4-0 out of 5 stars NOT JUST THE TITANIC
While the Titanic story has been covered extensively from every angle, much less is known about other White Star ships. But the line suffered several accidents over the years. This book tells us about the wrecks of the Atlantic, Britanic and Republic, among others.I especially enjoyed the chapters on the Olympic and Atlantic. The Olympic was the Titanic's sister ship, enjoying a fascinating history of her own.The Atlantic sank in 1873 with the loss of several hundred lives.Only true Titanic and sea buffs will want to read this book, though.Others will quickly find it boring and are advised to stick with materials entirely on Titanic. ... If you're in search of career or managerial excellence in 72 short 'n' sweet pages or less, you'll love this visually snappy, pintsize guide to doing just that, from setting goals to developing the determination, energy, and skills required to achieve them. Here, you'll learn not only how to network effectively and make the most of your time, but how to master practical techniques for improving your memory, sharpening your mental agility, thinking creatively, and reducing stress. Lots of fun checklists and flow charts help you get a grip on such key building blocks to excellence as guided risk-taking, staying in top physical and mental shape, writing and speaking more fluently, prioritizing, and influencing others. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits andsidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so damned cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give as gifts to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Managers: Achieving Excellence
It's a good book, a concentration of good tips how to manage the career developing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic Ambitions
Since excellence in today's highly competitive workplace demands more than knowledge of your field, people skills are essential.

If you want to develop your management skills and achieve your objectives, take a peek at this tiny resource book. While it isn't an all encompassing management book like the Essential Manager's Manual, it is easy to read and you can deal with one specific issue at a time. There are many books in the Essential Managers Series.

Robert Heller will show you how to build key attributes, develop confidence, master risk taking, lead effectively, stay in shape, increase learning, think more effectively, write and speak more fluently, boost your creativity, choose priorities, understand money, reduce stress, reassess your goals, find a mentor, take the lead and plan ahead.

I especially enjoyed the little hints placed in yellow boxes throughout the book. Here are some of my favorites:

Hint 97: Avoid changing your opinions to match those of the majority. Hint 42: Do not confuse wild, far-out, impractical ideas with creativity.

So, how will you know if you have achieved success in a particular area of your personal management qualities portfolio? Page 66-69 is a self-assessment which you can take to evaluate your achievement. As you work towards excellence, realize this is a lifelong challenge.

Product Description
Including all the tools a programmer needs to control MIDI devices, play sound, show movies, and control input devices, this volume explains how to create programs that communicate through e-mail, modems, and PBX systems. Examples and explanations, along with a CD of sample code, cover five major areas of programming--ODBC2, MAPI, TAPI, and multimedia and communication APIs.Amazon.com Review
Multimedia & ODBC API Bible explores four generallyunrelated topics in its pages: ODBC (Open Database Connectivity), theTelephony API (application programming interface), Common MessagingCalls (CMC), and multimedia API. Each API element gets a one- tothree-page explanation of its arguments, return values and syntax;some elements also get illustrative source code and comments.

TheODBC section details the ODBC 2.5 API, which is only one step behindthe current ODBC 3.0 release. Individual chapters contain the callsthat have to do with certain types of database procedures, such asconnecting to a data source and working with result sets. TheTelephony API portion of this book does much the same thing, splittingthe telephony function into line devices and phone devices, thendescribing API elements in each piece. The Common Messaging Calls, apart of MAPI (messaging application programming interface), are fullydocumented. Multimedia API documentation gets broken down byfunctional area, with chapters on MIDI, Media Control Interface (MCI),AVI (Audio Video Interleaved) file I/O, joysticks, and otherelements. Of the four topics covered in this book, multimedia gets themost thorough coverage, with the best source code and the clearestprose.

Multimedia & ODBC API Bible takes on too much andonly does a good job with some of its chosen material. If you'relooking for decent multimedia API documentation, this book has goodinformation on Telephony API, which isn't commonplace; however, youshould consider supplementing the rest of the sections with otherresources. ... This book, is the best result of the masterminds of the state of art, andI Suggest as a read for everyone that work with this technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's great in any language!
I do not read Japanese but the only available edition of this book when I needed it was the Japanese edition.I still found the book to give me all the information I needed to do what I needed to do, write an audiorecording app without knowing anything about Multi-Media beforehand.Ialso liked that it used mostly lower level coding so that it would not beso at risk from Microsofts whims.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simon gets it right again!!
I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed by any Robert Simonbook and this is no exception.Rather than read this book from cover tocover I use it as a reference. It is a fairly complete guide to multimediaand ODBC API calls and it is presented in a way that anyone can understand. Good job Mr. Simon!! ... Read more

Product Description
John Eaton, well known for his Psalms commentary, here offers a new model of commentary-writing. The psalms treated are those exalting God's Torah (Psalms 1, 19, 119) and those proclaiming his kingship (93, 97, 99). A detailed examination is made of the treatment of these psalms by selected exegetes from Delitzsch to the present. General conclusions are then drawn for such questions as dating, text, unity, meaning, piety, theology, and relation to prophecy. Both groups of psalms are found to contain great riches of religious insight and experience, which exegetes have rarely come within range of appreciating. Several important interpreters are only superficially known outside their own language group; the present study seeks to remedy this. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars ms.dean english project review
I thought this book was okay. It had a lot of great information in it and some was useless. I like how it showed every detail about the titanic. When they finished the first chapter I thought that the rest of the book was all background information about the ship. When they wrote about the boarding of the rescue boats it showed that they were not prepared for a crash but I thought was interesting. When they wrote about loading the boats with supplies it showed that they have to take a lot of recourses on their trip. I don't think the position of every boat was needed. The chapter on the captain growing up was also not needed in this book. I think that after the first chapter it got a little less interesting when they told you how they got the bodies it was helpful because it showed you that it was worse than most people thought. I think that all the people who sued the ship and for how much was a cool part of the story. It showed that it was an expensive crash not only to the owner but to the people. Over all this book was okay I think that a lot of it was filler but also a lot of it was good information.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST SHORT TITANIC BOOK
This is probably my favorite short book on the Titanic. It may not have all the material available elsewhere, but for a pretty quick read, it is about as good as they come. Those who like to curl up and read history books should have a great time here.

Authors Eaton and Haas have written several Titanic books, and in most they have skipped over the sinking itself and concentrated on other aspects of the disaster. Here the sinking is the focus. The 1912 disaster unfolds for the reader.A wonderful set of illustrations complements the text as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.
I have studied TITANIC most of life and before the movie, TITANIC, It was hard to find TITANIC books. This one and Don Lynch's TITANIC AN ILLUSTRATED history were thebest out. This is like a dictonary. It has the mostinformaition of all TITANIC books. I would recomend this book to anyone. Itis a great book for the begginer for its info and great price. BUY THISBOOK!

If most coaching guides look as if you'd need a coach just to get through them, you'll love this itty-bitty guide, which zooms in on the most important aspects of organizational-workplace coaching, from selecting an effective personal coaching style and preparing and shaping a coaching session to followup steps, dealing with barriers to coaching, troubleshooting, and more advanced coaching, such as team coaching, long-distance coaching, coaching plus appraising, and assessing your own coaching skills. On every page, boxed "power tips," quickie case studiesand self-tests, to-do checklists, and easy-to-follow flowcharts demystify the process. 5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Read Great Overview
I was impressed with the succinct nature of the coaching successfully book. Anyone wanting a how to book, there are others out the for you. Try the Sherpa Guide. This one however is perfect for coaching students and would be clients who want a real world taste of what it feels like to be on both sides of the coaching desk. I found it very helpful and a palatible read. Some may be turned off by how short it is, but I found the authors left nothing unsaid on the subject and gave a great overview of the coaching experience. The Power of Inner Guidance: Seven Steps to Tune In and Turn On

If you want to learn all you need to know about helping people to achieve their full potential, then you will enjoy Coaching Successfully. This book will show you how to motivate others, promote initiative and help others to take responsibility.

Your coaching style will need to be adapted when dealing with a group and you will also enjoy reading about how to overcome negativity. There are power tips throughout the book which help you to handle real-life situations and increase your effectiveness.

In today's business environment, e-mail can also be used for coaching, however they advise you not to use it for "personal" coaching. At the end of the book, you can evaluate your own coaching skills.

"Raise your expectations and ask people to live up to them." -pg. 62 "Allow people to learn from their own mistakes." -pg. 63 "Motivate staff by linking their personal goals to the company's aims." -pg. 20

These power tips are very useful and there are so many great ideas contained in this mini book. It won't take a long time to read, but you will be able to be a more positive influence on others and will know how to bring out the best in those you work with.

Product Description

This complete translation of the original collection of sermons, dialogues, and anecdotes of Huang Po, the illustrious Chinese master of the Tang Dynasty, allows the Western reader to gain an understanding of Zen from the original source, one of the key works in its teachings; it also offers deep and often startling insights into the rich treasures of Eastern thought. Nowhere is the use of paradox in Zen illustrated better than in the teaching of Huang Po, who shows how the experience of intuitive knowledge that reveals to a man what he is cannot be communicated by words. With the help of these paradoxes, beautifully and simply presented in this collection, Huang Po could set his disciples on the right path. It is in this fashion that the Zen master leads his listener into truth, often by a single phrase designed to destroy his particular demon of ignorance.

This book was first given to me by a friend and it has become one of my most treasured books on eastern philosphy. I have since purchased more copies to give as a gift to friends who are interested in philosophy.
This book is a series of dialogues, so in its favour, it can be picked up and put down at any time and therefore it is not necessarily required to read this book front to back. Treasure a dialogue savour it then put the book down until you want to be inspired again.
This book is a must have for those who are into eastern philosophy and meditation.
Firmly recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the point
For the age of this book, it really is written in a very modern toned manner.Huang Po didn't mess around with his words and he knew how to make sure the student knew exactly what he was pointing towards. There is definately no way any reader of this book will mistake the finger that points for the moon itself. This has got to rate as being one of the clearest books on enlightenment I have ever read.Another book which is very similar in theme is The Awakening of Spiritual Awareness, and both go well really together. They both state that the conceptual thinking mind is all that stands in the way of enlightenment here and now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Zen Distilled To Its Essence
[This review is for John Blofeld's "The Zen Teaching of Huang-Po: On the Transmission of Mind".]

I'm certain that you've read some of the other reviews and so understand what this book is about -- I'll try not to repeat their words.

John Blofeld was one of the earliest English-language translators of classic Zen texts.Back in 1958, there were very, very few Zen texts available to the Western world. This one became a classic.

Here are some of the main points of Huang Po's teachings:

He is ceaseless is asserting One-ness, and that duality is the root of delusion.

There is one mind, outside of time and space, ever-present.

Sudden enlightenment is the way it is.There is no advancement in stages.Enlightenment comes suddenly when the mind has been purged of the clutter of conceptual and discriminatory thought.

Seeking enlightenment is useless, but still, enlightenment takes effort.

Cling to nothing.Let each thought go as if were nothing, or make whatever slight response is suited to each occasion.

When mind thinks, we are in duality.Thinking is responsible for our errors.

There is nothing to teach.Study is useless. You can't learn it from others.

No merit can be accrued, so piousness is useless to arrive at enlightenment.

Keep the mind motionless.Let the world simply flow.

Zazen itself *is* liberation.

Could he be any clearer?

Every Zen library should own a copy -- highly recommended!
