Product Description

A New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post best seller, now available with a new chapter on events in Afghanistan plus an exclusive online access code for three downloadable episodes of War Stories!

What is a hero? Oliver North says, “Real heroes are selfless. Those who serve America in harm’s way in the war against radical Islam have that quality in abundance. And so do their families and loved ones at home. Yet, they rarely get the attention or coverage they deserve . . . I never cease to be amazed at the self-discipline of these brave young Americans. They can endure the adrenaline-pumping violence of enemy engagement, and then, just minutes later, help school children get safely to their classes . . . No nation—ours included—has ever had a military force better than the one we have today.”

In American Heroes, North offers an inspiring, first-hand account of the extraordinary men and women defending America against radical Islamic terror from his perspective as a forty year member of the United States military, a member of the National Security Council staff and serving as the U.S. counter-terrorism coordinator from 1983-1986. This patriotic book also pulls in the very latest reports and exclusive full-color photographs from War Stories, the award-winning FOX News Channel series hosted by North.

5-0 out of 5 stars American Heroes rings with truth and clarity!
American Heroes is by far one of the the most well-written books I've read on the military. It's packed with informative historical nuggets about how we got to "here," witticisms that make me laugh, but it also contains a riveting and heart-wrenching accounts of what our heroes are facing or have faced (at home and abroad. I've cried, laughed, and taken copious notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heroes
"A Hero isn't something you are, it's something you do."This book is a must read for anyone who really cares about the men and women in our armed forces. It is a page turner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Jingoist Dribble
This book can basically be summed up by saying that everything the U.S. has done has been honorable. When the U.S. overthrows democratically elected governments and installs brutal dictators like it did in Chile and Iran for the benefit of U.S. investors and corporations, it is here stated as a grand sacrifice to protect American interests, freedom, and our way of life.

Oliver North was involved in Iran-Contra which was the illegal funding of a terrorist organization controlled by Washington to overthrow democracy in Nicaragua using money from the sale of missiles to Iran.Mr. North will now have you believe that the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are noble and about freedom. That the people of America would not have freedom if U.S. soldiers were not invading the middle east.Iraq meanwhile has been turned into a basket case of a country with tribalism, warlordism, and sectarianism.Violence is down lately yes but simply because there is no one left to kill in large areas of the country now filled with mass graves. The U.S. has built huge military bases and the largest Embassy in the world with plans to stay indefinitely to control and oversee the regions vast oil reserves. The Iraq government is currently trying to negotiate for a 2011 U.S. withdrawal with a reluctant America even though poll after poll shows that a large majority of Iraqi's oppose a U.S. military presence, and believe that US forces make the situation worse, including the "surge." But their opinion doesn't count right?

This book is basically for the uninformed who want to believe in a greater good.An American "Exceptionalism", if you will, of imperial doctrine not unlike the beliefs of former imperial Britain, France, Japan, Germany, ect. They said the same things about their noble and heroic efforts to change the world. This is utter garbage. One star because I couldn't give it zero!

5-0 out of 5 stars The heroes of our nation
Oliver North's writing makes you feel like you are with him---with our Soldiers and Marines. You can sense his heart breaking for those families who pay the ultimate sacrifice for our nation---giving their young people's lives. Truly a book that needs to be read by all Americans!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
Thank God for good men like Oliver North.I wish we could have more men in power with his faith and his understanding of our military's capabilities and purpose.I am also very thankful for the work being done in Iraq and Afganistan. It is not a finished work nor a perfect work, but it is certainly not a flawed effort as our news outlets lead us to believe.

Brining our troops home before they feel they are finished is not "supporting our troups."We need to let the military decide when it is time to come home and stop letting our brilliant politcians and reporters use their deployment as a political leveraging issue.

I really enjoyed this book and it truly displays the unique mindset and committment that our service men and women possses. If we could have an entire nation of men and women like the ones that fill our armed forces, we could achieve so much more. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm Starting to Understand the Appeal
I admit, I am a newbie to the paranormal genre.I keep hearing about these books (I guess the TWILIGHT phenomenon was the tipping point), so I decided to try one just to see what I have been missing. And now I understand the appeal!

What makes VAMPIRE RESURRECTION so addictive is its seamless commingling of real history (the lost colony of Roanoke) with the utterly supernatural and horrific.I tend to like books that attempt to solve a mystery in the past (for example, Josephine Tey's THE DAUGHTER OF TIME), but I'm used to them putting forth what could be a "reasonable" explanation.VAMPIRE RESURRECTION goes the completely fictional route of tying the colony's disappearance to an evil vampire, and I ate it up!Holton writes with such verve that I had no trouble suspending my disbelief immediately, and the pacing and story kept me interested all the way through. Now, when the topic of Roanoke comes up in conversation, I will be able to provide the answer, "Vampires," and have a source to which I can send the non-believers.:)

This is really a terrific work of imagination (and impressive research) and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Paranormal/vampire
In 1587 a new colony was settling on Roanoke Island in Virginia. Things began happening, people began to disappear, and then a year later the whole population vanished without any reasons left behind. Many had their own theories, and then only a couple knew the truth.

Vampires, breeding-making more of their kind... one very old French vampire has been resurrected by the frat boy Ben that found the hidden containment area of Count Jean Phillipe Roget. The Count uses Ben to find out information and has him under a zombie like trance. Roget is out to fill his lust for blood that he has been denied for so long. Once he sees the re-enactment of 1587 he knows what he must do... destroy!

Native American Legend says that Jumlin, or The Dark One possessed a tribe chief when he begged for his wife to become with child. From that moment on Jumlin created those of his kind, vampires, and spread throughout the world. One man Jay Silver knows what must be done, his ancestors were the ones to contain Jean Phillipe Roget and now he must find a way to rid the world of this evil.

Vampire Resurrection by Carlotta G. Holton is a paranormal fiction book that has a lot going on. There are a lot of characters and sometimes it does get overwhelming, then at times there was too much focus on the small details instead of moving along with the story. The book was well written, and had a nice story line, and of course I'm a huge vampire fan so I loved reading Ms. Holton's take on the paranormal genre that is close to my heart. This is easily readable for all ages from Young Adult and up, this novel is not bad, but there were so many secondary characters that I got distracted. 3.5 Hearts

Product Description
This document contains the two appendixes (approx. 6,900 words) from For Members Only for those who just want the current club guide.

Appendix A: The Club Guide
Info on Chicago's top private clubs, including: Name, address, phone, website, founding date, famous members, mission/motto, members, dominant professions of members, joining procedures, initiation fees, dues, collection highlights, meeting facilities, athletic facilities, club activities, guest facilities, average age of membership, annual events, year non-whites first admitted, non-whites as percent of total membership, year women first admitted, women as percent of total membership, and more.

Appendix B: The ABCs of Membership: A Glossary

Chicago's Private Clubs: A Rich and Unexpected History

There wouldn't be a Burnham Plan. The World's Columbian Exposition wouldn't be in our history books. Al Capone might have lived out his days with a comfortable grasp on Chicago's crime rackets. . . . The 2000 moratorium on the death penalty in Illinois might not have had the support it did, and Millennium Park might still be merely a grand idea instead of the showpiece it is today.

As Lisa Holton writes in her introduction, Chicago would be a very different place without the contributions made by the members of the city's private social clubs. Yet most of us walk past their stately facades without any idea what goes on within. Holton, a freelance writer and former business editor of the Chicago Sun-Times, reveals a fascinating history of the hidden world that has united--and divided--the city's leaders since Chicago's first days.

These clubs have been oases for the rich and privileged, playgrounds for the social set, private watering holes for the city's movers and shakers. Places that, certainly at their inception, most of us couldn't get in.

Here's your chance to enter that world, to see how the business, nonprofit, and political leaders of Chicago shaped the city for more than 140 years behind these closed doors. With chapters devoted to the city's top clubs and a guide to current membership requirements, explore the past, present, and future of these elite communities. Learn how clubs that flourished in the days of Marshall Field and Louis Sullivan, enclaves once restricted by race, sex, and birthright, have adapted to a modern society. Whether you're a prospective member or a student of Chicago history, For Members Only is the first comprehensive book consolidating the histories of these current and former landmark clubs in words, pictures, and first-person commentary. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Island Inferno #2
Great book for kids.I have both the 1st and 2nd book but had to quit, much to simple for adults

1-0 out of 5 stars Is there an editor in the house?
The book is OK, but OMG, the Kindle version is very shabby! Lot's of misspelled words, missing words, letters, looks like bad font substitution. Sometimes you don't know if the author is introducing a new word, or if it is just a badly mangled English word. Really, it looks like the result of something run through OCR software and then nobody double-checked (or even single checked) the results. Really disappointing format. I don't think it is a 'Kindle' issue, as I have downloaded and read nearly 30 titles.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good - but - disappointing
We all seek new authors and thought I found one to follow. But, the plot seemed too familiar and and I kept stumbling over the many references to personal faith and religion. They just seemed out of place and too numerous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Page-turning suspense. I ate this story up!
Island Inferno is a page-turning suspense novel that you don't want to miss. I had not read the first book in the series and didn't feel like I missed out, so I think this can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel (though now that I've finished the story I'm dying to read the sequel).

The author takes you to numerous settings and countries and puts you into the heads of the good guys and the bad. In some ways this book made me feel like I was in Jurassic Park, but minus the dinosaurs. Island Inferno even had college students exploring the island, totally unsuspecting what was going on behind the vegetation. And that bottled water was downright scary because you never knew when someone would take a swig and possible blow up. I couldn't stop reading this book! It contained enemies who were just as frightening and deadly as man-eating dinosaurs, and you never knew when they would appear and kill someone. Very exciting and nerve-wracking.

I also totally loved the special forces and commando feel of the book. You can see that the author has experience because the details show that he knows what he's writing about, which makes it feel even more real. My favorite characters were Rip and Fernanda. The end of the story was fabulous and even a tad romantic, and while it wrapped up some details, it left just enough loose ends for a sequel.

The spiritual thread in this story truly impressed me--how the circumstances opened up situations where people truly wanted to know God in a personal way. It came out very naturally through the plot, and in my opinion was one of the best things about the story. While packed with a variety of violent situations (I'm quite squeamish and the details were awesome), the story would be lifeless without the James Bond/Mission Impossible feel to it. I highly recommend this book! In fact, I think it would make an awesome movie, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Plot and Character - Shaken, Stirred and Blended
This is a true blend of a character/relationship driven story and a plot powered novel. Holton's diverse and fascinating experiences add intriguing depth to a plot that involves so many characters it could get out of control. But Holton manages to keep things moving along and buttoned down.

I did get lost in some of the jargon, but tool/technology lovers should dig the references to guns, spy equipment, explosives and some other things that went way over my head.

Into this tight mix, Holton, weaves a fair amount of spiritual undertones and truths.

The jungle atmosphere and a legend added intensity to the plot. I appreciated Holton's clarity and strength with point of view. He stayed within the same character's head throughout each scene, making the read much more enjoyable for me.

Action lovers are likely to devour "Island", suspense fans should find much to like, too.

This book is directed toward several audiences. First, it is designed for university courses in HRD. We argue that every HRD academic program needs a course that teaches the foundations of the field. Second, HRD researchers will find the book thought-provoking and useful as a guide to core research issues. Third, it is written for reflective practitioners who actively seek to lead the field as it grows and matures. Finally, almost every practitioner will find parts of the book that will add depth to their practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic in the field
Although it has a long and rich history, HRD has emerged only recently as a distinct discipline and field of practice. This book provides an review and synthesis of how many fields (psychology, economics, systems theory, and others) have contributed to the development of HRD. In so doing it details how these fields, along with a growing body of research, have contributed to the development of the theoretical and philosophical foundations and HRDs emergence as a unique discipline. This is not a quick "how-to" book but rather a scholarly examination of the core beliefs, values, worldview, and principles that are the framework for HRD. It will be of primary interest to academics, scholars, and researchers. It also offers reflective practitioners the opportunity to re-examine the beliefs, values, and approaches that guide their work. The book is logically organized, well written, and replete with diagrams, models, and graphics that illustrate and clarify key concepts. Sure to become a classic text and reference, I highly recommend it to anyone who seeks to develop a deeper understanding of Human Resource Development.

Product Description
A fun and exciting look at the history, current status and linguistics of the Chinook Jargon pidgin.

This book provides the traveler and resident alike with a unique insight into an area where few modern explorers venture – Native American languages. As custodians of their cultures, these languages are disappearing from the North American landscape. Two hundred ninety of the 300 indigenous languages will be extinct within the next century unless present trends are reversed.

Chinook Jargon is the most accessible of all the Native American languages. With a small utilitarian vocabulary and straightforward syntax, it was the lingua franca of the Northwest for most of the 1800s. One hundred thousand Native Americans, settlers and immigrants were using it in 1875. Enough Chinook Jargon can be learned in a few hours to enjoy simple conversation. This book provides added entertainment by deciphering place names in the Northwest. You’ll help preserve this American pidgin by participating in this enriching experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars To start or refersh...
This is a very good book to read for both new and experienced employees. It guides them on how to start correct and avoid common mistakes most experienced employee make. It's quick to read and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!
Authors Elwood F. Holton III and Sharon S. Naquin, both academics, invested substantial research to produce a little book that might just solve the very big midlife quandaries faced by workers whose jobs have been downsized or exported to another country. People who thought they would never need to take a different job find themselves the new person in a new office again, with no tools to help them cope other than the lessons of the corporate culture they left behind. However, using old cultural information in a new place is the road to disaster, according to the learned authors, who do a fine job of explaining why. Businesses are culture clubs and new hires must learn to get along before they can get ahead. At fewer than 100 pages, this is, nevertheless, a little redundant. Perhaps we need to hear the bell ring clearly, over and over, for the content is useful stuff simply told. For that reason, We recommend this to anyone contemplating a move, to every new hire and to every HR officer as part of the pre-employment package given to all experienced applicants.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book overall but lacks first 90 day strategy
This is a good book oveall. It offerssome valuable insight
regarding being succesful in your new job. However, this book never mentions the 90 day probationary period. I beleive this is becoming more and more important in our competitive work force. A lot of the material is common sense. Like avoiding
comparing jobs too much.

Still, it's a good book overall and I like the 12-step program.

3-0 out of 5 stars A valuable asset when changing jobs or positions
Whenever you move from one assignment to another in your professional life, whether due to a promotion or a complete career change, the move carries with it a requirement to relearn some parts of your job and how you act at work. This book attempts to establish a template to help you through that process.

The book does a good job of laying out the basic requirements you need to address when entering a new job, laying out a one-year, twelve-step plan to ensure you are accepted by your co-workers and supervisors, all of which is designed to make sure you do a better job at your new position. The authors first define the problem, pointing out how newcomers are generally perceived in organizations, and pitfalls they tend to encounter while trying to gain acceptance. They then take you through their twelve-steps, which are prioritized to take you through your first year at work while increasing your credibility with your new co-workers.By working through their twelve steps, you present a better image to the outside, which helps get you accepted into the organization more quickly. And once that is done, you will be far more effective in executing your duties and helping your organization improve.

The book is pretty slim, and some additional discussion of each step would make it more valuable. As a baseline, however, this book provides a good way to approach any new position. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly difficult to understand
I am a graduate student taking this course and I have already had a brief introduction about Adult Learning. While the book is definitely useful, factual, etc., the language is very complicated. I am half way through the book and I have only been able to retain a fraction of what I have read. This is not a book for simple reading/understanding for an average student, but rather an assortment of sentences that do not flow into organized paragraphs. I cannot wait for this class to be over because I cannot stand this textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars nice job!
I received what the seller described and it arrived on time. I liked this shopping!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Adult learner
A recommended reference to those who are taking andragogy, adult education, life long education, training and development or alike in HRD or HRM programmes at undergraduate and graduate level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning and aging adults who want to learn
Definitely definitive. Must read for today's web designers, instuctional designers, course developers, and any educator trying to figure out how to get instruction to be more inclusive for all adults, including aging learners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for introduction to topic
"This is an excellent introduction to andragogy, adult learning. Knowles (known as the "Father of Andragogy") expertly introduces concepts and theories surrounding this field. While it may appear to be related only in an educational context, knowing how adults learn could help facilitate the way new products, process, and even systems are introduced and used within an organization. It's well worth the time to understand. I would couple this book with "Learning in Adulthood" by Sharan B. Merriam & Rosemary S. Caffarella. "

This book is the foundation, current and more recent research exists...happy reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done!!
I am an M&A professional so valuations are key in my business. As of recently (August 09), I now have a decent book that I can hand out to my interns as an introduction. I've read many Valuation books over the years and this is the best intro I've seen to date. Not that some of the others were bad, rather, this one is really really good. Good show! Five well deserved stars!!! ... Read more
