Excerpt: Griselda is an opera seria in three acts by the Italian composer Alessandro Scarlatti, the last of Scarlatti's operas to survive completely today. The libretto is by Apostolo Zeno, with revisions by an anonymous author. Zeno wrote his work in 1701 and it had already been set by Pollarolo and Antonio Maria Bononcini (Albinoni, Giovanni Bononcini and Vivaldi would later produce versions). It is based on the story of Patient Griselda from Boccaccio's Decameron. Scarlatti's opera was first performed at the Teatro Capranica, Rome in January, 1721 with an all-male cast (five castratos and a tenor). The opera begins with a conventional three-movement Italian overture followed by the basic musical constituent of the recitative-aria format. Many of the arias are imposing pieces, accompanied mostly by full strings, often with woodwind support. Scarlatti also used horns prominently in the embarkation scene in Act 1, the hunting scene in Act 2, and the garden scene in Act 3. Unusually in such a late work, Scarlatti accompanies the recitatives, after the first four bars, with continuo only until the strings return in the final scene to add fervour to Griselda's last and successful plea for Gualtiero's mercy. Years before the action begins, Gualtiero, King of Sicily, had married a poor shepherdess, Griselda. The marriage was deeply unpopular with the king's subjects and when a daughter, Costanza, was born, the king had to pretend to have her killed while secretly sending her to be brought up by Prince Corrado of Apulia. Now, faced with another rebellion from the Sicilians, Gualtiero is forced to renounce Griselda a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22142983 ... Read more

Chapters: Alessandro Scarlatti, Vincenzo Bellini, Franco Battiato, Salvatore Sciarrino, Claudio Pari, Sigismondo D'india, Giovanni Sollima, Ignazio Pollice, Enzo Rao, Cataldo Amodei. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 46. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Franco Battiato (born 23 March 1945) is an Italian singer-songwriter, composer, filmmaker and, under the pseudonym Süphan Barzani, also a painter. He is considered one of the most original personalities in Italian music from the 1970s to now. Together with Alice, Franco Battiato represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 1984 with the melody "I treni di Tozeur". Battiato's songs are dreamy, controversial collages of images and sensations, very experimental and convoluted, rich of esoteric, philosophical and East Asian religious themes. His collaborations (from 1994 onward) with the nihilistic-cynical philosopher Manlio Sgalambro have added further depth to his apparently nonsensical lyrics, with references to Emil Cioran, Friedrich Nietzsche and other anarchistic and problematic thinkers. Franco Battiato was born in Jonia di Riposto, in the province of Catania (Sicily). At the age of 20 he moved to Milan and in 1968 he obtained the first musical contract. He scored some success with the romantic song È l'amore. After further covers of pop songs, he met the experimental musician Juri Camisasca in 1970 and collaborated with Osage Tribe, an Italian psychedelic-progressive rock band. As a solo artist, he released the science-fiction single La convenzione (The convention), one of the finest Italian progressive rock songs of the 1970s. Starting from 1971, Battiato devoted much of his efforts to experimental electronic music, producing a series of LPs that remained almost unknown at the time, but are now eagerly sought by collectors ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2074411 ... Read more

Product Description

This acclaimed edition of Scarlatti's operas is making available authentic versions of the works of one of the key figures in the history of opera. La Caduta (1697) is a pivotal work, bridging the composer's middle and late stylistic periods. It is the first of several collaborations with the noted librettist Silvio Stampiglia, whose characteristic intermingling of serious and comic elements is particularly effective in this work. In her introduction, Hermine Williams discusses the opera itself and performance practices. A translation of the libretto is provided.

Hermine Weigel Williams is Lecturer in Religion and the Arts, Hamilton College.

The Scarlatti operas now published are Eraclea, Marco Attilio Regolo, Griselda, The Faithful Princess, and Massimo Puppieno.

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Alessandro Scarlatti (2 May 1660 - 24 October 1725) was an Italian Baroque composer especially famous for his operas and chamber cantatas. He is considered the founder of the Neapolitan school of opera. He was the father of two other composers, Domenico Scarlatti and Pietro Filippo Scarlatti. Scarlatti was born in Palermo, then part of the Kingdom of Sicily. He is generally said to have been a pupil of Giacomo Carissimi in Rome, and some theorize that he had some connection with northern Italy because his early works seem to show the influence of Stradella and Legrenzi. The production at Rome of his opera Gli Equivoci nell sembiante (1679) gained him the support of Queen Christina of Sweden (who at the time was living in Rome), and he became her Maestro di Cappella. In February 1684 he became Maestro di Cappella to the viceroy of Naples, perhaps through the influence of his sister, an opera singer, who might have been the mistress of an influential Neapolitan noble. Here he produced a long series of operas, remarkable chiefly for their fluency and expressiveness, as well as other music for state occasions. In 1702 Scarlatti left Naples and did not return until the Spanish domination had been superseded by that of the Austrians. In the interval he enjoyed the pa...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ...
