Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry) is the lone work of high masterpiece-quality created by Mascagni who died forgotten and alone during the last year of WWII. In his music he characterized perfectly the conflicting extremes of Sicilian culture.Mascagni's Cavalleria preceded Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci by two years and he is credited with initiating the verismo style opera that delighted audiences bored with the stilted and unrealistic traditional forms to which they had become accustomed.
