Rural places are today calling everyone, George Main suggests, into relationships of mutual care. ... Read more

Product Description
This critical study of NASA's space shuttle program provides an in-depth examination of the events, decisions, and policies that may have contributed to the horrific destruction of the shuttles Challenger and Columbia. It first traces the early development of NASA's shuttle program, specifically examining the problems associated with the designs of shuttles OV-099 (which was to become Challenger) and OV-102 (which was to become Columbia).

The reader is then taken through a detailed look at the first successful flights made by Challenger and Columbia and the cancellation of top-secret Shuttle flight 51-C (which would have launched under nearly identical weather conditions as the ill-fated Challenger). An in-depth assessment of the shuttles' disastrous final launches follows, including detailed accounts of the post-flight search and rescue operations, the official investigations into each accident, and the impact of each disaster on the future of NASA's manned space program. ... Product Description

One of the fastest growing scientific disciplines in recent history is conservation biology. A response of the scientific community to the massive environmental changes taking place on Earth, its goal is to enable society to anticipate, prevent, and reduce ecological damage, and to generate the scientific information from which effective conservation strategies and policies can be designed and implemented.

In 1989, the Society for Conservation Biology and Island Press produced Research Priorities for Conservation Biology, a slim volume that set forth the findings of experts who had gathered to outline research needs for the near future, and which served as a guidepost for the field throughout the 1990s. In January 2000, leaders of the Society for Conservation Biology convened a similar group to reach consensus on where the field now stands and to determine the major, compelling research priorities for the next decade. Conservation Biology: Research Priorities for the Next Decade presents the results of that gathering.

The book:

  • notes progress or changes in the state of global biodiversity over the past decade and discusses overarching themes that influence all areas of conservation
  • offers ten chapters by leading experts that summarize the status of knowledge in key areas ranging from marine conservation to ecological restoration to conservation medicine
  • sets forth research priorities for each area
  • describes gaps in current knowledge that are impeding the ability of conservation practitioners to carry out their work

A final synthesis chapter brings together cross-cutting themes that integrate the diverse topics within the context of global biodiversity loss, and presents a call to action for scientists and others working in the field.

Conservation Biology: Research Priorities for the Next Decade represents an indispensable guide to the research that is most urgently needed to support effective conservation, and will be must reading for anyone involved with the field of conservation biology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a classic
This book brings a series of chapters that still nowadays are highly cited. I bouhgt it seccialy because there is a chapter written by Stephen Hubbell and Robin Foster about neutrality in tree communities. This ideias formed the basis of the The Unified Neutral Theory of Biodiversity and Biogeography (MPB-32) (Monographs in Population Biology). Moreover, chapters by Gilpin, Diamond, Pimm and Lovejoy enrich that book greatly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Detail
This book claims to be a guide for lawyers among others but fails to give case citations or even case names in the one section that is written by a lawyer. This leaves the inquisitive reader to try and decipher which federal case is being referred to based on the fact description or holding. There must be better choices on this topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shelby Keiser notwithstanding, this book is helpful
I understand the ire of a person who resents having to be compared with the general population, rather than to a specialized group the person wishes to become a member of, to have accommodations, but I feel that in her chapter on testing accommodations she does explain her viewpoint and the legal underpinnings of her opinion. In general, this book is a very good guide to documentation standards, provides forms that are useful, and is well worth the money as a reference book. 3-0 out of 5 stars Celebrating Freedom of Speech in Particular.
America was only eleven years since independence was won after a fierce battle when John Hancock (many people think it was John Henry) and his group signed the Constitution on September 17, 1787.This year we will celebrate the 219th anniversary in diverse ways. The United States are now a global community and, with a population of three hundred million, the celebrations will be different.Around the world, constitutions represent a positive social contract between citizens and the government."We hope these things to be self-evident.At a small college in Tennessee, the Preamble was read by a Mexican in her native Spanish; also by students using French, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, sign language, and finally English. It's too bad that English is no longer the native language.

Product Description

The workforce of the future promises to be very different from that of the past. A generation ago, there were few workers over the age of 65, but in the future we will see many more employees remain on the job longer than ever before. At the same time, as global markets grow more closely integrated, companies are having to reinvent the workplace, which requires more skilled, more reliable, and more flexible employees. Benefits for the Workplace of the Future explores how workforce and workplace changes are reshaping the form and design of employee benefits and what these trends portend for the future of compensation.

An increasingly diverse range of workers and new types of companies are forcing a redefinition of what it means to be an employee, what it means to offer someone a job, and how to compensate workers. These changes are spurring nontraditional benefits, such as child and elder care, flexible medical benefits, employee assistance programs, and investment education. Major developments in the pension and health care arenas provide new opportunities and challenges for rank and file workers as they are asked to take on more responsibility for their own benefits design.

Contributors to the volume—academics, employers, consultants, and policymakers—evaluate these trends and their implications. They chart new methods for developing benefits plans and provide assessments of past trends and clear-eyed forecasts for future benefit challenges. The book will be invaluable to those who seek to structure and benefit from well-designed compensation packages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Benefits for the Workplace of the Future
From Noteworthy Books in Industrial Relations and Labor Economics, Princeton University (July 2004):
"The essays in this volume examine how benefits and compensation packages will respond to the need for economic restructuring, demographic shifts and changes in the role of government versus private sector. The chapters in the first section deal with developments in the future workplace and outline the implications for benefit coverage and design. The authors in the second section look at challenges to benefits and compensation design such as recession and economic volatility, the interaction of business conditions with the slower labor growth predicted for the future, and the benefit effects of the evolving labor-management relationship. The case and sector studies in the last three chapters provide insights into specific company and sectoral practices."

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but very dated guidebook for International Business Law
I bought this book as study-guide/hornbook for International Business Transactions, International Trade, and Customs law courses.Overall, the book provides an excellent synopsis of the listed subjects. However, it is very dated. The book was purportedly updated in 2005.It was, but only partially. There are still references to Franks, Deutschmarks, the Soviet Union, etc.Additionally, the cases and examples cited are almost all at least 10 years old. Little since the 1990's apears to have been changed in the book. It looks like someone did a spotty, rushed job of trying to update the book. I frankly know of nothing better, so until there is one I can only recommend this book for international trade and business law topics. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is intended to change your mind about what is possible for you to achieve. By the time you finish reading the first chapter, you will be aware of the possibility of acquiring a wide range of new skills, talents, and aptitudes. By the time you finish the final chapter, you will have the tools you need to master an accelerated skill acquisition process--the EMPRINT method--that you can use to turn those possibilities into accomplishments.

The purpose of this book, then, is to provide you with tools that will enable you to identify and acquire (or transfer to others) desirable human aptitudes. The purpose of this preface is to introduce you to the approach we used to create the EMPRINT method, as well as to create other methods and self-improvement formats that are described in other books by the authors. We call our approach Mental Aptitude Patterning. Knowing at least a little about Mental Aptitude Patterning will enable you to better appreciate both how we created the EMPRINT method, and how the method can be used to enhance the skills of individuals, as well as of large groups of people. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating, one-of-a-kind book
This book is great.

I recommend it if you have the commitment already in place to learn about what other people do."The Emprint Method" can teach you what to ask people about what they do.The book won't teach you how to read minds, but it will teach you to ask particular questions. The answers to those questions teach you how and why another person performs the activity you want to learn how to do yourself.

Even better, the method taught in "The Emprint Method" relies on ordinary communication and observation to help you learn about what another person does.If you apply the Emprint Method, you can volunteer what kinds of questions you will ask the person you want to model before you begin modeling that person. The Emprint method modeling process will still work.

I think the authors of "The Emprint Method" didn't sacrifice their knowledge to produce this book. Instead, the authors communicated what they know about modeling human behavior in a principled and thorough manner."The Emprint Method" is worth buying.

2-0 out of 5 stars OOOHH MY GOD, THIS BOOK MELTED MY BRAIN
I consider myself (as do others) to be a well read individual that understands new concepts quickly. How can you possibly get through this book without wanting to physically harm yourself or verbally abuse theauthors for subjecting you to such verbose caca mess. Leslie, babe, let'smodel the acroynm KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and then write a book.Great gift for that special someone who has WAY TOO MUCH TIME ON THEIRHANDS!

3-0 out of 5 stars Book for (very advanced) modellers - a toughie!
A very technical book, fascinating but not for the faint hearted - this is modelling the academic way. The book leads you through the seven types of variables necessary to elicit each 'stage' of behaviour and a behaviour mayhave many stages. It requires a dedicated approach to learning all this newelicitation methods and really guts you out in the last few pages. Why?Because after showing you how to elicit modelling variables which, admittedly is quite exciting, it tells you that there is not enough roomleft to talk in depth about installation of behaviours - and suggestsanother book - Know How! (which by, the way doesn't explain itself thatclearly either). If you know the basic TOTE method this is a good book tocannabalise elicitation questions from - otherwise it requires morededication than I am prepared to give it. ... Read more

Product Description
The moving picture, film, and television have exerted an unmatched influence throughout the 20th century, equally documenting and constructing our reality. It is the peculiar power of the moving image that while it may be depicting a fiction, our viewing of it is real and therefore the experience and memory we take away from it is filed away with all the other events and memories that have actually happened to us. The artists in CUT have taken the material of their reality--the movie and the news program--and manipulated it to reveal its power to communicate and shape reality. Clearly indebted to the appropriation strategies of the 1980s and sampling in hip hop and rap music of the 1990s, these artists are united by their gestural use of editing. Whether through looping, repetition, erasure, or compression, their active manipulation of their medium recalls the importance that action was given by Richard Serra in 1968, when he published Verb List, a list of actions that a sculptor could use to create sculpture: to roll, to crease, to fold, to cut, etc. CUT explores the actions through which artists create videos. Through the physical manipulation of the most familiar of media, they restructure reality, making the familiar unfamiliar and instilling in the viewer the opportunity to comprehend and distinguish a new reality. Included are works by Candice Breitz, Omar Fast, Douglas Gordon, Michael Joaquin Grey, Pierre Huyghe, Christian Marclay, Jennifer & Kevin McCoy, and Paul Pfeiffer.
