Long before the days of pint-sized, chemically powered, supergirl trios, there was one very special little girl who earned generations of fans and helped make the world a better place using only her natural smarts, her big heart, and a healthy dose of sass. Whether she's outsmarting Tubby and his fellow "Boys Only Club" members in the name of fairness and equality, weaving hilarious tall tales to entertain the irascible tot Alvin, or simply using her keen wit to think her way out of a million impossible situations, Little Lulu remains one of the most lovable comic-book heroines ever. As fresh and funny today as they were decades ago, these classic comics will keep you laughing and reading for ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dennis The Menace, eat your heart out...!
I recently finished plowing through the collected paperback editions of the classic 1940s/1950s "Little Lulu" comics, and wanted to put in my vote... yes! yes! yes!True, it's a little disappointing that the strips are reprinted in black-&-white and not in the original color versions, but the real genius of these works is in the draftsmanship of artists John Stanley and Irving Tripp, and once you get onto their wavelength, even these half-size B&W reprints are a pure delight. They can say so much with such economy -- a single panel of Lulu's unbridled mischief can have you laughing your head off, and here, in this multi-volume collection, you've got a real treasure trove of some of the best graphic-art humor produced in the 20th Century.Great stuff, highly recommended, and major kudos to Dark Horse for making this artwork both available and affordable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Comics Fans
I've brought home a great many different books in an attempt to get my seven-year old boy enthusiastic about reading.
Of all the books and comics he's examined, Little Lulu is the one that keeps him coming back for more. These are books he will pick up and read without prompting, and they can hold his attention for hours at a time.
At first I was surprised, thinking he would prefer some swashbuckling action hero, but then I read the stories more closely in an attempt to understand their appeal.
It turns out that my kid is a pretty good critic. These are solid, amusing stories with memorable, amusing characters. They beat the pants off 99% of the pre-packaged film/video game tie-ins that pass for kid's reading these days.
So hats off to Little Lulu, Dark Horse Publishing, and the simple appeal of a good, funny story well told.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lulupalooza
In the early '90s, Another Rainbow Publishing embarked on a gargantuan task: to publish the entire run of Marge's Little Lulu comic books in an oversized, slipcased, hardback collector's edition. That beautiful series is now collectible and rare, the holy graal of Little Lulu collectors, but Dark Horse, with these new, affordable editions, has brought Marge's unsinkable moppet within reach of everyone. How do the series compare?

Amazon calls "Lulu Goes Shopping" volume one, but the Dark Horse edition is labeled #4, and contains seven comics that were originally published between November 1948 and June 1949 as "Marge's Little Lulu" issues six through twelve. This roughly corresponds to volume four, set two of the first series of the Another Rainbow set, which contained comics 6-11. The comics in "Lulu Goes Shopping" are in black and white, as were the Another Rainbow sets, with a full color cover featuring Irving Tripp's original art from issue number six. The AR set included color plates of all the covers, and a short feature in the comic, "Lulu's Diry," left out of the DH collections.

All of which is to say that Lulu lovers may still want to track down the AR sets which are far easier to find than the original comics, but at about ten bucks a book, Dark Horse has done a great job with Marge's Little Lulu, which is sure to win new fans and readers as it has every time it's been republished since Marge's first single panel comic in the Saturday Evening Post in 1935.

The genius of the comics is writer par excellence, John Stanley (Melvin Monster, Thirteen Going on Eighteen), but the back cover depicts the latest Lulu incarnation, CINAR's delightful cartoon series, seen on HBO, The Little Lulu Show, collected on DVD as "The Best of Little Lulu" (see my Amazon guide, "Cartoons Without Cable" for more information). "Dark Horse is really galloping" is how The HoLLywood Eclectern, the newsletter of all things Lulu, described the new Dark Horse series. The best kept secret in comic collecting, Ed Buchman publishes the journal as a labor of love and sends it out free to Lulu fans young and old. Write: "The HoLLywood Eclectern", PO Box 4215, Fullerton, California 92834.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
This is classic. You'll laugh and laugh.Especially when Tubby takes Little Lulu treasure hunting in the lake.

5-0 out of 5 stars A ClassicLoved By Many - U Go Lulu !!!
I was very pleased to see that Dark Horse Books have taken on the task of reprinting the Little Lulu comics. Much like the Peanuts serial reissues this book (Vol 1) gives you all the LuLu comics from issues #6 - #12. Vol 2 & 3 are soon on their way. These comics (besides the originals) were only previously available in very expensive reprint bindings that cost well over one hundred dollars and are long out of print. The price on these books is well affordable.
The comics are printed in Black & White Ink (but so were the earlier expensive reissues)but they are very crisp. If you have ever seen the "Little Lulu Show" with Tracy Ullman voicing Lulu, you will recall many of these comics.
I am still giving this collection 5 stars and my only suggestion is that I wish they had included the original cover art at the start of each # issue. I also am wondering if issues #1 through #5 will see the light of day.I hope they keep churning these delightful books out, until they covered them all. I've waited a long time for Little Lulu Comic Reprint Books and I know she, Tubby, Alvin, Iggy and Annie have many fans who will be pleased as punch to have them back. ... Read more

Product Description

Stanley Woodward (1895–1964) was a veteran sports writer, newspaperman, and sports editor of the New York Herald Tribune; indeed, some believe he was the greatest of all sports editors. Paper Tiger is his lively and vivid account of his life as an athlete, sailor, war correspondent, and metropolitan journalist.

Whether discussing his war experiences, the world of sports, or the tough and exciting world of newspaper life, Woodward speaks with a rare directness. When he doesn’t like something or someone, he makes no bones about it. Yet, despite all of his often acerbic comments, we always have the feeling that the author’s honesty is matched by his fairness. Partisan he may be; vindictive and sour he is not.

Although Paper Tiger will appeal especially to sports fans, anyone who wants to know the inside story of newspaper life will find it a fascinating book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful newspaper/sports memoir back in print
Stanley Woodward published his memoir and "hymn to newspapering" in 1963. On December 30, 2003, Jonathan Yardley penned an appreciation of Woodward and "Paper Tiger" in The Washington Post (the book was then out of print). The next four paragraphs are excerpts from Mr. Yardley's article.

Stanley Woodward stood 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighed 225 pounds and was strong as the proverbial ox. He loved sports but was injured repeatedly and had exceedingly bad eyesight, so he had to quit long before he was ready. He found a substitute. After World War I he got into journalism and in the 1930s went to the New York Herald Tribune, where he soon became "the best sports editor in the Tribune's, or probably any paper's, history.".

That is the judgment of Richard Kluger, as expressed in his monumental "The Paper: The Life and Death of the New York Herald Tribune." Today, nearly four decades after Woodward's death, it is a view near-universally held in the inner circles of sports journalism. During his two stints at the Trib, from 1930 to 1948 and 1959 to 1962, Kluger writes, its "sports pages achieved an unmatched level of pungent literacy," the full credit for which rested with Woodward. According to Frank Graham Jr., one of the many gifted writers who worked with him, he had "high standards and unfailing courage," including the courage to speak his mind to bosses who didn't always like what he said.

He was "direct, blunt, uncompromising and honest." That is the testimony of the best writer to grace his or anyone else's sports pages, Walter Wellesley "Red" Smith, whom Woodward rescued from inexplicable obscurity at the Philadelphia Record in 1945 and who quickly became a star of incomparable brilliance. Woodward said Smith "was a complete newspaper man" who "had been through the mill and had come out with a high polish." Woodward was baffled that no other New York paper had "grabbed him," but thought he knew the reason: ". . . most writing sports editors don't want a man around who is obviously better than they. I took the opposite view on this question. I wanted no writer on the staff who couldn't beat me or at least compete with me. This was a question of policy."

Journalism has produced surprisingly few good memoirs, perhaps because journalists tend to be reactive rather than reflective, perhaps because they are so accustomed to protecting their sources that when the opportunity arises to spill the beans, they instinctively recoil from it. "Paper Tiger" is the exception: candid and uncompromising, like its author, but also engaging and funny, at times uproariously so.

Thank you to the University of Nebraska Press and Bison Books for resurrecting "Paper Tiger". Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cracking Good Tale of History's First Media Superstar
Just how fleeting fame can be is handily revealed in John Bierman's autobiography of one of history's first media superstars: John Rowlands AKA Henry Morton Stanley.Today, if he's thought of at all, Stanley is chiefly remembered as the author of comically droll inquiry, "Doctor Livingstone, I presume?"

In "Dark Safari: The Life Behind the Legend of Henry Morton Stanley," we're introduced to an almost stereotypical celebrity.A man who substitutes the spotlight for the affection and love he never received as a child. In this regard you could replace Stanley's name with that of almost any current pop star.

Stanley rose from grinding poverty, abandoned by his mother and then, literally and serially, by every other member of his family. From these unpromising roots, Stanley became the quintessential "self-made-man" reaching the apex of his fame by being knighted by Queen Victoria.

In between these two extremes we are treated to a well researched and lively narrative that illuminates as much about the Victorian era as it does Stanley's life. The story is told chronologically, naturally following Stanley's personal evolution.Seeking to escape the destitution of his native Wales, Stanley wangles working passage on a ship to America where he finds opportunity to match his ambitions.Though having no strong feelings about slavery one way or the other, he enlisted and fought as a Confederate infantryman during the Civil War.He is injured early on and captured.Taking advantage of a amnesty program for those who would swear allegiance to the Union, he joins the Federal navy, survives the war, and following the popular tide, becomes a reporter during the western expansion.

It's in the wilds of the west that Stanley comes into his own displaying his legendary toughness and freedom of thought to buck authority (while craving its approval.)Despite the prejudices of the day, Stanley sympathizes with the plight of Native Americans, writing:

"We know that if the redman could have been enslaved he would have been before this... [A]ll evidence which can be furnished shows plainly that the Indian has ever been the wronged party..."

Stanley considered his experience during the Indian Wars as "a kind of apprenticeship to the longer and more difficult one I was to continue into Unknown Africa."

For all of Stanley's Victorian ideals, he wrote with a personal angle on the events he covered. As Biernan writes, "[Stanley] had an eye for human interest, then a novel journalistic concept, writing not just about the generals and politicians on both sides of the conflict but about the ordinary soldiers and citizens who were caught up in it."

Stanley lived a rollicking life, which he took pains to document, albeit in an idealistic self-serving way.In reading this fascinating biography you'll learn that the rescue of Livingstone was only a small part of Stanley's life.Biernan's meticulous research separates much fact from Stanley's intentional fiction. The end result is not a diminishment of the legend, but a revelation of a man with whom many of us will identify.

If you have any interest in the Victorian era or the golden age of exploration, this book deserves a place of honor in your collection. ... Read more

One of the most important figures in Canadian history, Frederick Arthur Stanley’s most enduring legacy is not his term as the country’s sixth Governor General but the trophy cup that bears his name. Here, Lord Stanley’s political legacy — his diplomacy in dealing with the United States, his embrace of Canada’s West, and his nimble handling of domestic crises — is explored in vivid detail, fleshing out a man who was far more than just an avid sportsman.

Product Description
This book presents the theological work of Stanley Hauerwas as a distinctive kind of "liberation theology". John Thomson offers an original construal of this diffuse, controversial, yet highly significant modern theologian and ethicist. Organising Hauerwas' corpus in terms of the focal concept of liberation, Thomson shows that it possesses a greater degree of coherence than its usual expression in ad hoc essays or sermons. John Thomson locates Hauerwas in relation to a wide range of figures, including the obvious choices - Rauschenbusch, Niebuhr, Barth, Yoder, Lindbeck, MacIntyre, Milbank and O'Donovan - as well as less expected figures such as Gadamer, Habermas, Ricoeur, Pannenberg, Moltmann, and Hardy. Providing a structured and rigorous outline of Hauerwas' intellectual roots, this book presents an account of his theological project that demonstrates an underlying consistency in his attempt to create a political understanding of Christian freedom, reaching beyond the limitations of the liberal post-enlightenment tradition. Hauerwas is passionate about the importance of moral discourse within the Christian community and its implications for the Church's politics. When the Church is often perceived to be in decline and an irrelevance, Hauerwas proffers a way of recovering identity, confidence and mission, particularly for ordinary Christians and ordinary churches. Thomson evaluates the comparative strengths and weaknesses of Hauerwas' argument and indicates a number of vulnerabilities in his project. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars John Muir, Naturalist, Inventor
I'm lucky enough to have some property near where John Muir's family built their home in Marquette County, Wisconsin. Our local Historical Society is featuring "The Year of John Muir" for 2010, so I thought I'd get this book to help me get a better idea of Muir and his life.

What a guy! Not only considered the father of the Sierra Club, he became friends with Teddy Roosevelt and tirelessly campaigned to start the National Park System. He was a dedicated student and WALKED more than 60 miles one-way from his farm home to classes at the early UW-Madison. His dorm room was filled with his collection of plants, stuffed creatures and his inventions. One of them was a hand-built, wood device that acted as a conveyor system for his textbooks. The books were attached and he had the device set up so that it brought a book up, the book opened, he read/studied for a predefined period of time, then the device re-activated and brought the next textbook up.

His family life was on the tough side; his father was very strict, but I think it helped John appreciate nature and being outdoors all the more.

3-0 out of 5 stars A unique approach to the telling of John Muir's life
If you don't know much about naturalist John Muir, don't start with this book.First, read one of his own works -- like _My First Summer in the Sierra_ -- and then proceed to a tribute like _The Pathless Way: John Muir and American Wilderness_ by Michael P. Cohen.

Finish those two, and then you'll have the background information needed to appreciate _The Heart of John Muir's World_.The author obviously read a ton of correspondence to and from Muir family members and friends in order to glean insights into the lives of everyone close to John, as well as John himself. You'll find details here not common to other biographies, with a particular focus to the lifestyle the Muirs made for themselves in central Wisconsin. You'll realize how close the Muir brothers and sisters were, in spite of eventually settling in as varied locations as Virginia, Kansas, Nebraska, and California. You'll understand how all of them held an appreciation of nature beginning with the time that they grew up and worked on the family farm -- and that John's ideas about preserving wild areas began right there, too.On three different occasions during his lifetime, John looked into buying and setting aside part of the Wisconsin landscape that he loved, so that it could be enjoyed by others as he had seen it as a child. But either the deals fell through, or the current owners refused to sell.In spite of those setbacks, a small John Muir Memorial Park now stands in Marquette County, Wisconsin, while John's larger contribution to us and to future generations is half a continent away, in Yosemite National Park.

If you're not content with simply knowing that he was a naturalist, the founder of the Sierra Club, and a major instigator for the creation of the U.S. National Parks system, you'll find more about John Muir's day-to-day world in this book. And when you finish, you will understand that the subtitle "Wisconsin, Family, and Wilderness Discovery" refers to the three great loves of his life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Offers some controversial interpretations
A Mind Patient and Untamed: Assessing John Howard Yoder's Contributions to Theology, Ethics, and Peacemaking is an anthology of essays by a variety of learned authors, each dissecting of the works of John Howard Yoder, known for "The Politics of Jesus" and other writings in which he scrutinized the Bible and his own Anabaptist tradition. Yoder's astutely reasoned theological discourse, his opposition to allowing Christian doctrine to be easily reshaped by contemporary dogmas, and more are analyzed in depth; while A Mind Patient and Untamed offers some controversial interpretations, this collection is akin to Yoder himself in its emphasis on keeping one's mind open and the importance of understanding what individual authors truly have to say rather than what one's own preconditions impress upon others' words. Highly recommended for academic and church libraries, as well as anyone interested in further examination and reflection upon Yoder's works.
