Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Igor Stravinsky," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Igor Stravinsky in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Igor Stravinsky when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Igor Stravinsky, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Inside Stories from and about Igor Stravinsky
Perhaps due to the several films of late that allude to the life of Igor Stravinsky (17 June 1882 - 6 April 1971) returning to this fine old volume first published in 1966 is not unlike dialing up the master and asking his opinion. The title of the book -THEMES AND EPISODES - describes the content well.Though born in Russia Stravinsky spent a number of years in France and Switzerland, and when WW II broke out in 1939-40 he moved to the United States where he lived a bicoastal life between the East Coast and Hollywood. The contents of this book are extracted from letters, including a lengthy letter from Stravinsky's wife Vera, from diaries and from remembered conversations with his long time supporter and right hand man, Robert Craft.

Stravinksy writes with the same brilliance that makes his compositions so electrifying. He is able to discuss fellow composers with wit(and not a little sarcasm) and in general gives the reader the tenor of the times in classical music as seen through the eyes of one of the most important practitioners of his century. Here are program notes written by Stravinsky himself, opinions by Vera for 'The Rakes Progress' premiere in Venice in 1951, interviews with Stravinsky about certain works in performance, and well carved statements about his own individual compositions.

In Part II we are treated to the diaries of Robert Craft whose writings from 1949 - 1966 are an invaluable source of the mannerisms and the health and the frustrations and the temperament of the great Stravinsky.Almost any subject concerning the composer/conductor can be found here in chronological order. For the student of classical music this volume is a treasure-trove of information (and gossip!), and for those of us who simply admire the magnificent scores he created, this book is a window into his life and thoughts. Highly recommended.Grady Harp, September 10

5-0 out of 5 stars Half is commentary by Stravinsky and half is from Craft's diaries
About half of this is Stravinsky commenting on trends in art and the art business (and art includes music as well), commentary on some of his works (very interesting), some letters (one by his wife, Vera, to a cousin in Moscow has some most interesting observations about the composer), some transcripts of interview, some talk about T.S. Eliot and his death, and comments about some then current conductors.

The personal comments Stravinsky makes about certain composers and conductors can cause me to scratch my head, but it may be more of a personal reaction by Stravinsky because of the way they treated him and his music. However, it may be that there are things he knows that I have missed.I just don't know.

The second half of the book are selections from Craft's diaries from 1949-66.We get Craft's keen observations of different places around the world, his private meetings with Schoenberg, and his observations during world travels with Stravinsky.

This is very interesting material and something everyone interested in Stravinsky and his music will want to read and think about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive and essential
Stuart's exhaustive discography is essential for any Stravinsky collector eager to track down the recordings, whether on vinyl or reissued on CD. Comprehensive session notes help untangle the confusion of when, where, andwho, and the Introduction offers an excellent picture of Stravinsky'songoing conflict with the recording process. Pricey but well worth it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The Rake's Progress is Stravinsky's biggest work and one of the few great operas written since the 1920s, rare too for the unusual quality of its libretto, by Auden and Kallman. Its importance is undisputed, but so too are the problems it raises: problems of both performance and understanding, caused by the irony with which it is so thoroughly permeated. In aspects of style and operatic convention it looks back to the eighteenth century, and in particular to the operas of Mozart and da Ponte, while making references also to other periods, to operas from Monteverdi to Verdi. Yet at the same time it is wholly a work of the twentieth century, and indeed it is centrally concerned with the impossibility of return, artistic, psychological or actual, as well as with the nature and limitiation of human free will. The Rake's Progress is not one of unbridled dissipation but rather, more interestingly, one of attachment to naive notions of freedom and choice, and his tragedy is that he can never go back. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic deal
great price to own a score of such a landmark piece of music

5-0 out of 5 stars Firebird review
The score was exactly what I needed. It was in good shape with no markings in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Igor Stravinsky's "The Firebird"
Among the treasures of the 20th Century's greatest and most important composer, The Firebird is a lush and colorful work.

The first of three ballets written for the Ballet Russes (the subsequent being Petrushka and the importan Rite of Spring), Stravinksy produced a score of such imagination and ingenuity.Stravinsky's teacher was Rimsky-Korsakov, the unequivicol master of orchestration during his time, and one can see how he employed his education into this work.

The Firebird is based on a Russian Folktale describing an adventure of a young man who frees the mystical Firebird and defeats the evil King Kaschei. The work premiered in 1910, performed by the famed Nijinsky, Sergey Diaghilev the impressario. This is truly and brilliant work and is so colorful. It is much longer then the suite as it is presented as the full ballet.

The score is large and easy to read.Text is included with English translation as well as a brief sonopsis. It lies flat on a desk or music and is inexpensive -- ideal for the starving music student.I highly reccommend this score for the serious musician or listener alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great score
If you have ever heard any of the firebird, or if you are interested in composition, compositional make-up or instrumentation, this is the perfect book for you.Quite possibly one of the greatest ballets of all time (not to mention one of the greatest orchestral pieces), it's a welcome addition to any connection. If you like the rites of spring or petrushka, this is a great score to own NOTE: this is not the 1919 Firebird Suite that is most popular - this is the full score - it has probably a half hour more of music and some much more interesting orchestrations! It is well worth the very low price (only 12.95!) ... Product Description
Few would dispute that Igor Stravinsky was the greatest composer of the twentieth century. Conductor and writer Robert Craft was his closest colleague and friend. Together they published five acclaimed collections known as the Conversations series, which sprung from informal talks between the two men. In this newly edited and re-structured one-volume version, Craft brings Stravinsky's reflections on his childhood, his family life, professional associates, and personal relationships into sharper focus and places the major compositions in their cultural milieux.

5-0 out of 5 stars heady stuff!
What consolations are found in Robert Craft's amazing conversations with Stravinsky. For artists, Stravinsky comes through as a living colossus sitting next to you. The span of his intellect does impress, and with apparently blithe effort on his part, for it never flashes. It only glows. Stravinsky can open his world with a few chosen sentences; entering those tall doors one can only be subsumed in a vast arc of modern art in the person of one man, one great being. Craft's ardent intellect (wonderful queries all, leading the master in) relaxes within his affection for Stravinsky, not only respect but love too. That fusion of intellect and heart marks the book with a perfect pulse. Stravinsky's words come as unfussy and decisive as his music. His remarks on his time in Ustilug before returning to Petersburg offer loads of insight - Firebird was to come shortly - and throughout the book he leads Craft patiently with, typically, a largesse of economy. I'm struck by the providence of their remarkable relationship, the evocative noble aspects of it - how we've all benefitted! The chemistry that undergirds all the Craft-Stravinsky dialogues indicates Stravinsky knew well the worth of their venture, and saw to it that we might profit. Recommended without reservation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful insights into Stravinsky's youth, views on music, and his own operas
This is a most interesting set of conversations between Craft and Stravinsky. In many ways it is more personal than the earlier books by Stravinsky and quite frank in his assessments of the artists he knew and current trends in music and art.I cannot say that I agree with all of the master's judgments, but he is Stravinsky and I am not.He is always interesting and amazingly well read in his own art and in others.

His anecdotes from events in his career are always interesting and usually enlightening. The photographs reproduced here are especially interesting because of the people Stravinsky is with and what they say about the time and places when the were taken.

The book first takes us into his childhood, again, but this time in a most personal way.He then recounts various people he knew and provides us his portrait of them and often includes letters. He then gets directly into questions about music. For music lovers this is the most vital portion of the book. The last section talks about Nightingale, Persephone, and The Rake's Progress.Stravinsky also includes the outline he and Auden developed during their first ten days together working on the opera.Fascinating stuff.

A must read for all who love Stravinsky's music and for any general music reader who wants to know about one of the great musical figures of the twentieth century. That it can be had so inexpensively is a real plus!

5-0 out of 5 stars Domination of intellect
The book provides an incredible value for those interested in artistic developments in Paris, under Diagilev's "Ballets Russes" leadership.I was impressed by the broadness of Stravinsky's thinking, by his incredible intellect and by his constant quest to explore the new - the ultimate attribute of creativity. The book is full of interesting memories on many famous people. ... Product Description

In Multiple Masks, Maureen A. Carr studies Igor Stravinsky's creative process for Oedipus Rex, Apollo, Perséphone, and Orpheus through his musical sketches and other documents—scenarios, librettos, correspondence, reviews, and philosophical commentaries, as well as previously uncited sources for Stravinsky's book Poetics of Music. A clear explanation of Stravinsky's compositional techniques within a broad cultural context emerges for each of these four significant works. Carr concludes that Stravinsky used Greek myths as filters for certain poetic ideas and musical techniques that he developed in his earlier works. At the same time the mythological story lines provided him with the objective stance that he was seeking in these neoclassical works.
