An icon in the French-speaking world since the beginning of his career, he was considered by some to have been the French Elvis Presley. His father, Léon Smet (19081989), was Belgian, his mother Huguette Clerc (19202007) was French; the young Hallyday took his stage name from his aunt's husband, American artist Lee Halliday (also a pseudonym). Hallyday, whose music career has spanned a half-century, is one of France's biggest stars. He has completed 100 tours, had 18 platinum albums, and sold more than 110 million records. When the Palais du Trocadéro was built in 1878 on the occasion of the World Exhibition in Paris, the first large concert organ in France was given pride of place in the Salle des Fêtes. Franck wrote his Trois pièces (one of which is the famous Pièce héroïque) for this instrument with its 66 stops. The autograph score contains detailed instructions for the use of the stops. When the work was published five years later, Franck was already organist at the Ste. Clotilde Church and so the indications in the first edition referred to much smaller organs. Our edition makes the most of the opportunity to give both the musical text for the first edition as well as the original registration for the Trocadéro organ. After two years of work, the symphony was completed 22 August 1888. It was premiered at the Paris Conservatory on 17 February 1889 under the direction of Jules Garcin. Franck dedicated it to his pupil Henri Duparc. Orchestration: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, cor anglais, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 cornets, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, harp and strings. César Franck's fame and reputation rest largely upon a small number of compositions, most of them composed toward the end of his life. Of these, the Symphony in D minor was one of his last works. It was first performed only a year before Franck died.
