Get a life, please...
An interesting book of its kind.While the author makes a number of thoughtful points, it nevertheless strikes me as yet another excursion into political correctness.This is "The Mikado", for heaven's sake, and not some racist, anti-Japanese 19th century rant.It was meant to be taken about as seriously as a Monty Python program - which reminds me, what does Ms.Lee think of Terry Jones and Michael Palin dressed up as fat, dowdy women?Is that supposed to be an anti-feminist statement on the part of English comedians?In all fairness, Ms.Lee, as an Asian lady herself, is probably sensitive to mocking ethnic stereotypes - but "The Mikado" is only a mockery of Victorian England using silly pseudo-Japanese characters in exotic costumes. This book takes one of my all-time favorites of English literature and kicks it in the backside, all the while wondering why everyone else loves it so much.To this I say, "get a life".

One thing I do agree with is that Hollywood and Broadway have, until recently, made an unfortunate habit of casting white actors in major oriental roles.It never looked or felt correct, and mercifully we are moving away from such grotesqueries as Marlon Brando and Alec Guiness made up to look Japanese.Yet who doesn't love Yul Brynner as the King of Siam?And "The Mikado" is routinely performed by people of all ethnicities, often all mixed up in the same productions.Hello, this is a f-a-i-r-y-t-a-l-e.

And why does she coin an odd word like "yellowface" to describe oriental characters played by white people? Doesn't it make more sense to just fall back on the old-fashioned terms, whiteface and blackface?Yellowface comes much closer to describing European opera being performed by Japanese singers.This does happen, but I don't know of anyone getting upset by it.In our world of hyper-sensitive political correctness, we don't need to be preached at over a 19th century Britcom, loved by millions of people around the world, including (as she notes) in Japan itself.Again, I say she needs to get a life. ... Better textbooks exist...
While experimenting with different textbooks for my Microeconomics classes, I decided to try the O'Sullivan and Sheffrin text.That experiment lasted two semesters.

Portions of the textbook are written at levels which are too low for college/university students, while other portions expect students to go beyond the scope of the material covered in the text.For example, in the chapter on demand and supply, surpluses and shortages are never referred to as such.Instead, they are only referred to as 'excess supply' and 'excess demand'.Too simplistic of a definition is also used for opportunity cost.

At the same time, additional problems inserted near the end of each chapter (not the chapter problems themselves), require students to apply the theory in a way that isn't taught in the textbook.Any student who has been required to complete these questions, on the basis of the textbook alone, may have experienced a lot of frustration from attempting these problems.

In addition, the textbook presents a detailed theory of taxicab licensing, yet doesn't completely explain all of the needed theory (short-run and long-run) for the market structures (pure competition, monopoly, etc.)The explanation of taxicab licensing is poor, for this level of student.

For any professor considering adopting this textbook, the testbank offers some very good questions.However, apparently some of the questions have been changed, perhaps from an earlier edition, but the answers haven't been.Overall, there were more errors in this testbank than in others I've used.

To anyone required to purchase this textbook for a course, I would recommend purchasing or borrowing other textbooks to supplement this text.If someone wants to learn Microeconomic theory on their own, there are better books available. ... Read more

This works is a major contribution to knowledge about Gilbert and Sullivan because it treats their works as comic operas. It shows that Sullivan was a serious composer and his work with Gilbert not simply as a diversion from more serious work.

It is a broad overview of the world of Gilbert & Sullivan, with emphasis shared on the works and lives of these remarkable men. Scores of photographs and sketches detail their theatrical era and the author avoids any kind of musical analysis. The book seems aimed at the layman (like myself) who wants all the major points of this Victorian phenomenon.
