A hymn is a type of song, usually religious, specifically written for the purpose of praise, adoration or prayer, and typically addressed to a god or other religiously significant figure. The word hymn derives from Greek µ?o? hymnos "a song of praise", which itself is derived from the Proto-Indo-European stem *sh2em- "to sing" and is related to Hittite išamai "he sings" and Sanskrit s?man "song".

Jones was a gifted multi-instrumentalist, and known for the use of non-traditional instruments such as the sitar and marimba and to experiment with the slide guitar in the work of The Rolling Stones. Jones is also remembered for cultivating his image with flamboyant attire and a lifestyle that included recreational drug use during the dawn of a new youth culture that centered around "sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll." Jones was born in the Park Nursing Home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on 28 February 1942. An attack of croup at the age of four left him with asthma, which lasted for the rest of his life.
