Product Description
Percy Grainger was one of the most colourful of this century's cultural figures. The All-Round Man depicts that scrambling diversity through seventy-six challenging letters from Grainger's "American" years, 1914-61.These letters are fascination to read: they are cultivated "rambles" (as Grainger actually called several of his compositions), not dissimilar to today's telephone conversations.Often written in Grainger's crunchy "Blue-eyed English", they explore uninhibitedly every corner of his public and private life. They reflect the magnificent attempts of a great but flawed mind to encompass the world. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Percy Grainger," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Percy Grainger in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Percy Grainger when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Percy Grainger, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt: George Percy Grainger (8 July 1882 20 February 1961) was an Australian-born composer, and pianist, who worked under the stage name of Percy Aldridge Grainger. Percy Grainger was born in Brighton, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. His father John Harry Grainger was a successful and talented architect who grew up in France and was educated in a monastery school in Yvetot. He emigrated from London, England in 1876. John Grainger's business partner and best friend was David Mitchell, the father of Nellie Melba. Her father was determined to prevent Nellie from taking up singing as a career and John Grainger is credited with encouraging her singing. He maintained a close friendship with Nellie and later designed her house "Coombe Cottage" in 1912. Percy Grainger's mother, Rose (née Rosa Annie Aldridge; 3 July 1861, Adelaide, South Australia 30 April 1922, New York City), was the daughter of George Aldridge and Sarah Jane Aldridge (née Brown), hoteliers from Adelaide, also of English immigrant stock. Graingers mother contracted syphilis, from her husband, early in the marriage and after the birth of Percy ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=254507 ... Read more

Excerpt: Melissa "Missy" Morrison Higgins (born 19 August 1983) is an Australian pop singer-songwriter, musician and actor, her No. 1 albums are The Sound of White (2004) and On a Clear Night (2007), and her Top Ten singles are "Scar", "The Special Two", "Steer" and "Where I Stood". From a musical family in Melbourne, she played piano by age six and sang at twelve. While boarding at Geelong Grammar School, she wrote a song for an assignment which was then entered into the national Unearthed radio competition for unsigned artists. Higgins won and signed recording contracts with Eleven and Warner Bros. After taking time off, backpacking in Europe, she recorded her first album The Sound of White, which was released in 2004. The album, and its first single, "Scar" both went to No. 1 on the relevant Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Charts. Its second single, "The Special Two", went to No. 2. Higgins was nominated for five ARIA Music Awards that year and won 'Best Pop Release' for "Scar". In 2005 she was nominated for seven more awards and won five. She won her seventh ARIA in 2007. In 2006, Higgins wrote new material for her second album, and following a US tour she recorded On a Clear Night, which gave her another No. 1 single with "Steer". Higgins has conducted several well received Australian tours and performed ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6996933 ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Ron Grainer (11 August 1922 - 21 February 1981) was an Australian-born composer who worked for most of his professional career in the United Kingdom. He is mostly remembered for his film and television music. Grainer was born in Atherton, Queensland, Australia. He studied music under Sir Eugene Goosens at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, but this was interrupted by World War II. He was enlisted to the Australian Army and was injured, almost losing a leg. Moving to Britain in the 1950s, Grainer collaborated with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop on a number of television series themes, including Giants of Steam (a documentary about railways) and in 1963 on the science fiction series Doctor Who. Grainer was so impressed with Delia Derbyshire's electronic realisation of his score (which remained the standard version of the Doctor Who theme for 18 years) that he is reputed to have said on hearing it, "Did I really write that?" He also offered to split his royalty with her, but this was prevented by BBC bureaucracy. The Doctor Who theme is one of Grainer's two most famous compositions, the other being the theme music for the ITC series The Prisoner, the latter theme based upon an earlier piece of music he had written entitled The Age of Elegance. In each case, the popularity is not based on the cult classic status of the series, but upon the music itself, which was uniquely suited to the storyline. The theme from Doctor Who has a driving-yet-mysterious sound, wh...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Lloyd Albert Lancaster Lloyd (29 February 1908- 29 September 1982), usually known as A. L. Lloyd or Bert Lloyd , was an English folk singer and collector of folk songs, and as such was a key figure in the folk music revival of the 1950s and 1960s.Early life Lloyd was born in Wandsworth in London, his father was an AA Patrolman and failed smallholder. His mother sang songs around the house and according to Lloyd mimicked the Gipsy singers that she'd heard. By the age of fifteen his mother had died and his father, an ex-soldier, was a semi-invalid, and Lloyd was sent as an assisted migrant to Australia in a scheme organised by the British Legion . There, from 1924-1930, he worked on various sheep stations in New South Wales and it was during this time that he began to write down folksongs he learned. . In the outback of New South Wales he discovered that he could access the State Library and order books - his special interests being art and music he could get a grasp of those topics without seeing a painting or hearing any music. He also bought a wind-up gramophone and began to investigate some of the classical music he had previously... ... Read more

Excerpt: Eileen Alannah Joyce CMG (1 January 1908 25 March 1991) was an Australian pianist whose career spanned more than 30 years. She lived in England in her adult years. Her recordings made her popular internationally (less so in the USA) in the 1930s and 1940s, particularly during World War II; at her zenith she was compared in popular esteem with Gracie Fields and Vera Lynn. When she played in Berlin in 1947 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, an eminent German critic classed her with Clara Schumann, Sophie Menter and Teresa Carreño. When she performed in the United States in 1950, Irving Kolodin called her "the world's greatest unknown pianist". She became even better known during the 1950s, when she played 50 recitals a year in London alone, which were always sold out. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4769108 ... Read more

Excerpt: Lincolnshire Posy is a piece by Percy Grainger for concert band, composed in 1937 for the American Bandmasters Association. Considered Grainger's masterpiece, the 16-minute-long work is composed of six movements, each adapted from folk songs that Grainger had collected on a 19051906 trip to Lincolnshire, England. The work debuted with three of the movements on March 7, 1937 by the Milwaukee Symphonic Band, a group composed of members from several bands including the Blatz Brewery and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer factory worker bands in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Unlike other composers that attempted to alter and modernize folk music for band, such as Ralph Vaughan Williams (see English Folk Song Suite), Grainger wished to maintain the exact sense of stylizing that he experienced from the singers. Grainger wrote: Grainger dedicated his "bunch of Wildflowers" to "the old folksingers who sang so sweetly to me." The piece is scored for piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, English horn (ad lib), 2 bassoons, contrabassoon (ad lib), E-flat clarinet, 3 B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, 6 saxophones (soprano, 2 altos, tenor, baritone and bass (ad lib)), 3 cornets or trumpets, 4 horns, 3 trombones, baritone horn, euphonium, tuba, string bass, timpani, xylophone, handbells, tubular bells (ad lib), snare drum, bass drum and cymbals. Originally entitled Dublin Bay, the first movement of Lincolnshire Posy is the shortest a brisk, simple, lilted melody in 6/8 time. The main theme of the movement is presented first in the muted trumpets and is set against a war-like motif in the horns. Like the fourth movement, this movement ends in a serene, s...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=9474467 ... Read more
