The organ works
The chapter on the organ works of Felix Mendelssohn is probably the finest article in print on the subject. Every organist interested in a serious study of the organ sonatas of Mendelssohn needs to read this article. It gives a brief history of why organ music went into decline after J.S. Bach, and how Mendelssohn's organ sonatas are unique products of the early 19th century organ literature.

Composer Felix Mendelssohn's reputation fluctuates wildlyaccording to the musical fashions of the moment. Some critics havefound it convenient to overlook Mendelssohn's immense talents, falselydismissing his music as sentimental, shallow, or overly Romantic. Butthese judgments, which have their origins in the endemic anti-Semitismof the mid-19th century, just don't hold up upon careful study ofworks like his Symphony No. 4, the "Italian." This is music that isthoughtfully conceived and deeply meaningful. Actually, Mendelssohnwrote 13 symphonies as a juvenile before tackling the form as anadult, but only the later works were counted when the numbers werebeing handed out. The "Italian" was written after a tour of Italy,and, like the "Scottish" Symphony, it is highly evocative of thecountry and culture it describes.

Mendelssohn's compositional technique is worth studying, and thispocket-sized score from Dover Publications is a useful tool. Sized tobe totable for concerts, and with wide margins for scribbling notes,this little score still offers the entire orchestration.
