Product Description
The melodies of Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) span the entire chronology of his creative output, from his earliest song, written during his student years, to the cycle Don Quichotte a Dulcinee, his last composition in any genre. Ravel's vocal melodies are elegant and refined, classical in their phrase structure, with meticulous attention to detail. The diverse musical influences on his song style range from French Baroque music, to his teacher Gabriel Faure, to Arnold Schoenberg. This is the first comprehensive collection of Ravel songs ever published. There are 50 songs in the High Voice volume, and 49 songs in the Medium/Low Voice volume. The collection also includes excerpts from the opera L'Enfant et les Sortileges. ... Read more

Masterpiece of lush and brilliant orchestration is a work of considerable emotional depth in which the initial series of elegant waltzes are transformed into what Ravel describes as "a fantastic, fatal whirling" leading to a powerful, turbulent climax. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a Wonderful piece
I just received the score today and I'm already in love with it.What a wonderful piece!

The writing is exquisite and the print is very easy to read. The score itself is durable and, with a little pressing, lies flat on a table or music stand. It's the largest size available (which is what I prefer) and, most importantly to the starving music student, it's cheap!

A must for musicians and concert-goers alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exalted Orchestration of Ravel's Characteristic Melodic Structures Revealed
The Cambridge Companion to Ravel (Cambridge Companions to Music)[[ASIN:B0002TKFHW

and

Daphnis et Chloe [Hybrid SACD]]] Boston Symphony, Charles Munch

The Cambrridge Companion to Ravel is a book intended for the early scholar becoming familiar with the composer's works; it is also an aide for the advanced, and for the totally immersed to refresh insight and review technicalities of works that one is hearing again. It is a much needed step by step accompaniement and appendix for Ravel's highly annotated musical scores, all of which are highly detailed within so the artist is completely sure of his interpretation within the rigidly confined and narrow limnits as Ravel wrote them. These restrictions, tempos observed, would rein in overly emoting renditions, eliminating any temptations to go beyond the intellectual crispness, reserving a dryness necessary to remove the the risk of sentimentality to these compositions. While described as 'impressionist', Ravel's compositions are in direct contrast to Debussy. While both achieve great colorism, Ravel'sstrophic structure is as classically inspired as an Ionic Column, whereas Debussy's form is openly astrophic and doesn't follow classic models at all.

With this reveiw of The Cambridge Companion to Ravel, I've offered an accompanying and my most highly recommended recording of his penultimate composition Daphnis and Chloe.Without question the composer's most sumptuous score, encompassing the classical tale by Longus, his interpretation is in the gilded and light-filled style of Versailles, of The Hall of Mirrors, reflecting his own vision of it French Style rather than Grecian. In musical history, were he alive today, Ravel would quickly analyze its style as a tapestry of a processional in Grand Moderne Style of perhaps Jean Dupas of the period. It is vast musical frescoe or painted mural of Grecian figures imagined as Watteau or Fragonard paintings, not those of rustic pastoral Greece.

The book is enjoyable while listening to a composition and hear the book's meanings and justification. I offer here a CD from 1956, Daphnis and Chloe, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Charles Munch conducting, with The New England Conservatory of Music Chorus under the baton of Robert Shaw. The author's view is that this performance remains the finest recording of this difficult score. It is a vast musical frescoe or mosaic, the most opulent picture of a classical mise en scene. It's opulence has been achieved with the greatest of detail, including distant castenets, claves and the smallest inuendos written clearly in the score.

I highly recommend this outstanding Orchestra Music Companion to any new Ravel enthusiast, or the accomplished scholar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good value, good product
This has some great music in it for a really low price.I definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great collection for the price!!!
For the serious pianist who wants a compilation of a wide range of Ravel's work, this is a sweet purchase. Not for the beginning pianist--some of the pieces are quite formidable, but certainly contains approachable pieces as well.

Beverly JuanPiano Masterpieces of Maurice Ravel

4-0 out of 5 stars Great deal for starters
I purchased this book used several years ago, and it's still in great condition with only minimal wear.It contains over half of Ravel's piano solo pieces, including the infamous Miroirs and Gaspard de la nuit.If you are at all interested in Ravel, I would highly suggest purchasing this collection.

However, with that said, this is not the best source available if you are a serious Ravel performer. There are many errors, though not serious (one exception is in Ondine however, where a pattern is incorrect in the RH at the beginning) and the music can be cramped and difficult to read at times. If you really want to study this music well, I would suggest purchasing Nancy Bricard's editions from Alfred.Especially useful are her editions of Miroirs and Gaspard de la nuit.I must disagree with Mr. Meyer below and point out that it is helpful to see what errors were where in the score, so that way a performer is more likely to believe and understand the importance of the error. The music in Bricard's editions is typeset beautifully, and she gives a lot of insight in the pieces and many helpful performance suggestions - especially fingerings.

5-0 out of 5 stars cheap and good
I give this book 5 stars because it is the cheapest way to own the best editions of Ravel's greatest masterpieces for piano. The last reviewer is correct in stating that these are reprints of the original french editions, but those editions remain the best since there currently exists no critical or scholarly editions of ravel's piano works. The Dover edition even corrects some errors that existed in the original editions. The last reiviewer likes Nancy Bricard's editions (and other editions published by Alfred edited by Maurice Hinson) but I think Nancy Bricard got a little too happy when she got access to Ravel's manuscript, and purposefully included obvious errors into the score, including a footnote explaining that it's an error, instead of just correcting it.Alfred can hardly be trusted for scholarly editing, so for now, this edition remains the best buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Affordable, but flawed.
This is indeed a very good publication of some very important works by Ravel.Certainly the price alone justifies the purchase, considering Durand editions are still nearly 50% or higher in price. The edition does however, through no fault of Dover because it is a reprint, present some notational flaws that have not been corrected.Nancy Bricard has published a much more authoritative and instructive edition for Alfred Masterworks, for instance of Gaspard de la Nuit.Correcting many of the most obvious of errors. The Dover edition is still reliable, but one must warn that a proper performance dictates cross-reference with other editions. ... Product Description
From the "Pavane pour une Infante defunte" to "Bolero", much of the music of Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is among the most accessible of any written during the last 100 years. The man himself, on the other hand, was notoriously difficult to get to know, partly because of his natural modesty and inherent reserve, but partly also because there were aspects of his character which he preferred to conceal even from his closest friends. It is Gerlad Larner's aim in this biography to trace the development of the composer's personality not only through events in his life and in the society around him, but also through his music, which is more revealing in this respect than is generally believed. Ravel tended to reveal most of himself at times of crisis, such as the outbreak of World War I in 1914 and the death of the mother he worshipped in 1917."Adversity", the chapter devoted to those years, is a central feature in a book which begins by evaluating the importance of Ravel's mixed Basque and Swiss heredity and which then pursues the first part of his life through his childhood in Bohemian Montmatre, his controversial activities as a student at the Paris Conservatoire, and the establishment of his career as a composer fascinatingly interlinked with that of his older contemporary Claude Debussy. A moving description of his war service as a truck driver is followed by an account of the slow recovery from the failure in his health and morale after the death of his mother, the period of conflict and reconciliation with the new post-war movement represented by Erik Satie and Les Six, and a last decade of international celebrity which coincided with the gradual onset of illness which silenced him for four years before his death in 1937. This text is part of the 20th-century composers series, examining composers in a biographical context, and offering a comprehensive study of key figures in the creation of 20th-century music. None of the books in the series presume a knowledge of specialized terms or musical notation. Each book in the series features a list of works, a bibliography, and a discography.Amazon.com Review
He is remembered in the United States primarily for the ratherbanal repetitions of Bolero, but Maurice Ravel wrote a greatdeal of music more worthy of celebration: ballets like Ma Merel'Oye (Mother Goose) and Daphnis et Chloe; orchestral andpiano works like Pavane pour une Infante Defunte (Pavane for aDead Princess) and the Rapsodie Espagnole; operas likeL'Enfant et les Sortileges (The Child and the Enchantments);and settings of Greek and Jewish songs. British author and criticGerald Larner offers a well-researched, well-written, accessiblebiography of Ravel's life and compositions that explores his music andhis motivations, a part of the Phaidon Press Limited 20th CenturyComposers series. ... Product Description
Maurice Ravel, as composer and scenario writer, collaborated with some of the greatest ballet directors, choreographers, designers and dancers of his time, including Diaghilev, Ida Rubinstein, Benois and Nijinsky. In this book, the first study dedicated to Ravel's ballets, Deborah Mawer explores these relationships and argues that ballet music should not be regarded in isolation. Indeed, Ravel's views on ballet and other stage works privilege a synthesized aesthetic. The first chapter establishes a historical and critical context for Ravel's scores, engaging en route with multimedia theory. Six main ballets from "Daphnis et Chloe" through to "Bolero" are considered holistically alongside themes such as childhood fantasy, waltzing and neoclassicism. Each work is examined in terms of its evolution, premiere, critical reception and selected reinterpretation through to the present; new findings result from primary-source research, undertaken especially in Paris. The final chapter discusses the reasons for Ravel's collaborations and the strengths and weaknesses of his interpersonal relations.Mawer emphasizes the importance of the performative dimension in realizing Ravel's achievement, and proposes that the composer's large-scale oeuvre can, in a sense, be viewed as a balletic undertaking. In so doing, this book adds significantly to current research interest in artistic production and interplay in early twentieth-century Paris. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars lots of new information about Ravel
As the dean of Ravel studies, Professor Arbie Orenstein, states on the book cover, this book offers lots of new research and insights into the very famous composer of "Bolero" and other works. This volume is an essential companion to Prof. Orenstein's own works. It offers lots of previous unpublished items and facts about Ravel's creative milieu, in addition to the most plausible explanation of the relation between Ravel's life and music.

3-0 out of 5 stars good book, faulty premise
This book seems well researched and offers some new insight into the life of Maurice Ravel. However, the main premise of this book is the assertion that Ravel was homosexual. It is true that little is known about Ravel's personal life and it is also true that many fine biographies have been written about Ravel without delving into this subject. The problem is that Mr. Ivryoffers little, in my opinion, to substantiate the claim. Still, this book offers much to Ravel fans. Besides, it really doesn't matter what Ravel's sexual preferance was. Mr. Ivry presents some interesting angles on Ravel's creative output. Though I have read at least 7 or 8 Ravel biographies prior to this one I still learned a few new things and for this I am grateful. ... Read more

Product Description
Demonstrating the vibrant nature of current research on Maurice Ravel, one of the most significant figures in twentieth-century French music, a team of distinguished international scholars provides new interdisciplinary perspectives and insights. Through historical, critical, and analytical means, the volume reveals the symbiotic relationships between Ravel's music and aesthetic, cultural, literary, gender, performance-based, and medical studies. While the chapters progress from French aesthetic-literary association, including Colette and Proust, to more extended disciplinary couplings, with American history, jazz, dance, and neurology, the organization is relatively free to enable other thematic links to emerge. The volume presents a refreshing variety of scholarly approaches to Ravel and his music, set within broad contexts and current musicological debates. In a Ravelian spirit, it is intended that the essays will serve collectively as a model for expanding the agendas of other composer-based studies. ... Read more

Product Description
What is it about Bolero, Gaspard de la nuit, and Daphnis et Chloe that makes musicians and listeners alike love them so? Stephen Zank here illuminates these and other works of Maurice Ravel through several of the composer's fascinations: dynamic intensification, counterpoint, orchestration, exotic influences on Western music, and an interest in multi-sensorial perception. Connecting all these fascinations, Zank argues, is irony. His book offers an appreciation of Ravel's musical irony that is grounded in the vocabularies and criticism of the time and in two early attempts at writing up a Ravel Aesthetic by intimates of Ravel. Thomas Mann called irony the phenomenon that is, beyond compare, the most profound and most alluring in the world. Irony and Sound, written with insight and flair, provides a long-needed reconsideration of Ravel's modernity, his teaching, and his place in twentieth-century music and culture. Musicologist Stephen Zank has taught at University of Illinois, University of North Texas, and University of Rochester. He is the author of Maurice Ravel: A Guide to Research. ... Read more

Congratulations to Boosey and Hawkes for here republishing a staple of the orchestral repertoire (Maurice Ravel did an outstanding job of arranging Musórgskiy's piano original, though I wish he had included the "Promenade" immediately prior to "The Market-Place at Limoges"), with beautiful layout and a scholarly quality in terms of editing out mistakes in the previous edition.I'm also pleased that they mention where Ravel (as well as the Rímskiy-Kórsakov piano-edition) differs from Musórgskiy's original version.Definitely a MUST for any score library and for any real music-lover!!!
