Product Description
Bismarck once said that God looked after drunkards, children and the U.S. of A. Some say that baseball should be added to the list. It must have been divine intervention that led the sport through a series of transformative challenges from the end of World War II to the game's first expansion in 1961. During this period baseball was forced to make a number of painful choices. From 1949 to 1954, attendance dropped more than 30 percent, as once loyal fans turned to other activities, started going to see more football, and began watching television. Also, the sport had to wrestle with racial integration, franchise shifts and unionization while trying to keep a firm hold on the minds and emotions of the public. This work chronicles how baseball, with imagination and some foresight, survived postwar challenges. Some of the solutions came about intelligently, some clumsily, but by 1960 baseball was a stronger, healthier and better balanced institution than ever before. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Reliving Baseball's Recent Past
Rossi obviously has a passion for baseball, and he does an excellent job of describing each season between 1946 and 1960.The work is filled with loving detail and minutiae of the kind that baseball fans will appreciate. Scholars of sports history, however, will find the book somehwatsuperficial, based as it is largely on secondary sources, especialy DavidVoigt and Harold Seymour.Rossi never quite lives up to the bookssubtitle--"Off the Field Changes in Baseball"--, for the bulk ofthe volume is an old-fashioned narrative of what happened on the field inthe years between the end of World War II and baseball's decision to expandbeyond sixteen teams. ... Product Description
This series comprises books on particular themes and aspects of local history. Written by experts for a student and lay readership it includes practical volumes that explore the methodology of local research, and volumes that themselves illuminate the hidden lives of ordinary people in times past. Field names - as they survive in the modern countryside, or leave traces in the names of streets and housing estates, or can be retrieved from the past via estate maps and old documents have an intriguing and enjoyable history in their own right. But, more importantly, they are also a rich source of information about the communities that created them. In this latest contribution to the Approaches to Local History series, John Field examines the sources for our knowledge of field-names, and explores their history, variety and dissemination in England. He then goes on to show how even the most commonplace names can yield unsuspected evidence about the changing lives and working practices of our predecessors. Key Features - may seem specialised to the outsider, but place-name studies are an increasingly important and sophisticated part of the discipline of local history. It is not just a book for country-livers: field names survive in many different urban contexts to testify to the rural past beneath the city streets. Note that the book deals with the English experience: the same principles and possibilities apply to Wales, Scotland and Ireland, but John Field does not discuss their distinctive nomenclatures here. ... Product Description
Fiercely nationalistic, at times blatantly jingoistic and politically incorrect by modern-day standards, The Unwanted reflects the passions of a man who was determined to serve his country during the Great War in any capacity he could regardless of rank or pay. As it turned out, he did it best by growing potatoes! When Major John McKendrick Hughes, O.C., C Company, 151st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, and his unit reached Shorncliffe in late 1916, he and the other officers were bluntly informed by the British that they were "unwanted"—officers deemed "surplus to the establishment." Determined to contribute to the war effort, John became one of three Corps Agricultural Officers with the British 2nd Army, charged with growing vegetables and other foodstuffs to feed the troops. This is John’s personal story, based on the letters he sent to his wife nearly every day for 2-1/2 years. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A compilation of the correspondences of an officer in the 151st Battalion
Compiled and edited by John R. Hughes (the grandson of Lt. Col. John McKendrick Hughes) The Unwanted: Great War Letters From The Field is a compilation of the correspondences of an officer in the 151st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, whose unit reached Shorncliffe in late 1916 where he and the other company officers were bluntly informed by the British that they were "unwanted", officers deemed "surplus to the establishment". Determined to contribute to the war effort, Major John Hughes became on of three Corps Agricultural Officers with the British 2nd Army, charged with growing vegetables and other foodstuffs to feed the front line troops. The Unwanted is John's personal story, based on the letters he sent to his wife nearly every day for three and a half years -- and a superb contribution to the still expanding library of World War I personal memoirs and military biographies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Side of the Story.
Film and books have given us an image of World War I as being a bloodbath in the trenches where every available body from all of the companies involved were fed into the fight. John Hughes enlisted in the Canadian Army and was sent to France expecting to be in the infantry. Unbelievably when he got there he found that he was surplus to their needs.

'Hughes,' he was told, 'I want you to start a kitchen garden for me.'
'Yes, Sir. Where will you have it.'
'Oh, wherever you find room.'
'How large do you wnat it, Sir.'
'Oh, make it large enough to supply potatoes and vegetables for a million men.'

And he did.

For three and a half years, Major Hughes was the Agricultural Officer. He farmed using ill and injured cavalry horses and recovering wounded men. While doing this, he wrote a letter to his wife back in Canada nearly every day. This book has been put together from these letters by his grandson, John R. Hughes. It tells a story of World War I that is dramatically different than what we are accustomed to seeing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the college-level art school library
This very technical guide will reach beyond the arts to any involved in color photography or the science of reproduction: Principles Of Color Reproduction covers the underlying principles of successful color reproduction, masking methods, tone reproduction and influences on color results, with many formulas covering densities, color separation and balance, and calculations for reflection. Very technical and perfect for the college-level art school library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A technical standby reference.
I can't believe this is only just now in its second edition -- my 20 year-old copy seemed like ancient wisdom at the time I got it...Back then, scanners were new and very expensive technology, so the book focused on the theory applicable to photography-based techniques. One needed to be well-versed in the science of photography (knowing physics helped) and human color vision to follow the book, but what it dealt with was great. All relevant aspects of color reproduction systems (esp. halftone systems based in inks) were dealt with in some detail, so for the very technically inclined the book was a goldmine of solid thinking and information -- even if many of the literature references were even then several decades old.Though the basic principles never change, I'll be interested to see whether the new edition has been sufficiently updated and revised to keep up with the revolution in the field the last two decades as things have moved over increasingly to electronic/digital ways of doing things. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars What Guide?
There is very little guidance in this book. Douglas spends more time telling stories than actually giving guidance. He gives no help about the interview process or any detail about the different phases of testing. I am sure his profiling career was exciting but I think the times have changed to much for him to give advice for present candidates.

1-0 out of 5 stars Author is out of his element
After reading the author's "Anatomy of Motive" and "Mind Hunter" books, I can tell you that he is a much better storyteller than a career book author. This is unfortunate and disappointing, because his other books are much better written than "Guide to Careers in the FBI." It appears that he tried to apply his storytelling style of writing to his career book, and it does not work.

2-0 out of 5 stars 15 bucks down the drain
"Guide to Careers in the FBI" has too many war stories and not enough of the advice you'll need in such a competitive arena. I was hoping for much more substance.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can I get a refund?
John Douglas's Guide to Careers in the FBI is geared more toward curious middle school students than adults who want to work for a federal law enforcement agency. Besides, 100 percent of the content of the book is available from any criminal justice career counselor or professor at any college in America.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect inside info
I bought this one, as well as Ackerman's book.If you're hoping for those little tidbits of inside information to give you a leg up, forget about it.These authors came from the same tight-lipped establishment you're trying to get into, and they're not about to offer any more than is offered on [line].The Douglas book has no more than 12 pages dedicated to the application/selection process and it's straight from the FBI Web site.If you buy one, I suggest the Ackerman book as it assumes you're already past the "I'm in high school, so what's this FBI thingy" stage. It actually has some very interesting information on what to expect after applying, as well as outlines of the different organizations within, e.g. FBI Scuba Team. ... Product Description
This title contains highlights of his cricketing commentaries by the BBC's very own 'voice of summer'. The imagery and wit of an incomparable broadcaster is captured here in a unique collection of historic, and humorous, moments from the twentieth century. From the 1940s we hear about Bradman's last test, from the 50s Compton's highest Test Score, from the 60s Trueman's 300th Test wicket and Boycott's first ton, and then the 70s with Arlott's 'freaker' (the Lord's streaker) and finally John's last commentary at the Lord's centenary Test in 1980. His commentary was poetic in its elegance, and the pictures he painted with words are vintage: 'the stroke of a man knocking a thistle top off with a walking stick' (on Clive Lloyd in 1975) and 'a colony of silver gulls...perched on the top of the stand as if they were vultures recruited for Lillee' during the Centenary Test in Melbourne. Presented by Peter Baxter, here is a selection of classic clips from the very personification of cricket, brought together for the first time. 'There's never been a commentator like him, there never will be' - Ian Botham. ... Read more

Product Description
In recent years, the focus in groundwater studies has expanded to also include groundwater contamination and remediation studies as a part of resource evaluations. While there are other books on the subject, Field Hydrogeology-A Guide for Site Investigations and Report Preparation provides the first integrated presentation of the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) standards, US Geological Survey (USGS), and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) field techniques. It also includes access to a Web site that contains software for designing aquifer tests and aquifer-recharge experiments.Written by an author with more than 40 years of experience in hydrology and geology, this reference treats the subject from a field standpoint. Useful as a field guide and a textbook, it contains standard methods for planning and undertaking hydrogeologic investigations. It incorporates case studies, contains a glossary of field-hydrogeology technical terms, and provides a detailed list of ASTM standards and key hydrologic Web sites. The guide is based on ASTM standards, EPA, and US Department of Interior (DOI) field technical manuals. The text covers hydrogeologic fundamentals, conceptual models, planning an investigation, surface investigations, subsurface investigations, field inventory, stream flow measurements, water quality measurements, and report preparation. It includes more recent groundwater evaluation techniques such as tracing and isotope techniques. Field Hydrogeology will allow students and seasoned professionals to have a vast array of clearly written descriptive materials and an extensive source of references available at their fingertips.About the Author:John E. Moore, Ph.D., is a hydrogeologist at the USEPA Region 8 in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Moore is also an adjunct professor of hydrology at Metro State College in Denver and a consulting hydrologist. He has more than 40 years of experience in hydrogeology and geology as a researcher, teacher, and consultant. He is internationally recognized as an expert in these fields. Dr. Moore was deputy assistant chief hydrologist and field scientist with the USGS and served as a technical advisor to the USEPA and the U.S. House of Representatives. He is past president of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) and the American Institute of Hydrology (AIH) and is the chairman of the IAH Education Commission. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Field Hydrogeology review by P.E. LaMoreaux Senior Editor Environmental Geologty
The book, Field Hydrogeology, fills a great need to beginning hydrologists and hydrogeologists as a guide for site investigations and report prparation. It covers hydrogeologic concepts, aquifer materials, groundwater movement, recharge and discharge, and also contains a very interesting and important section on rules for professional conduct. The last chapter provides four excellent case histories as good examples for a new hydrogeologist on his first assignment.

A beautiful book that I use to tie in with Memorial Day (or Veteran's Day). You can have students make small red tissue paper poppies or invite someone from a Veteran's association to speak in your class.Students will always be surprised to find out how many of their teachers, relatives, and neighbors are veterans.

5-0 out of 5 stars ......................
I just entered the dots to start my review, because this little poem is so self explanatory, spontaneous and genuine. I really do not know what to say about, I can feel the pain of being a soldiers in Flanders in WW1, but also feel the peace of the resting soldiers that never left Flanders. Lili Marlene is a symbol for the dreams of a WW2 soldier, this poem is the same for WW1.
