illuminated garden, masked guests entertain themselves. After they disperse, Rodolfo and the conspirators in the grotto complain about Angelo. The guests come back. Galeofa knows who Rodolfo is, and will help him to meet Catarina, his paramour, that night. Tisbe enters. She is in love with Rodolfo, and would kill any rival for his love. In an aside, he admits to loving only Catarina, and leaves. Galeofa reappears, and gives Tisbe a bottle of poison and a bottle of sleeping potion. He tells her that Rodolfo will be meeting another woman that... ... Read more

Excerpt: This is an alphabetical list of the basso profondo, bass, bass-baritone and tenor soloists who have performed with the Alexandrov Ensemble (under its various titles) since its establishment in 1928. It is difficult to differentiate between regular and guest soloists, since many have alternated between the one category and the other during their careers, so they are all listed together. Soloists of whom no recordings have yet been found have been listed below as "other soloists". Until April 2009, when this article was created, little or nothing was generally known outside Russia about these fine soloists: as a group, or (in most cases) as individuals. People in the West could read a few of their names on current Alexandrov Ensemble CDs and DVDs, and ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22469941 ... Read more
