Excerpt:Vladimir Horowitz (1903 - 1989) Georges Bizet (1838 - 1875) Variations on a Theme from Carmen are a set of variations composed and performed by the Russian pianist Vladimir Horowitz , they are based on a gypsy dance from Georges Bizet 's opera Carmen . Background Of Horowitz's many transcriptions, the Carmen Variations were the only one to remain in his repertoire throughout his career. He played them from his earliest concerts in the 1920s, where he often wowed his audience with the "show stopping" encore , through to his golden jubilee season in 1978, over fifty years later. The main theme of the piece originates from the energetic gypsy dance from Act II of Bizet's opera Carmen , a theme that has been used by many for various other variations and transcriptions, including Moszkowski 's Chanson Bohème de l'Opéra Carmen . Although Horowitz had no desire to see the piece published, he performed it in many concerts and showed it to a couple of friends and acquaintances. He even made a piano roll of the piece, but always kept the score to himself. Horowitz's audiences loved the Carmen Variations and he was often compelled to perform them everywhere. Excerpt: Romeo and Juliet (Op. 64) (Russian: ) is a ballet by Sergei Prokofiev based on William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. It is one of the most enduringly popular ballets. Music from the ballet was extracted by Prokofiev as three suites for orchestra and as a piano work. Based on a synopsis created by Adrian Piotrovsky (who first suggested the subject to Prokofiev) and Sergey Radlov, the ballet in its original form was completed by Prokofiev in September 1935, on commission by the Kirov Ballet. The original version had a "happy" ending, but was never publicly mounted, partly due to increased fear and caution in the musical and theatrical community in the aftermath of the two notorious Pravda editorials criticising Shostakovich and other "degenerate modernists". Suites of the ballet music were heard in Moscow and the United States, but the full ballet premiered in Brno, Czechoslovakia, on 30 December 1938. It is better known today from the significantly revised version that was first presented at the Kirov in Leningrad on 11 January 1940, with choreography by Leonid Lavrovsky. In 1962 John Cranko's choreography of Romeo and Juliet for the Stuttgart Ballet helped the company achieve a worldwide reputation. It had its American premiere in 1969. Prokofiev was born in Sontsovka (now Krasne in Donetsk oblast, Ukraine), an isolated rural estate in Yekaterinoslav Governorate, Russian Empire. He displayed unusual musical abilities by the age of five. His first piano composition to be written down (by his mother), an 'Indian Gallop', was in the Lydian mode (F major with a B natural instead of B flat) as the young Prokofiev felt 'reluctance to tackle the black notes'. By the age of seven he had also learned to play chess.
