Product Description
This study explores the minimalist style of music. It details its beginnings in the music of Terry Riley and La Monte Young, focuses on its major exponents, Steve Reich and Philip Glass, and reviews its broader influences both in the USA, with the work of John Adams and Meredith Monk, and in Europe, with the work of Michael Nyman, Louis Andriessen and Arvo Part. Musical discussion is contextualized within the lives and development of each major artist. This text is part of the 20th-century composers series, examining composers in a biographical context, and offering a comprehensive study of key figures in the creation of 20th-century music. None of the books in the series presume a knowledge of specialized terms or musical notation. Each book in the series features a list of works, a bibliography, and a discography. ... Read more

Product Description
When high school student Derrick Booker, the only black student at a posh Orange County high school, is accused of killing his white girlfriend, ex-college football hero and detective Jim Knighthorse is hired to dig a little deeper into the murder. It doesn't take long for Knighthorse to realize that not all is as it seems at tranquil Huntington High, from a band director who preys on the innocent to a vice-principal with a secret agenda of her own. Not to mention someone's hired a professional killer to keep Knighthorse permanently off the case.

As the investigation continues, Knighthorse's personal life is shattered by the discovery of new evidence relating to his mother's unsolved murder, a murder dating back twenty years. Reeling from the discovery, a determined Jim Knighthorse sets out to bring two killers to justice.

**Acclaim for the Novels of J.R. Rain**

"I read Dark Horse by J.R. Rain. He's the author of Moon Dance, that I reviewed last column. The author is a private investigator, and it shows; this is another fast moving and entertaining detective story. It is the first of a series, published by Lulu.com. Rain is surely destined for larger success, if he can get the right break; his fiction is fun reading."
—PIERS ANTHONY, New York Times bestselling author of A Spell for Chameleon and On A Pale Horse

"I finished Dark Horse late last night. I enjoyed it immensely--very good story, J.R.! I really liked your dialogue, which kept me chuckling each time I sat down to read the book. Add great character and scene descriptions and a well-paced plot, and you've got a gripping story indeed. I can honestly say your book was as entertaining as anything I've ever read from Patricia Cornwell. I can easily see Dark Horse moving to the big screen!"
—AIDEN JAMES, author of Cades Cove and Deadly Night

"Dark Horse is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere. Rain does an amazing job of blending suspense, mystery and humor in this fantastic debut novel destined for the keeper shelf."

"I love Jim Knighthorse! Please write faster, Mr. Rain!"

5-0 out of 5 stars DARK HORSE - A Great Read
J. R. Rain and "Jim Knighthorse" are destined to fill the void left with the passing of Robert B. Parker.I've read DARK HORSE and THE MUMMY CASE and found the plots unique and entertaining.Jim Knighthorse is an entirely human and believable character; a "jock" with a towering ego, robbed of a bright (and high paying) future in the NFL, he's beset with personal demons that literally drive him to drink, which he struggles to overcome and defeat. Over looking the typos and lapses in editing - hey, self publishing is a LOT of work - I think J. R. Rain and "Jim Knighthorse" have a bright future. I'm eagerly awaiting J. R. Rain's next Jim Knighthorse novel.

1-0 out of 5 stars SCRATCHIN' MY HEAD......
I'm with the other reviewer who wondered what book those who wrote such glowing reviews read! This was really poorly written....I finally made myself look at the typo problem as humorous....I mean, words are a writer's bread and butter and Mr. Knight really should be a little more respectful of his tools....and his readers.I was fond enough of his main character and the ego the guy carried around....but, puleeeeeeeze, the metaphysical stuff was so lame I was almost embarrassed for the poor writer.I think deep thinking is a little beyond his scope?Anyway, I can't recommend wasting time on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT NEW MYSTERY SERIES
A great new series has been started.Jim Knighthorse is the working man's J.P. Beaumont.Rain will be hard pressed to write his books fast enough.Move over Patterson and Connelly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I will be sure to read all of JR Rain's books.I think Jim Knighthorse is one of the most endearing characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Move over Sam Spade
I absolutely love this book, and promptly downloaded all the rest of Rain's books to my Kindle, and read them all within a couple of days.
Who needs sleep, after all?
Great plot, great characters, a little romance without subjecting his readers to the intimate details.
Honesty requires that I admit I believe Mr. Rain should stick with male lead characters, as I was not impressed the female in, "Moon Dance."
The rest??? All I have to say is, "Write faster Mr Rain! I'm waiting, with great anticipation." ... Read more

To the east, high on the high cliff above, something flashed.Instinctively, I turned my body, narrowing myself as a target.Beside me, next to my left elbow, a section of the boulder exploded in a small cloud of dust, pelting me with rock fragments.I dove, rolling.

The report from a rifle followed, echoing throughout the valley.
It kept echoing even as I kept rolling.

***

I rolled to the relative safety of the boulders, dirt and sand going up my shorts and into places it had no business going.

Worry about sand in your craw later.

Good idea.

The rocks gave some shelter, but not as much as I would have liked as I was forced to stay low to the ground with my face pressed against the hot earth.I removed my Browning, hoping sand hadn’t gotten lodge in the barrel.

A second shot thunked near my shoes.I jerked my exposed legs in closer as an earsplitting echo followed the shot.

Jesus, that was close.

Blindly, I eased my arm around the boulder, let loose with two shots of my own in the general proximity of the spot I had seen the reflection. The two shots were to give the shooter something to think about.I had seven more to be more careful with.

My return fire seemed to work. The shooting from above stopped, at least for the time being.I lay there behind the boulder, trying to make myself as small as possible—a difficult task at best—alert for any sounds or movement.

And then I saw movement, but not the kind I expected.... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I couldn't put this book down.It was a great book however read book 1 first because it sets the stage for who Knighhorse is.Good book.waiting on #3

5-0 out of 5 stars Best so far.
This book is even better than, "Dark Horse."
The character developement is wonderful, and the plot much better than I expected. I love the fact that the story and sub-plots take top billing over everything else, and romance is more important than sex.
I can't come up with enough superlatives, but I'll be buying whatever Mr Rain publishes, and hoping he keeps at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mummy Case - a five-star page turner
Ever since I came to Arizona in the late 60s, I've been riveted by tales and legends of mummies in the American Southwest - remember "The Thing" highway billboards? But tales of American mummies are hard to find, so I was especially excited to see that the second Jim Knighthorse mystery novel has a real mummy in it. With snappy, witty dialogue that advances the plot at a fast pace, private detective Jim Knighthorse works a mummy case in order to discover the identity of Sylvester the Mummy, one of Huntington Beach's main attractions, as well as the cause of his death. A two-pronged assignment, he also needs to find out who or what recently killed a historian who was researching the mummy's history.

His girlfriend of eight years, Cindy, a sexy woman with patience and concern about his unhealthy habits, and who also appeared in the first Knighthorse novel, makes a bigger reappearance here. A woman in jeopardy, anti-Darwinists have trashed her lecture hall and thrown quite a scare into her. She's being stalked. (I always like it when the P.I.'s main squeeze is in terrible danger! Danger and romance go together well.)

With never a dull moment in Jim Knighthorse's crazy life, he is still on the trail of whoever brutally killed his mother years before. He was ten years old when it happened, but the cold case might be heating up, thanks to clues in some old photographs that his estranged dad recently handed over.

I read this enthralling book in a single day. It was a satisfying, compelling mystery, several mysteries, in fact, with characters who sparkle and come to life like a movie in your mind, as do the California settings. His Knighthorse novels feel very true to life. I look forward to more mysteries in this series by J.R. Rain, who has also been a Hollywood screenwriter and a real, licensed California P.I.

Five stars for crafting a mystery I could not put down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than the first!
This is my 5th J.R. Rain book in 6 days and I don't even know the guy. He has made my vacation week. I have some how saved the best for last.Read the first Jim Knighthorse first to capture the full flavor of the characters. This is a well written, humorous, and interesting story; Not too serious or overly intellectual. If Rain adds some juicy sex scenes he will over take J.D. Robb in sales and give him a new publishing outlet. He is worth more than a few bucks a book in sales. Read the book, it's bargin if not outright theft! He has earned a fan. I will be following him. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent read
This is a great book, and deals with an important issue relating to the rise of Nazism and the Second World War that is too often overlooked: the fate of refugees. As illustrated in the classic 1942 film "Casablanca", the rise of Nazism forced thousands, and then hundreds of thousands of people to flee for their lives. These stateless people, often with few or no resources, tried to make their way through a Europe where on all sides powerful forces were bent on their destruction.Even in Britain and France, exiles from Nazi Germany would (after 1939) be treated as hostile aliens, although no power was more committed to the destruction of these exiles than Nazi Germany itself.

Fittko's book begins in Berlin in 1933.We find in these pages a brave and intelligent young Jewish woman of leftist tendency suddenly in grave danger with the rise to power of the murderous racist gangsterism that was National Socialism.Facing arrest for her anti-Nazi activities, she is forced to flee Germany. From this point on, the book gives an important insight into the nature and meaning of exile in the 1930s, what it was like to live a life on the run, always worried about legal papers, always trying to stay one step ahead of the Gestapo. This is not a scholarly book, but it does give an important personal insight into one of the most terrible experiences of the 20th century.Fittko eventually was lucky enough to get out of Europe.Tragically, for too many people like her, the life of exile and refugee flight would lead only to Auschwitz.

This book, along with a companion volume, "Escape Through the Pyrenees", introduces the reader to the experience of life in exile, the stress of being stateless in a world where everyone seemed to be demanding your papers, and a world where the Gestapo was anxious to ship people like you off to a concentration camp.Fittko had the opportunity to meet people like Hannah Arendt (who was greatly concerned with the problem of statelessness in her later work "The Origins of Totalitarianism") and Walter Benjamin, whose tragic suicide in the Pyrenees in 1940 cut short a career that already had produced enough of value to inspire a whole generation of literary critics and cultural theorists.Fittko is a sharp writer, offering suspense, insightful observation, and real human drama.Even more importantly, without hitting you over the head with this, she raises profound questions of morality and personal responsibility. This is a very good book, not so long, but dense with issues upon which to reflect.Read it and see for yourself. ... THE FORGOTTEN EDEN
The Talisman Chronicles #1

Hidden within the deep woods of rural Alabama, along the forgotten southern course of the Black Warrior River, lies an unseen world feared for centuries by the residents of the tiny town of Carlsdale. Only one person has ever survived a visit to this place long enough to tell about it. His name is Jack Kenney.

Thirteen years old at the time of the event, Jack and his family were forced to flee Carlsdale and head north to the larger city of Tuscaloosa. The menace from their former home left them in peace for nearly eight years. But after the brutal murder of a noted archaeologist and teacher at the University of Alabama, everything changed. Jack and his older brother, Jeremy, attend the University and are close friends of the late professor. Within days of his death, they are abducted by the FBI, held against their will in a secret holding facility near Manassas, Virginia.

Frustrated by the brothers' seeming refusal to cooperate, the agency's interrogations become increasingly violent, until Jack gains a welcome reprieve when Special Agent Peter McNamee arrives from the FBI's Richmond office. He befriends Jack and gains his trust, drawing upon a similar supernatural event from his own youth. Willing, finally, to talk after so many years spent in sworn silence, Jack leads Peter on an extraordinary roller-coaster ride involving a mystical and deadly realm located in America's Deep South....

THE DEVIL'S PARADISE
The Talisman Chronicles #2

After escaping certain death at the hands of a rogue faction of the FBI in Manassas, Virginia, Jack and Jeremy Kenney race home to Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Time is quickly running out for them and the rest of the world to prevent seven mysterious, but deadly, objects from reaching the United States. The objects resemble enormous golden towers, and along with an eighth shimmering tower moving through America’s Deep South, they belong to deities that once ruled the earth thousands of years ago. The collective eight, known as the "Children of Elohim" are swiftly closing in on Tuscaloosa, with the promise of bloodshed unlike anything the modern world has ever witnessed.

The late Dr. Oscar Mensch has left detailed instructions for the brothers, both students at the University of Alabama, to restore an ancient shrine known as the ‘Estrella de La Sangre’ or ‘Blood Star’ in the basement of a sprawling estate located near the University’s campus. But an ominous riddle remains as to why the professor would ever want to resurrect the shrine once used for blood sacrifice in ancient Pakistan.

The answer leads to a harrowing adventure for the Kenney brothers, exposing them to new horrors, both in the States and abroad. The journey for salvation takes them to a mysterious Essene castle in the Bolivian Andes of South America, and then back to Alabama for a deadly confrontation with an unearthly menace...one that threatens mankind’s very survival.

“Aiden James writing style flows very easily and I found that CADES COVE snowballed into a very gripping tale. Clearly the strengths in the piece were as the spirit's interaction became prevalent with the family… The Indian lore and ceremonies and the flashbacks to Allie Mae's (earthly) demise were very powerful. **Acclaim for the novels of J.R. RAIN**

"Gripping, adventurous, and romantic — J.R. Rain's THE LOST ARK is a breakneck thriller that traces the thread of history from Biblical stories to current-day headlines. Be prepared to lose sleep!"
—James Rollins, international bestselling author of ALTAR OF EDEN and THE DOOMSDAY KEY

"I enjoyed MOON DANCE immensely. The protagonist, Samantha Moon, is a female vampire with a husband and children. Those predate her condition; six years ago she was attacked by a vampire and rendered into one. Now she's trying to carry on with family and private eye business, and she's a feisty, skilled person, so is doing mostly okay. It is not a horror story; she buys animal blood to eat and doesn't generally prey on humans. But her husband has an increasing problem with her coldness — not of spirit, but of body. 'You sicken me and scare the hell out of me,' he tells her. 'And when I touch you it's all I can do to not gag.' She replies, 'Words every wife wants to hear.' I love this! She really doesn't deserve to be frozen out of her marriage, yet his attitude is understandable. In the course of the novel she solves the mystery she is tackling for a client, and finds a new romantic interest. What makes it special are her character and nature. I sure wouldn't have kicked her out of bed. I recommend it as light reading, odd as that may sound."
—Piers Anthony, New York Times bestselling author of A SPELL FOR CHAMELEON and ON A PALE HORSE

"MOON DANCE is absolutely brilliant!"
—Lisa Tenzin-Dolma, author of UNDERSTANDING THE PLANETARY MYTHS

"MOON DANCE is a must read. If you like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter, be prepared to love J. R. Rain's Samantha Moon, vampire private investigator."
—Eve Paludan, author of LETTERS FROM DAVID

"Impossible to put down. J.R. Rain's MOON DANCE is a fabulous urban fantasy."
—April Vine, author of THE MIDNIGHT ROSE

"DARK HORSE is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere. Rain does an amazing job of blending suspense, mystery and humor in this fantastic debut novel destined for the keeper shelf."
—Gemma Halliday, Rita and Golden Spur award-winning author of MAYHEM IN HIGH HEELS and SCANDAL SHEET

"I totally loved THE BODY DEPARTED. As someone who communicates with those who are either earthbound or have crossed over — your descriptions and interpretations of the dialogue and circumstances could not have been written more accurately. My favorite scene is the one of Jesus stepping down from the cross and then the passionate and compassionate way it was treated as he went back to the cross. I will relive that for a long time to come. You're a wonderfully descriptive writer who paints a very creative, visionary canvass based in a paranormal pallet that only a few experience and many can enjoy. Thank you for your talent."
