Product Description
Celebrating its 100th anniversary, this extraordinary series continues to amaze and captivate its readers with detailed insight into the lives and work of music's geniuses. Unlike other composer biographies that focus narrowly on the music, this series explores the personal history of each composer and the social context surrounding the music. In a precise, engaging, and authoritative manner, each volume combines a vivid portrait of the master musicians' inspirations, influences, life experiences, even their weaknesses, with an accessible discussion of their work-all in roughly 300 pages. Further, each volume offers superb reference material, including a detailed life and times chronology, a complete list of works, a personalia glossary highlighting the important people in the composer's life, and a select bibliography. Under the supervision of music expert and series general editor Stanley Sadie, Master Musicians will certainly proceed to delight music scholars, serious musicians, and all music lovers for another hundred years. ... Finally, you can play at the original tempo to the accompaniment of an orchestra, piano, or basso continuo. Product Description
In glittering 18th-century Venice, music and love are prized above all else--and for two sisters coming of age, the city's passions blend in intoxicating ways.

Chiaretta and Maddalena are as different as night and day. The two sisters were abandoned as babies on the steps of the Ospedale della Pietá, Venice's world-famous foundling hospital and musical academy. High-spirited and rebellious, Chiaretta marries into a great aristocratic Venetian family and eventually becomes one of the most powerful women in Venice. Maddalena becomes a violin virtuoso and Antonio Vivaldi's muse. The Four Seasons is a rich, literary imagination of the world of 18th-century Venice and the lives and loves of two extraordinary women.

Praise for THE FOUR SEASONS

"Pop Vivaldi's masterpiece into the CD player, brew a pot of tea, and prepare to relinquish the rest of your afternoon. Corona brings Venice and Vivaldi to life, delivering a stirring story of love, ambition, and music that will keep you reading long after the last note of the concerto has ended."
--Lauren Willig, author of The Secret History of the Pink Carnation

"Corona does a magnificent job of showing us the violent contradictions of life in 18th-century Venice, through the eyes of two musically gifted orphan sisters. Their relationships with music and particularly with the complex, enigmatic figure of Antonio Vivaldi are sensitively explored. This novel resists the easy cliché and really succeeds in drawing a world that is both panoramic and intimate."
--Susanne Dunlap, author of Liszt's Kiss

"Music and the dangerous, exquisite world of 18th-century Venice form the setting of this poetic, sensual story of two orphaned sisters. The Four Seasons is a beautifully written addition to the handful of fascinating novels about women and the arts in this most intriguing of cities."
--Stephanie Cowell, author of Marrying Mozart

"Laurel Corona's The Four Seasons is a poignant tale of two sisters, layered exquisitely over the exotic world of brilliant priest/composer Vivaldi and his 18th-century Venice. The result: a vibrant crescendo of hearts and history."
--Karen Harper, author of The Last Boleyn and The First Princess of Wales

"I've never been to Venice, played a violin, or for that matter carried a tune, but after reading The Four Seasons I feel that I've experienced all three, and through them come to a better understanding of the many forms love takes. Brava, Laurel Corona."
--Sally Gunning, author of The Widow's War and Bound

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining and even Educational !!
What's not to love about this book?
Great Read..couldn't put it down..didn't want to put it down--even when my eyes were tired and a bit blurry :0)
Seriously--great historical value-very well written and worth every dollar!
I am looking forward to Laurel's next book "Penelope's Daughter" next October!

5-0 out of 5 stars Viva Vivaldi!
Anything Vivaldi fascinates me, so of course I was thrilled to see another novel centered around him. This fun, easy read is hard to put down. Vivaldi is presented as a very colorful character who dominates every scene he's in. The two sisters, Chiaretta and Maddalena, whose lives ultimately take very different paths, are enchanting characters, each with her own very touching story.

I thoroughly appreciate Corona's careful attention to detail in her musical descriptions as well as in her lively and meticulous "painting" of early 18th-century Venetian life. "The Four Seasons" is truly a delight for all the senses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vivaldi's Venice
Two talented sisters grow up in the Pieta, a foundling home in Venice, where the emphasis was on music, and where Antonio Vivaldi was a violinist, violin teacher, composer and conductor on and off for 37 years. One sister marries into a wealthy Venetian family; the other remains in the home, becoming a master violin teacher. The latter comes under the influence of Vivaldi, her teacher, and falls in love with him, despite the fact that he is a priest and not always completely aboveboard in his dealings with her -- and the Pieta. Vivaldi is colorfully drawn as an asthmatic redhead who, when under pressure to produce more compositions, thinks nothing of tearing off the cover of one of his previous pieces and retitling it to meet his obligations. The milieu of eighteenth century Venice is portrayed in a vivid manner, and includes mistresses and prostitutes, romantic assignations in a gondola, Carnavale, opera divas and the inside dope on how foundling homes such as the Pieta married off their charges for large sums of money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Four Seasons, The: A Novel of Vivaldi's Venice
I wish I could say I enjoyed this book. Vivaldi is my favorite composer. But as I read this novel, the characters, Maddelena and Chiaretta, felt flat to me. They took too long to develop. Though, in honesty, their love of their musical craft came through bright and clear. Within the first three chapters I read, there was no conceivable motivation forming, that I could determine, to help carry the book with the characters. The motivation for the plot must come later in the novel. Regrettably, I returned the book to the library without finishing it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as engaging as I had hoped
I tried several times to read this book.I had a very difficult time getting hooked to the point that I wanted to find out what happened next.On a 18 hour car trip with nothing else to do...I finally finished it.
The storyline is a good one and the author gives you a good picture of what life would be like in Venice during Vivaldi's time.I am not well acquainted with all the terms for different people that she uses.I had to refer to the glossary at the back to find out which position she was referring to constantly.I found this to be distracting.
If you are a music history lover, I would think this book would be a very enjoyable read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice introduction to Vivaldi
This book is a wonderful biography of Antonio Vivaldi, following his life from his birth in Venice, through to his impoverished death in Vienna, at the age of 63. It looks somewhat thin, but the creators of this book have crammed it full with many colorful pictures, making it an excellent introduction to the life of Vivaldi. All of the highlights of his career are covered, as are many of the events in his personal life. Overall, I found this to be a very nice introduction to Vivaldi, one that will hold the attention of any reader. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it to you. ... Read more

Product Description
Great was the interest among Vivaldians and opera-lovers when a score of a large portion of Vivaldi's lost opera Motezuma (1733) was unexpectedly discovered among manuscripts from the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin, returned to Berlin from Kiev in 2000. The find was providential, since in recent decades practically all of Vivaldi's performable operatic music has been presented to the public. The newly discovered work has thus given a much-needed fillip to everyone concerned with Vivaldi's operas. Scholarly discussion was initiated in an international symposium held at the De Doelen concert hall in Rotterdam in June 2005 alongside the work's first modern performance. From the start, it was planned that the papers read at the symposium, augmented by essays commissioned from other scholars, would be gathered into a book centering on Motezuma. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Better Borrowed than Bought
This book is disappointing. It lacks the fundamental mathematical guts included in Borel and Cheron's `Mathematical Theory of Bridge' and the entertainment of MacKinnon's 'Bridge, Probability and Information.'Although there is an introduction to the Theory of Vacant Places, you might do better with information from Wikipedia.
I checked some of the percentage calculations with an Excel spreadsheet. The table on p16 is correct but the column for a 5-4 split is really for a 4-5 split if the first suit breaks as listed. It is somewhat academic but typical of this book.
On page 22, the calculation starts with an assumption followed by a kluge of a proof. It is not difficult to model this problem with Excel.Typical of the book, the authors do not describe the sample space. It is crucial for this type of problem, where it is easy to make an error. Bottom line, the answer appears to be wrong.
What is really annoying the lack of mathematical formulae.Anybody who reads this stuff is going to have a math background.Nowhere is there a mention of nCr and nowhere is there a mention of P = n1Cr1/n2Cr2 etc. What is needed is a relationship between basic probability info (like in the Bridge Player's Encyclopedia of Bridge) and the Theory of Vacant Spaces.
I was looking for a modern update of Borel and Cheron but was disappointed.I upgraded my rating by one star because of the mathematical entertainment I got from the Excel spreadsheet probability calculations.

1-0 out of 5 stars full of errors
interesting mathematical idea with some instructive hands

but the calculations are full of errors and the numbers used are plain wrong - whole tables are missing in the probability section which is the main useful reference, though these are full of mistakes as well

in short the book is a waste of time

2-0 out of 5 stars Is not useful for improve your game
This book is only a curiosity, maybe a mathematic who likes bridge can enjoy it but not the bridge players who want improve their score since they can not use the calculator machine in the table.....i dont recommend it

2-0 out of 5 stars Not useful for improve your game
Is not useful for improve your game since can be interesting for some mathematics who likes bridge game is not useful for bridge player in live game, you can not use your calculator machine in the table!!!!!
Is a curiosity book, i dont recommend it for improve your level. ... Read more

Product Description
Since 1978, the 300th anniversary of Vivaldi's death, there has been an explosion of serious writing about his music, life and times. Much of this has taken the form of articles published in academic journals or conference proceedings, some of which are not easy to obtain. The twenty-two articles selected by Michael Talbot for this volume form a representative selection of the best writing on Vivaldi from the last 30 years, featuring such major figures in Vivaldi research as Reinhard Strohm, Paul Everett, Gastone Vio and Federico Maria Sardelli. Aspects covered include biography, Venetian cultural history, manuscript studies, genre studies and musical analysis. The intention is to serve as a 'first port of call' for those wishing to learn more about Vivaldi or to refresh their existing knowledge. An introduction by Michael Talbot reviews the state of Vivaldi scholarship past and present and comments on the significance of the articles. ... Read more
