4-0 out of 5 stars Take the book for what it is...
Ill start with I read this book because I have a interest in turn of the century-depression era law enforcement, that I have heard of the legend of CPT. Hamer, and have enormous respect for him. This is the only book I have found dedicated to his career. If only a quarter of the book is true, Ranger Hamer must have been a brave, skilled, and most importantly, smart lawman.
That being said, the book does lead to a bit of "larger than life" description of his exploits. I wouldnt go as far as to use Mr. Sprunks assessment of "hero worship", but a liberal dose of added drama seems to be a better term, to me. I dont doubt that the incidents occurred, and its obvious who won, but the writer does tend to almost glamorizing the engagements. I doubt CPT. Hamer enjoyed or relished the incidents. I would think he, as the true professional he was, did what needed to be done in a manner consistant with his era. He used the force necessary to accomplish the task at hand. I dont feel todays standards of use of force issues can be applied to the times in question. Judging from some of the photos of the stacks of dead Mexican bootleggers, I dont doubt CPT Hamer had to use surprise, stealth and superior firepower just to survive. I defy anyone, in the same set of circumstances, not to use the same tactics...and not just survive, but win. Lets see anyone else face down 30 plus armed, violent criminals, intent only on their goal, with only a handful of men and get them to just surrender. Add in being miles from any friendly assests, medical aid, communications, transport/detention facilities, etc., in an unforgiving, hostile climate. More power to you if you do.
I will never understand the obsession our society has with Bonnie and Clyde, but who am I to say? Suffice to say, they were psychotic, cold blooded murderers who dont deserve the underground following they have. What I can say is the right man was picked for the job to take them out. Standard attempts to take them into custody failed, with dead law enforcement officers in the wake. They were dumped exactly as the deserved. Too bad for their victims it didnt happen sooner. The saddest part is if the same situation happened today, the officers would probably be prosecuted themselves. Maybe thats one of the problems this country has today in dealing with violent, degenerate killers.
In an era where every public figures dirty laundry, failings and shortcomings are daily news, we may mistake that this is just another attempt to make a hero out of someone who didnt deserve it. This book was written in a time where writers went out of their way to make a hero. I dont feel CPT. Hamers story needs any assistance in telling of his heroic career, but look at almost any other like bio of the times. I feel he was a brave and honest man, a hell of a lawman and a true hero. I think the book is more of a sign of the times it was written in. Did it all happen just like this? Doubtfull, but is everything written about Daniel Boone, George Washington, and other great American heroes always 100% accurate? Enjoy a great read, and a probably fairly accurate story. Just take it with a small grain of salt.

2-0 out of 5 stars Frankly Silly (Frankly Lamer Revisited)
I don't believe I've ever seen anybody read so much that simply is not there into such a small amount of text. I'm referring to some of the responses to my "Frankly Lamer" review that makes a few negative observations about the accuracy of the book with regard to Bonnie and Clyde (B&C). For my brief comments I am accused of being amongst the "misguided worshippers of Bonnie and Clyde" and of attacking Frank Hamer himself. What nonsense. Read my VERY brief comments yourself. You'll see that some of these reviewers could read into my review that I support worldwide communist domination. For example, the June 24th 2000 reviewer stated that I said B&C deserve respect. Where did that come from? Got me.

Let me make a few points clear as air to some of my less-than-friendly fellow reviewers:

1) Before attacking someone's opinion and character, ensure that you are indeed attacking his or her opinion and not something you concocted.

2) Read my review of the movie "Bonnie and Clyde" for a better feel on my opinion on B&C. You'll find it somewhat different than your assumptions.

3) Critiquing a book is not the same as attacking the subject of a book. Do I REALLY need to elaborate on this? True, all histories have errors. It's equally true that each and every one of those errors taints the authority of a book. This book had a few too many for my taste. I found myself questioning the authors in non-B&C sections because ofB&C errors.

4) Frank did America a lot of great services, including whacking B&C. However, he is not a god -- brave and fascinating but not a god. Hero worship is for children. By the way, I suspect ambushing booze runners without trying to apprehend them first (if that indeed happened) takes one out of the "great" category. Prohibition was highly controversial at the time and hardly warranted denying someone, even a Mexican, due process or his life. However, if he starts shooting first, kill 'em.

5) As an important part of America's great history, Frank deserves a history with a little more quality control.

In short, I stand by my original review with the exception that I should have stated that Bonnie was "most likely" not at the Grapevine killing, rather than stating my opinion as fact. I can't wait to see what some folks read into this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on a Great Man
This is an excellent biography of one of the greatest lawmen in U.S. history. I've heard a lot of rants from misguided Bonnie and Clyde fans about the book's alleged inaccuracies. Well, there hasn't been a book on Bonnie and Clyde or Depression outlaws published to date (including my own!) that hasn't had some drastic errors in it, one reason being that most of the books, including I'm Frank Hamer, draw heavily from the Fugitives, the ghosted 1934 memoirs of Bonnie's mother and Clyde's sister. I'm not one of these people who presume to know who killed the two highway patrolmen at Grapevine. It may have been Henry Methvin, Clyde Barrow, Bonnie Parker, or all three for that matter (ballistics evidence indicated three guns were fired). Nor am I one of those misguided worshippers of Bonnie and Clyde, who were really nothing more than a pair of two-bit, scatter-brained, trigger-happy psychos. But all that is neither here nor there, as this is not simply a "Bonnie & Clyde book." This is a biography, and a damn good one, of the man who tracked them down--Frank Hamer, who captured or killed dozens of other criminals and carried with him the scars, and much of the lead, from many gunfights with maggots of the Clyde Barrow sort. Hamer came out of retirement to run down the Barrow gang. The ambush of Clyde and Bonnie was the perfect closing of Hamer's career and a great service to America as well. It was the job he was made to do and one that had to be done. Forget Hollywood. The real Bonnie and Clyde were murderous criminals who deserved just what they got. And Frank Hamer was just the man to give it to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Frank Hamer : The Life of a Texas Peace Officer
It has been many years since I first read this book and I found it very informative.I am sure there are bound to be some errors but on the most part it is historically accurate. It is not only about ending Bonnie andClyde's murderous spree but about the man that did it and how he became aTexas Police Officer and came up through the ranks to become one of thegreatest Texas Rangers who ever lived. The review written byanomie@mail.com, is total bull written buy someone who evidently prefers tobelieve the glamorized version of the Bonnie & Clyde movie.I havebeen a Texas State Police officer for 23 years and have read some of theactual reports of Bonnie and Clydes exploits and to contradictanomie@mail.com, Bonnie and Clyde deserve norespect as stated by anomie. Anomie needs to be better informed of the facts before making reviews. Sorry for the rant but I hate for anyone to bad mouth a great man and takeup for a couple of cold blooded illiterate killers who were glamorized byHollywood as a cute loving couple out for a Sunday drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars HAMER, STRAIGHT SHOOTIN STORY.

Product Description
This is an expanded and revised edition of Orde Levinson's definitive catalogue raisonne of the prints of John Piper: an essential reference book for collectors, curators, prints specialists and art historians, and an invaluable visual resource for all those with an interest in Piper's prolific and varied printmaking output. John Piper (1903-92) was one of the most versatile and interesting British artists of the twentieth century and was at the cutting edge of many elements of the British art scene. Although best known for his paintings, Piper has achieved the highest respect for his works in stained glass and ceramics, his stage, set and costume designs, art-critical writings, and his large corpus of prints. The prints are innovative, lively and continuously challenge the medium.First published in 1987, and reissued with a complete prints catalogue in 1996 following Piper's death, the book has been thoroughly updated for this new edition, incorporating a new essay by David Fraser Jenkins on Piper's extraordinary experimental prints of the mid-1960s; a new Introduction by Orde Levinson; an up-to-date Bibliography and expanded lists of Designs, Exhibitions, Illustrations and Public Collections; unseen archival photographs; and a completely updated page-design, as well as the standard indexes of prints, portfolios, printers and publishers, and incorrect titles. All catalogued prints are illustrated (with all colour works reproduced in colour), and the corpus of prints includes etchings, aquatints, wood engravings, lithographs and screenprints. The reference material is now certainly the most comprehensive ever compiled on Piper, and allows the reader to survey the development of his artistic concerns, interests and work.'A compendium of great usefulness, and an important building block in the structuring of John's reputation' (Frances Spalding, 2009)'Orde's editing has been meticulous in execution and inexhaustable in research. It is, however, not only a work of scholarship but one of enthusiasm and love' (Myfanwy Piper, 1996) ... Did the ancient Mayans predict that the "world will end" in 2012 . . . or is that a modern misinterpretation of their true message? Respected author and researcher John Major Jenkins goes to the source--the original Mayan calendar found in the city of Izapa--to find the surprising answers. On Unlocking the Secrets of 2012, listeners will learn how the Mayan mystics based their myths and prophecies on a deep understanding of cycles--their beginnings, their endings, and how the impending cycle ending impacts our lives. According to Jenkins, the Mayan legacy offers the following teachings to help us understand 2012:* What is the Galactic Alignment? The astronomical phenomenon predicted by the Mayans, and how it will affect us* Izapa as the origin place of the 2012 calendar and the "uncorrupted vision" of the early Mayan skywatchers* Living at the end of a cycle--practices drawn from Mayan spirituality that we can apply in our everyday lives* Beyond 2012: transforming our consciousness so we can create and nurture a better world, and moreIn the growing interest surrounding the year 2012, John Major Jenkins has emerged as the most knowledgeable and trusted expert on ancient Mayan culture and its beliefs. 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Stuff!!!
If you've read any of his other books - this is a great enhancement for all of it.

Much of his work are in these CD's - but - there are 3 other things he touches base on here that isn't spoken of in his books.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Clueless attempted promo for his other books
The fascinating aspect of ancient Mayan astronomical observation creating a universal calendar dating from their time through the modern year 2012 is obviously grist for speculation as that date (and the end of their anciently calculated time (or at least an era) approaches. John Major Jenkins, according to the package notes, is the author of five previous books including "Maya Cosmogenesis 2012" and "Galactic Alignment" (an event with practical effects Jenkins gives no clue to but which astronomers with modern instruments apparently actually predict for 2012) but has no obvious other qualifications other than (apparently) traveling a lot in non-degree-persueing activities. He is clearly trying to capitalize on this fascination, but does so very badly indeed. In over two decades of wide ranging audio-book listening, these three discs covering three and a half hours of tedium are by far the most useless, uninteresting set of discs or tapes I have wasted time and money on. Jenkins gives precious little practical information and unlocks no "secrets." Instead, he repeats about 15 minutes worth of Mayan "creation" myths (without ever getting to the *creation* part) over two to three hours, plugs previous books with the implication THEY explain what this book promised to, and having run out of material, falls back on trite breathing relaxation exercises (tarting them up with references to supposed Mayan "shaman traditions"). When purchasing the book, I thought the publisher's name, "Sounds True" was clever - unfortunately, after listening to this sad exploitation piece, I'm inclined to re-read it as "ONLY *sounds* true," and would be very skeptical about trying another of their other releases. Not a good listen (Jenkins doesn't even READ well - lots of curious pauses). Sad. I usually pass audio books I'm done with on to friends or the local library - this one just goes in the trash.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional document of an exceptional museum.
I grew up around museum people, and had my first professional experiences in radio. I love museums, and I am fascinated with the history of technology so I particularly love museums of technologies like the Victoria and Albert in London, and the old Smithsonian Museum of History and Technology (renamed the Museum of American History) in Washington DC.
This weekend I had a few hours to kill in Bellingham, Washington and recalled that there was an old Theremin (an early electronic musical instrument) in a local museum.I play a modern reconstruction of one, so I thought I'd look it up.The museum was called the American Museum of Radio and Electricity, and was open on weekends, so I dropped by. I was totally taken by surprise that this small college town actually houses the best collection of early electronic experimental devices, phonographs, radios, and unusual devices of all sorts that I have ever seen. All well maintained, restored, and displayed in a excellent modern museum. The collection is a showcase not only of technology, but of industrial design spanning 200 years.Beautiful, inspiring, and fascinating.
Since I only had an hour to enjoy the museum, I purchased this book (which is based on the collection) to fill in the gaps.Again, I was surprised when I started to read at the hotel that night - not only are the photographs excellent, but the text is an entertaining, detailed history of early electrical technology and early radio, with many stories and technologies that I've never come across before.
It was so entertaining that the friends I was traveling with read it aloud all the way home to Seattle. The excellent photos make the stories come alive. This is going to be a favorite book on my coffee table for quite a while!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Museum Book
This book is a tour in photographs of the American Museum of Radio & Electricity, located in Bellingham Washington.
In a way, it is a history, but the narrative is very brief. The photography is first-class, and covers the subject pretty well.Obviously, there are things that are an important part of Radio / Electrical history, but for which there are no museum specimens.Nor is this primarily a book of period photos.Nonetheless, I believe that it is a must-have for anyone with an interest in old Radio / Electricity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A work of impressive historical scholarship
Superbly illustrated with more than six hundred historical photographs of electrical apparatus that begins with discoveries of the 17th Century upon which was based the subsequent invention of electric motors, electric lights, the telegraph, the telephone, and the invention that created a true electricity-based mass culture, the radio, "Where Discovery Sparks Imagination" by John D. Jenkins (Board President of the American Museum of Radio and Electricity) is an informed and informative 224-page compendium that is a fascinating survey of the ingenuity and artistry that went into these developing technologies from their inception onwards. A work of impressive historical scholarship reinforced with pictorial images of machines, gadgets, appliances, and even toys, "Where Discovery Sparks Imagination" is a brilliant presentation, a unique history, and a welcome addition to personal, academic, and community library collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for anyone interested in radio and electricity
John Jenkins has created a visual and descriptive masterpiece with his most recent book. The photographs of historiclly important technology treasures from the Museum of Radio and Electricity in Bellingham, WA are unsurpassed in showing every detail of technological development from the beginning of the age of electricity. My favorite parts are those that relate the beginning of the wireless radio age.If you are an amateur radio operator I think you would enjoy this book immensely, I know that I have. And if you happen to be enamored with the age of vaccuum tube technology you will enjoy the stunning photographs and descriptions of the Al Jones tube collection. You can't buy much of any lasting value these days for $30....this book is a rare and worthwhile exception.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for collectors of anything electrical
I'm not into reviewing. I've bought many books from Amazon over the years, ranging from worthy-of-a-book-award down to boring. But this is the first time I feel like writing a review. This book is a must for any collector of anything electrical. It is spectacular in every respect. A readable balance of clear but authoritative text and a huge number of magnificent photographs, most in color, of real antique electrical items, many of them very rare, on heavy glossy paper. The main sections are:

The Dawn of the Electrical Age: Very early artifacts of electricity and magnetism.
Electricity Sparks Invention: From Galvani in 1780 to Faraday in 1831 to Morse in 1837 to Alexander Graham Bell in 1875 to Edison and Tesla in the eighteen-seventies and beyond, with great heavily illustrated sections on incendescent lighting, electric motors, electrical measuring instruments, the telegraph, the telephone, and even many electro-therapeutic quackery devices such as the electro-magnetic hairbrush and the bi-polar electric belt with suspensory pouch (I presume for men).
The Wireless Age: Again heavily illustrated, with sections on the electromagnetic spectrum, the discovery of radio waves, early detection of radio waves, Marconi and his many early wireless devices, vacuum tubes, and early radio including military radio in World War One.
Radio Enters the Home: With a huge number of illustrations of radios from the 1920s and 1930s.
The Golden Age of Radio: With an equally huge number of illustrations of radios from the 1930s and 1940s.
The Jones Gallery: About vacuum tubes, ranging from early ones to the one used on the Lunar Orbiter III to photograph the dark side of the moon in 1968.

All profits go to the American Museum of Radio and Electricity, a non-profit organization. I hope I've convinced you to click on the "ADD TO CART" button and then the "PLACE YOUR ORDER" button.

Full disclosure: I'm an avid collector of some items of early incandescent lighting and original documentation about them, and I like to think that I'm somewhat of a historian of some aspects of very early electric incandescent lighting. In that connection, I've corresponded with the author on occasion and we have exchanged some information, but I have no involvement with the American Museum of Radio and Electricity or any other organization of the author. ... Product Description
Recent years have witnessed a change from the passive, low key use of rural areas for recreation to the explosion of tourism as a highly active and dominant agent of change and control in the countryside and associated rural communities. This book considers the effects of rural recreation and tourism with special reference to:

  • the economics of rural restructuring
  • public sector rural policies
  • imaging and reimaging
  • the social dynamics of rural change
  • sustainability of tourism and recreation in rural areas
Contemporary reflections of each of these issues are brought together by Richard Butler, C. Michael Hall and John Jenkins from experts in Australasia, North America and Europe. The book provides a critical evaluation of the enthusiasm and promotion given to this growth industry by government and private bodies, and examines opportunities and challenges associated with the development and management of tourism in a rural environment. ... Product Description
An American boy, son of Presbyterian missionaries, was born in Shanghai early in this century. The boy lived two lives, one within the pious church compound, the other along the canal and in the alleys of a traditional Chinese city. There he faced the alley brats' Lady Bandit, heard the shrill screams of a child's foot-binding, learned rank obscenities from passing boatmen, and, while still in short pants, chewed Sen-Sen and ogled snake-charmers in the old Native City. He sailed up the Yangtze to attend boarding school, and along with his Boy Scout patrol, met Chiang Kai-shek. And when John Espey grew up, he wrote about his years in China. This memoir is the story of those years, and while it is a wry, affectionate account, it also conveys an often overlooked picture of China in the years before communism. Seen through the eyes of a child, the interplay of religion, commerce, and American colonialism that took place during this period is revealed more tellinglyand more lightheartedlythan in many an analysis by an "old China hand."Espey's bent is to use a "Chinese" approach to his subject, that is, to hide a second meaning within his words, to speak in parables. This he learned from both his single-minded missionary father and the family's Chinese cook. The result is that the reader of Minor Heresies, Major Departures will learn a great deal about the Pacific Rim while having a rollicking good time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars delightful, tongue in cheek memoir
Minor Heresies, Major Departures is best summarized by Robertson Davies' back cover quote describing how Espymakes "high comedy about Presbyterian missionaries without any way jeering at their sense of dedication."These episodes from his childhood are a delight to read. He combines the truth of a child's eyes with the sarcasm of an adult as he describes events such as the battle with his sister for the longest prayer or his failure at "cementing the international bonds of love and law" during play with the cook's nephew.

This book is recommended not just to those interested in missionary work, but to anyone who enjoys travel or cross-cultural memoirs. If you are looking for aninspirational tale of missionary good deeds, however, it might not be your cup of tea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle humor, fine craftsmanship, sentimental and perceptive
John Espey's memoirs of his Shanghai boyhood are a finely done portrait ofa moment in history. He expresses, with a wry humor, his "view ofthings" as a child, a view which contrasts with those of the adultsaround him.His disagreement with the Western perspective and Protestantmissionary outlook that formed the backdrop to his life in Shanghai beforeWW II is recorded in civil tones; he gives people credit for goodintentions and does not denigrate their sometimes misguided efforts.Espey's memories are a delightful entry into cross-cultural psychology--byone who knows what that term really means. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I agree with the other guy!
I had to bought this book for a class I'm attending. I first read the preview available for this book and I was kind of nervous to buy this book but I had no choice, it was necessary. The only thing I want to say is that book should not be consulted except if it is really necessary... There is virtually no links between the parts of chapters and even between the chapters. You never know what the author is trying to explain. The information is always partial, there is plenty of references to paliated this lack of usefull information. Nevertheless, I think that it is not to complicated to understand. This is mainly why I have deceided to give it 2 stars. I strongly not recommend this book to anyone: students, teachers and professionnals. There must be many better book out there! In fact, I don't think that any book can be worst. I haven't read all the book yet but I'm pretty sure that the last chapters won't be more exciting than the first half.

1-0 out of 5 stars Holy cow! Over-rated!
This book was horrible. It was either too complex, or much too simplistic. There was no measure of explanation on the connections between the various subjects, and no tying in of the various concepts 'learned'... This was bad... DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! ... Read more
