Excerpt: Johnny Hallyday (born Jean-Philippe Smet; 15 June 1943) is a French singer and actor. An icon in the French-speaking world since the beginning of his career, he was considered by some to have been the French Elvis Presley. His father, Léon Smet (19081989), was Belgian, his mother Huguette Clerc (19202007) was French; the young Hallyday took his stage name from his aunt's husband, American artist Lee Halliday (also a pseudonym). Hallyday, whose music career has spanned a half-century, is one of France's biggest stars. He has completed 100 tours, had 18 platinum albums, and sold more than 110 million records. Hallyday announced his retirement from performing on 3 December 2007 at the age of 64, after a farewell tour. Influenced by Elvis Presley and the 1950s rock revolution, Hallyday became famous in the 1960s for singing rock and roll in French. His first album, Hello Johnny, was released in 1960. In 1961 his cover of "Let's Twist Again" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. He appeared on the American Ed Sullivan Show with American singing star Connie Francis in a show that was taped at the Moulin Rouge nightclub in Paris. He also staged many appearances in the Paris Olympia under the management of the late Bruno Coquatrix. For their first concert, The Jimi Hendrix Experience opened for Johnny Hallyday in Évreux on 13 October 1966. Black and white footage, also from October 1966, exists of Hallyday partying with Hendrix, his manager Chas Chandler and others. At the end of the sixties, Hallyday made a string of albums with Mick Jones and Tommy Brown as musical directors, and Jimmy...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=106358 ... Read more

Product Description
When the Palais du Trocadéro was built in 1878 on the occasion of the World Exhibition in Paris, the first large concert organ in France was given pride of place in the Salle des Fêtes. Franck wrote his Trois pièces (one of which is the famous Pièce héroïque) for this instrument with its 66 stops. The autograph score contains detailed instructions for the use of the stops. When the work was published five years later, Franck was already organist at the Ste. Clotilde Church and so the indications in the first edition referred to much smaller organs. Our edition makes the most of the opportunity to give both the musical text for the first edition as well as the original registration for the Trocadéro organ. Thus, Franck's ideas for the way this magnificent work was to sound is illuminated in two different ways.Brought to you by MindaMusic Store in NC!! ... Read more

Chapters: Operas by César Franck, Symphony in D Minor, Symphonic Variations, Hulda, List of Compositions by César Franck, le Chasseur Maudit, Ghiselle, Prelude, Chorale and Fugue. Excerpt: The Symphony in D minor is the most famous orchestral work and the only symphony written by the 19th-century Belgian composer César Franck. After two years of work, the symphony was completed 22 August 1888. It was premiered at the Paris Conservatory on 17 February 1889 under the direction of Jules Garcin. Franck dedicated it to his pupil Henri Duparc. Orchestration: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, cor anglais, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 cornets, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, harp and strings. César Franck's fame and reputation rest largely upon a small number of compositions, most of them composed toward the end of his life. Of these, the Symphony in D minor was one of his last works. It was first performed only a year before Franck died. The fact that Franck finally chose to write a symphony is itself unusual, given the rarity of the form in 19th-century France, which considered the symphony a redoubt of German music. It is likely that the genesis of the Symphony in D minor followed upon the success of his influential Symphonic Variations for piano and orchestra composed in 1885. Additionally, the success of several works by other French composers had nudged the symphonic form back into favour with the French concert-going public. The Organ Symphony by Camille Saint-Saëns and (although a work for piano and orchestra) the Symphony on a French Mountain Air by Vincent d'Indy, both written in 1886 and popularly received, had helped to revive the symphony as a concert piece, dormant since the appearance of Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique in 1830. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Leopold II (French: , Dutch: ) (9 April 1835 17 December 1909) was King of the Belgians. Born in Brussels the second (but eldest surviving) son of Leopold I and Louise-Marie of Orléans, he succeeded his father to the throne in 1865 and remained king until his death. He was the brother of Empress Carlota of Mexico and first cousin to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Leopold is chiefly remembered as the founder and sole owner of the Congo Free State, a private project undertaken by the King. He used Henry Morton Stanley to help him lay claim to the Congo, an area now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Powers at Berlin Conference agreed to set up the Free State in 1885, on condition that the inhabitants were to be brought into the modern world and that all nations be allowed to trade freely. From the beginning, despite his supression of the slave trade, Leopold essentially ignored these conditions and ran the Congo brutally, by proxy through a mercenary force, for his own personal gain. He extracted a personal fortune from the Congo, initially by the collection of ivory, and after a rise in the price of rubber in the 1890s by forcing the native population to collect sap from rubber plants. His harsh regime was directly or indirectly responsible for the death of millions of people. The Congo became one of the most infamous international scandals of the early 20th century, and Leopold was ultimately...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=57731 ... Read more
