Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "John Jenkins," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have John Jenkins in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with John Jenkins when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name John Jenkins, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
This book offers a revisionary account of key epistemological concepts and doctrines of St. Thomas Aquinas, particularly his concept of scientia (science). It proposes a new interpretation of the purpose and composition of Aquinas' most mature and influential work, the Summa theologiae, which has traditionally been regarded as a work for neophytes in theology. John Jenkins' comprehensive and original study will be of interest to readers in philosophy, theology and medieval studies. ... Read more

Product Description
John Major's rapid rise to power has left people of all political persuasions asking, "Who is the Prime Minister?". This book provides the answer. It tells the story of Major's political career as it developed, in the words of the journalists who wrote about him all the time. All the articles - from both the national and the regional press - represent the original coverage of events as they happened, viewed both from Fleet Street and from Major's Cambridgeshire constituency. From Major's entry into Parliament in 1979 as MP for Huntingdon, through his first ministerial appointment, in the Department of Health in 1985, to his sudden elevation to the premiership in 1990, all the details are here: the facts and the figures, the campaigns and the policies, the modest successes and the blazing triumphs. Reports and features covering his early life, his political infancy as a Lambeth councillor and his initial attempts to win a parlimentary seat in the general election of 1974 are also included. Illustrated with 60 photographs spanning the full eleven and a half years of his parliamentary career, this book is enlivened by newspaper headlines and Press Association timed newsflashes. It provides an assessment of the man whose meteoric ascent through the House of Commons has made him the nation's youngest Prime Minister since Lord Rosebery. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable insight into the mid-Victorian House of Commons
From his election in 1857 until his resignation of his candidacy in 1865, Sir John Trelawny served as a Member of Parliament for the borough of Tavistock, in the second of what would eventually be three periods in the House of Commons.A radical Liberal, he was too independent to serve in government and was best remembered as a back-bencher who took the lead in the effort to abolish church rates.Yet Trelawny also kept a diary of his activities and observations while in Parliament, one which gives its readers insight into the political world in which he operated..

As the editor, T. A. Jenkins, notes in his introduction, the diary is limited in its scope. There is little attention to the debates in the House of Lords and even less to any committee work he performed. What it does offer, though, is a commentary on the House of Commons from the fall of Palmerston's first government to the end of his second administration.Trelawny's entries flesh out the debates in the Commons, adding color to the black-and-white columns of Hansard's while offering us characterizations of the leading political figures of his era from his perspective as a maverick back-bencher.Making all of this accessible is Jenkins, who guides the reader through the intricacies of parliamentary politics and identifies the myriad figures populating the pages. The result is a unique window into the politics of mid-Victorian Britain, one that is required reading for any student of the subject. ... Product Description
John Jewel (1521 - 1571) has long been regarded as one of the key figures in the shaping of the Anglican Church. A Marian exile, he returned to England upon the accession of Elizabeth I, and was appointed bishop of Salisbury in 1560 and wrote his famous Apologia Ecclesiae Anglicanae two years later. The most recent monographs on Jewel, now over forty years old, focus largely on his theology, casting him as deft scholar, adept humanist, precursor to Hooker, arbiter of Anglican identity and seminal mind in the formation of Anglicanism. Yet in light of modern research it is clear that much of this does not stand up to closer examination. In this work, Gary Jenkins argues that, far from serving as the constructor of a positive Anglican identity, Jewel's real contribution pertains to the genesis of its divided and schizophrenic nature. Drawing on a variety of sources and scholarship, he paints a picture not of a theologian and humanist, but an orator and rhetorician, who persistently breached the rules of logic and the canons of Renaissance humanism in an effort to claim polemical victory over his traditionalist opponents such as Thomas Harding.By taking such an iconoclastic approach to Jewel, this work not only offers a radical reinterpretation of the man, but of the Church he did so much to shape. It provides a vivid insight into the intent and ends of Jewel with respect to what he saw the Church of England under the Elizabethan settlement to be, as well as into the unintended consequences of his work. In so doing, it demonstrates how he used his Patristic sources, often uncritically and faultily, as foils against his theological interlocutors, and without the least intention of creating a coherent theological system. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A very harsh assessment of Jewel and the "via media"
The author seems determined to destroy the notion that the Elizabethan settlement produced a "via media" that ultimately became known as Anglicanism. Since Jewel was the Church of England's most well known apologist he has been subjected to scathing scrutiny in this work.

"When using Erastianism as a prism, Jewel's lack of theologically precise doctrinal formulations becomes not some complex via media between Rome and Geneva, but a means whereby a political necessity was wedded to an ecclesiastical virtue. Jewel's works do not present a body of theological literature abundant with insight, but instead give a pedestrian reading of scriptural texts, a prosaic use of the early church, and a banal approach to its theological topics. Jewel's use of sources is often disingenuous, his logic faulty and his theology in several areas flawed. What Jewel really gives the student of the Reformation is an iconoclast in a prelate's vestments."

I have only read Jewel's "Apology of the Church of England," but I find the author's scathing critique of Jewel to be severe. Jewel did not have a first rate mind, but then again, neither did many of his opponents. The author has too much of an axe to grind in light of earlier biographies that herald Jewel as the champion of the celebrated English "middle way." Thus the author sets out to destroy the very notion of a via media and Jewel is part of the wreckage. ... Read more
