...http://booksllc.net/?l=fr ... Read more

Product Description
Written for the NMC Songbook, this homage to Francis Poulenc rejoices in the bitter sweet harmony that he used to relish. Of a romantic, wistful nature, the words are concocted by Berkeley and also have a slightly French, Apollinaire-like sensibility with a deliberate use of elliptical contradiction: 'I hear your silent voice' etc. An indulgent gem for any good soprano. ... Excerpt: Francis Poulenc's Sonata for clarinet and piano dates from 1962 and is one of the last pieces he completed. The piece is dedicated to the memory of an old friend, the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger, who like Poulenc had belonged to the group of "Les Six." A typical performance takes about 13 minutes. The sonata is in three movements: 1. Allegro tristamente (Allegretto - Très calme - Tempo allegretto)2. Romanza (Très calme)3. Allegro con fuoco (Très animé)The structure differs somewhat from the fast-slow-fast pattern of a traditional sonata in that the first movement is itself split into three sections in the pattern fast-slow-fast. It bears the somewhat paradoxical subtitle "Allegro tristamente": accordingly, the piece is always in motion, but proceeds with a sense of grieving. After a brief fortissimo introduction consisting of angry spurts of figuration in the clarinet punctuated by piano chords, the piano quiets to a murmur. The clarinet's lines are built of a self-perpetuating series of arcs that leave a shape but not a tune in our ears. At one point the clarinet seems stuck in a motivic rut, sadly leaping up and down between octave B tones over a shifting harmonic background. As the movement ends, the lingering memory is a fuzzy one of melancholy gestures and moods. The second movement, "Romanza," is both clearer in its melodic makeup and more cathartic, perhaps, in its emotional expression. The clarinet melody is simple and somber throughout, but is elaborately embroidered in a few places, ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=656536 ... Read more

Excerpt: Les mamelles de Tirésias (1947)Dialogues of the Carmelites (1957)La voix humaine (1959) Dialogues of the Carmelites (in French, Dialogues des carmélites), is an opera in two acts by Francis Poulenc. In 1953, M. Valcarenghi approached Poulenc to commission a ballet for La Scala in Milan; when Poulenc found the proposed subject uninspiring, Valcarenghi suggested instead a screenplay by Georges Bernanos, based on the novella, Die Letzte am Schafott (The Last on the Scaffold), by Gertrud von Le Fort. Von Le Fort's story was based, in turn, on historical events which took place at a monastery of Carmelite nuns in Compiègne during the French Revolution (see Martyrs of Compiegne). Some sources credit Emmet Lavery as librettist or co-librettist, but others only say, "With the permission of Emmet Lavery." The libretto is unusually deep in its psychological study of the contrasting characters of Mère Marie de l'Incarnation and Blanche de la Force. Dialogues contributes to Poulenc's reputation as a composer especially of fine vocal music. The dialogues are largely set in recitative, with a melodic line that closely follows the text. The harmonies are lush, with the occasional wrenching twists that are characteristic of Poulenc's style. Poulenc's deep religious feelings are particularly evident in the gorgeous a cappella setting of Ave Maria in Act II, Scene II, and the Ave verum corpus in Act II, Scene IV. During the final tableau of the opera, which takes place in the Place de la Révolution, the distinct sound of the guillotine's descending blade is heard repeatedly over the orchestra and the singing of the nuns. The opera was first performe...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1253275 ... Read more
