Product Description
To mark ASCE’s 150th Anniversary, this outstanding collection of original history and heritage papers documents the emergence and growth of Civil Engineering in America. From John Smeaton, who first sought to raise the stature of the engineer to a professional level, to Benjamin Wright, who is considered the father of American Civil Engineering, to the origins and early years of the American Society of Civil Engineers, you’ll witness the birth and early development of the Civil Engineering profession in America. This early development is poignantly illustrated through excerpts from the diary of a young civil engineer visiting the United States in 1837. His diary provides a glimpse of the new frontier where America’s rapid growth and expanding boundaries defined a unique engineering approach not found in England or continental Europe. Other papers recognize the engineers and their accomplishments that have made the Civil Engineering profession what it is today. The marvelous efforts of three prominent engineers: Latrobe, Jervis, and Meigs in the design and development of water distribution systems in Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, DC, are documented. Transportation history is also covered with stories of the Potomac Canal, the C&O Canal, the National Road, and the B&O Railroad. Important discoveries in material science, such as hydraulic cement and reinforced concrete, are also discussed. Additionally, preservation case studies include special insights into structural renovations to the US Capitol and the geology of the monumental core in Washington, DC. These proceedings support the continuing efforts of the ASCE Engineering Education and History and Heritage committees to develop course material for teaching civil engineering history in universities. An expanded module of Civil Engineering Education History is offered, along with the history of analytical modeling, and the development of testing and monitoring tools. This proceedings for the ASCE 150th Anniversary (1852-2002) contains papers presented at the Fourth National Congress on Civil Engineering History and Heritage held in Washington, DC, November 2-6, 2002, during the ASCE Civil Engineering Conference and Exposition. ... Product Description

For more than a century the establishment of national parks and protected areas was a major threat to the survival of indigenous people. The creation of parks based on wilderness ideals outlawed traditional ways of life and forced from their homelands peoples who had shaped and preserved local ecosystems for centuries.

Today such tragic conflicts are being superseded by new alliances for conservation. Conservation Through Cultural Survival assesses cutting-edge efforts to establish new kinds of parks and protected areas which are based on partnerships with indigenous peoples. It chronicles new conservation thinking and the establishment around the world of indigenously-inhabited protected areas, provides detailed case studies of the most important types of co-managed and indigenously-managed areas, and offers guidelines, models, and recommendations for international action. The book:

  • discusses the goals and development of the global protected area system
  • assesses the strengths and limitations of a range of different types of indigenously-inhabited protected areas
  • discusses key issues and indigenous peoples' concerns
  • recommends measures to promote conservation
  • suggests international actions that would promote co-managed and indigenously-managed areas
Contributors who have been actively involved in projects around the world provide in-depth accounts from Nepal, Australia, New Guinea, Nicaragua, Honduras, Canada, and Alaska of some of the most promising efforts to develop protected areas where indigenous peoples maintain their rights to settlement and subsistence and participate in management.

Conservation Through Cultural Survival will be required reading for environmentalists, protected area planners and managers, and all who care about the future of indigenous peoples and their homelands. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars enjoyed by children
I don't think too much of this book but my class of preschoolers really likes it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Delight
This whimsical charmer hearkens back to the Golden Age of children's books. The story is simple yet involving with a barnyard-full of engaging characters.

The book really shines in its beautifully-drawn illustrationsthat recall the best of 40's and 50's picturebooks. Boldly composeddouble-page spreads, they're elaborate and humorous and delighted mydaughter.

This is an unusually well crafted tale and should be snappedup.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very cute book
This is a very cute story that was a huge hit with my 5 yearold. It is very well told and I will definitely buy more books by BillMartin in the future. it also has a very nice moral, and it isn't preachy at all.

However, I do have to say it is the ugliest childrens book cover I have ever seen- you can barely read the title because it's on shiny reflective paper. The scan really doesn't do it justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Chuck is a Hit
So rarely do you find wonderful illustrations with an adorable story. It's the graphic design that makes this book so special. It's a very contemporary looking children's book for the year 2000, and combinesreflective paper and mixed medias to present the story of an animatedbarnyard where mysterious events occur from a blue seed that Chicken Chuckate. The charcters and story are age appropriate with a happy ending andit's the wonderful colors and artwork that makes the book so unique. As anadult, I want to own it for the graphics alone. My 5 year old has listenedto it over and over again with a big smile every time. Thanks to the authorand illustrator! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wisecracking, Entertaining
Before moving to Nashville myself, I had a hard time envisioning this city as a backdrop for mysteries with any bite. Chicago? Yes. NYC? Of course. Nashville? Country music? Rhinestones and banjos? No.

To my surprise, Nashville has much to offer to the genre, from the rich to the kitsch, from the twang to the trailer trash, from historical settings to modern steel and glass. Womack throws his cynical, wisecracking, not always honorable but always understandable, private investigator into the mix and comes up with an evocative mystery.

Harry James Denton finds himself in trouble after being hired by a former lover who is now married to a local doctor. The routine investigation turns ugly, and Harry finds himself at the center of the suspicion, the danger, and ultimately, the clues that will lead him to the killer. Along the way he flirts with financial trouble, physical threats, and romantic interludes.

This is entertaining, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant fiction. It's a little dated, yet still matches the mood of Nashville. Womack knows his stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bomb!
I knew the author way back in high school (Hi, Steve) and and he has certainly made a name for himself with his self-depracatory, humorous but exciting books. I especially like this series with our lovable down and out reporter turned Private Investigator. It's especially nice to have a book set in the city you grew up in.Over and over I'd think, "Hey, I've been there" or "Yeah, I know exactly what he means - that place is the pits."

Folks wanting a more serious, complex novel centered in Nashville should check out Reed Arvin's "Blood of Angels" and "The Last Goodbye".Steven will not make you sit and brood though. Instead you will find yourself laughing out loud, something expressly forbidden in modern libraries where you are given looks of impending doom. The story is classic:Gambling debts, past loves, murder and discovery.A long ago lover shows up asking Denton to investigate her famous surgeon husband and his compulsive gambling. Our her literally stumbles over the dead body of hubby in the hospital and the action begins.

It is much better than most first novels and better yet, provided the entry point for a whole slew of Harry Denton novels. Congratulations on a job well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars WARNING:WomackCan Be Addictive....
This was the first in the Harry James Denton series...and I devoured it in one afternoon.I had to have more!Went out and got as many of them as I could find...and read them all just as fast.Once I started reading, I couldn't put the books down.I was addicted...sigh.

What was cool is that I lived in Nashville at the time, and the setting was there.I learned more about the city through reading his books than I had in the entire time I'd been there.
What even made it better is that Harry lived pretty close to where I was living in real life!He even wrote about the very grocery store I went to every week...

The main character was endearing, yet rough-edged to say the least. I loved everything about the series.Do yourself a favor and pick this one up...I betcha get the next in the series, too...and the next, and the next.....

4-0 out of 5 stars The Butler Didn't Do It
In DEAD FOLKS' BLUES, the protagonist is a newspaper reporter who is fired and becomes a private investigator. All fictional detectives have to have some type of other professional background, and this one for Harry James Denton seems to really work.

When an old-college fling comes to his office wanting him to get her doctor husband out of trouble, Denton is extatic to land his first case.Rachel pays him in advance, and he heads to her husband's hospital to do a little background checking. In the process, he is knock out while Conrad Fletcher is murdered. The story really takes off from there, as Harry soon finds out that there are a multitude of suspects. No matter where Harry turns, he runs into a dead end.

Steven Womack does an admirable job of mingling several different characters. They are all tied together quite nicely in a good, cohesive plot, chock full of witty dialogue and humorous situations.

DEAD FOLKS' BLUES is a fairly entertaining novel, and a good solid effort for the first novel in the series.Although the ending is somewhat predictable, there are enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested. This is pretty good thriller. ... Read more

In 1998, a year after the death of philosopher Isaiah Berlin, a group of scholars convened to discuss his work, particularly the moral, ideological, ethnic, and cultural aspects of pluralism. This volume presents the contributions of those panelists and their lively exchanges with audience members. A testament to the continuing vitality and relevance of Isaiah Berlin’s thought in today’s social and political debates, the book includes contributions by Avishai Margalit, Aileen Kelly, Steven Lukes, and others. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Writing about Isaiah Berlin is not the writing of Isaiah Berlin
One of the distinctive elements of the writing of Isaiah Berlin is that he made intellectual history exciting for the reader. His writing has a flair, a sweep a rhythm and way of connecting the story of a thinker with his ideas which keep the reader thinking and awake.
The essays here are more bland material. And even if in the consideration of Berlin's objective- value-pluralism they do raise 'hard questions' they seem far more 'academic' than Berlin himself was.
As for the section on Israel and nationalism I am not sure that they underline sufficiently how devoted a Zionist Berlin was.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tribute to a Great Thinker and Pluralist!
This book, which was published from a conference dedicated to discussing aspects of Berlin's emphasis on value pluralism, is divided into three sections. The first focuses on his pluralism as he saw it within history. The second takes his pluralism and speaks of it in relation to moral theory. The third discusses that pluralism as relating to the question of Israel and nationalism. Obligatory disclosure: I skipped section three as Israel is not a question that interests me, so my review is on the first two sections.

Now, anyone who's read Berlin knows that he is notoriously hard to pin down. He is to historical to be a philosopher yet to philosophical to be a historian. As one who wrote more historical studies than philosophical essays (in the proper sense) Berlin's thought is hard to synthesize. This book, though, does a good service by focusing on Berlin's central theme: the plurality of values and their connection to history and philosophy. See, for Berlin, no one system could account for our moral lives. Values, ends, means, these all conflict inter- and intra-personally. No system, said he, will resolve these so that they all line up and 'hang together'. Abstractions, too, like Liberty, are meaningless without a concrete context; liberty of what according to who's view? That pluralism is what this book discusses: the first part on its affect on Berlin's historical study, the second on his philosophy.

There is a great group of thinkers here: Mark Lilla, Michael Walzer, Ronald Dworkin, Thomas Nagel, Charles Taylor - on and on. The essays, more-or-less, form a consensus and largely find Berlin's pluralism unproblematic as far as its truth goes (the only article that takes issue is Dworkin's). Each thinker, though, has a different take on what accepting pluralism means and whether, if conflicting values is 'inevitable', how far we should go to TRY and reconcile them. That's where the fun is; in these small differences. I should mention to that each section ends with a 20-or-so page 'discussion' section that must have been transcribed during the seminar. We see a lot of good interchange here between the panelists.

All in all, this is a book that should not be missed by those that find value (or question) in Berlinian pluralism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mark Lilla and Ronald Dworkin together???

Product Description
No one questions the fact that men are profoundly influenced by their fathers, but the shape and substance of that influence varies dramatically with the particulars of each family. In this, the first anthology of nonfiction prose to explore this issue in depth, editor Steven Shepherd has collected a diverse and invariably compelling group of narratives about sons and their fathers.

James Baldwin, in his classic "Notes of a Native Son," reflects on the father he barely knew, "partly because we shared, in our different fashions, the vice of stubborn pride." Geoffrey Wolff and Tobias Wolff write of their mutual father from dramatically different perspectives. A second-generation undertaker, Thomas Lynch writes lovingly of burying his father. The acclaimed scholar of African-American culture Henry Louis Gates, Jr., grew up with a father who "was not a race man," and yet their vehement arguments were part of the son's education.

"This is not a collection of horror stories; nor does it devolve into cloying sentimentality. In these true stories, some fathers work six days a week, and some get drunk every morning. Some are role models, and some are monsters. Some stay, and some leave. And their impact is undeniable."
—Teresa Weaver, Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"Our Fathers offers a series of case studies in how the American male of the 20th century eschewed direct communication and affection."

Product Description
This years IAEL book looks at the history of multiple rights deals, the types of agreements being entered into around the world now and how they vary. It examines the complex legal issues involved, most notably enforceability. Our writers consider how companies are reorganising, consolidating and formingpartnerships with other music business entities. We talk to current and former representatives of, and advisors to, major and independent record companies, the classical field, music publishers, live promoters and artist managers. We discuss brands acquiring recording rights, an Internet-based DIY project where the consumer invests, and music talent show programmes such as American Idol. Our experts predict how the deals and the business will develop. We have not focused on the tax-driven venture capital models such as those which have been offered to artists and record companies by Ingenious in the UK, as, in the current economic climate, these deals may not continue in the same form. ...
