Amazon.com Review
If you just stumbled into design, maybe via a hobby that grew into a career, and you want to improve your work without having to enroll in a degree program, this book can bridge some of the gaps in your acumen. Not really a primer on basic facts, Design Workshop is more like a guide to style.

The first chapter quizzes readers on mostly technical, basic details of design (like dpi), all of which can be found in Williams's previous publications (for example, The Non-Designer's Design Book). Readers will be dismayed, possibly annoyed, that the quiz answers are not provided. Even if not knowing the answers means that you need remedial help, it feels like a bit of a tease.

The next chapters show how to use stock images, or your own images, to increase the visual impact of your piece (basically through an increase in contrast). The best part of this section, and the book as a whole, is the "before-and-after" approach in the examples; they're like a series of makeovers. The captions effectively describe what was changed in the image, and how it improved the design.

The book applies a similar set of makeovers to various types of design projects: logos, forms, newsletters, tables of contents, etc. In the final section, seven designers, including coauthor Tollett, break down the process that they went through on a job of their own.

Self-taught graphic designers probably would make the best audience for this book, but designers who are of their own "school of thought" might find fault with some of the tenets that are put forth. Graphic design by nature is a subjective enterprise--at the mercy of "styles." What you get in this book is more of a "desktop-publisher style" (many of the drawings are clip art, for example). There's a lack of sophistication in the design of the book, as well as in the illustrations of posters, letterheads, advertisements, and other applications that are used as examples. On the other hand, this same open, naive look gives the book an inviting appeal, and makes it perhaps a bit less daunting than style guides, such as Robert Bringhurst's The Elements of Typographic Style, that are intended for die-hard professionals. --Angelynn Grant

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Beginner Design Reference Manual
Always having a passion for graphic design, I read through the reviews for this book and found most of it accurate. This book introduces basic graphic design at its most elemental level:key principles.

It is not a workshop where it teaches you graphic design through a workbook environment.Rather, it introduces you to principles and challenges you to think how you are able to use the information provided. It gives you perspective and adds a new way of thinking to being creative with guidelines.

Although, it touches many facets of graphic design it primarily focuses on having an aspiring graphic designer to notice the four basic elemental principles of graphic design. They would be: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity.

The book goes on to cover how different arts and mediums all need to be aware of the underlying 4 principles of graphic design.

I found this book to be highly useful, easy to read, and a great basic introduction to the subject matter. You will always be able to use it as a handy reference and that in itself will add value forever!

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated but can provide inspiration
Interesting book, could give you some ideas for improving design. But I find that it's outdated and not as modern as I would've hoped.

I am very satisfied with the product and service provided.

5-0 out of 5 stars very accessible
All of Robin Williams' design books are not only well-written, but extremely accessible, and this one is no exception. In fact, this is my favorite of all of her books. I love that she includes so many details about the projects. She even includes detailed colophons in the backs of her books, which is very useful if you are at all interested in fonts and type styles. Even if you do a lot of design work, this book is useful for jump-starting creative blocks.
Her Mac books are pretty good, too.

The second edition was needed, but could be more meatier than adding a few extra insights from the first version. But hey, I love the writer. ... Read more

Product Description

In George Washington Williams, John Hope Franklin reconstructs the life of the controversial, self-made black intellectual who wrote the first history of African Americans in the United States. Awarded the Clarence L. Holte Literary Prize, this book traces Franklin’s forty-year quest for Williams’s story, a story largely lost to history until this volume was first published in 1985. The result, part biography and part social history, is a unique consideration of a pioneering historian by his most distinguished successor.
Williams, who lived from 1849 to 1891, had a remarkable career as soldier, minister, journalist, lawyer, politician, freelance diplomat, and African traveler, as well as a historian. While Franklin reveals the accomplishments of this neglected figure and emphasizes the racism that curtailed Williams’s many talents, he also highlights the personal weaknesses that damaged Williams’s relationships and career. Williams led the way in presenting African American history accurately through the use of oral history and archival research, sought to legitimize it as a field of historical study, and spoke out in support of an American Negro Historical Society and as a critic of European imperialism in Africa. He also became erratic and faithless to his family and creditors and died at the age of forty-one, destitute and alienated from family and friends. George Washington Williams is nothing less than a classic biography of a brilliant though flawed individual whose History of the Negro Race in America remains a landmark in African American history and American intellectual history.

Product Description
With Robin Williams' guiding hand, non-professionals, artists, and designers alike have learned the principles behind elegant design. Now that much of this same audience is working on the Web, Robin has focused her attention on the specific needs of this medium with Robin Williams Web Design Workshop. John Tollett and Dave Rohr pitch in with their illustration and graphics experience to create a handsome and engaging instructional book. The ideas in this book tackle all aspects of Web design theory, including all the ways that color, fonts, clip art, photographs and so on contribute to creating a visual impression. Then the book takes the user through site planning and layout, navigability, and functionality, all in Robin Williams' clear and accessible style.Amazon.com Review
Because "there's more to Web design than Photoshop and HTML," Robin Williams Web Design Workshop covers everything for the working Web designer including "how to survive dealing with clients."

Although Dreamweaver, GoLive, Photoshop, and other applications are mentioned (Flash even gets its own chapter), the book covers the gamut of Web design and technology issues rather than focusing on an individual application.

Each chapter is divided into sections, often no more than a couple of pages long. The chapter on backgrounds, the area of a Web page that seems to attract the worst design crimes, shows you how to avoid "the heartbreak of bad background design" in no less than eight sections.

In many books this subject would be lucky to get eight paragraphs; Robin Williams Web Design Workshop uses a clear two-column layout and plenty of real-life example screen shots to get the message across. Some pages consist only of captioned screen shots providing a great source of visual ideas.

There's a good balance between purely design-related issues and the technical stuff. Subjects like search engines, embedded fonts, DHTML, and forms are given a thorough overview, highlighting the main issues, and links to sources of more in-depth information are often to be found at the end of the chapter.

If you like to learn by example and see yourself more as a designer than a programmer, but want a working knowledge of current Web technologies from a book that you can read away from your computer, this is it. --Ken McMahon, amazon.co.uk ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dated, but still useful
I love Robin Williams' books and this one was no exception when it came out. However, anyone doing web design in 2007/8 needs to have a companion book to counter the now incorrect suggestions in this book. Tables are not longer considered the only way, or really even "a" way to build web pages. Web standards have become essential if you want to comply with accessibility or just be able to make changes to your site. And if that sounds like only geeks would care, that's just not the case anymore. I would recommend finding this book used, look through it for some good ideas, and have a copy of one of Eric Meyers' books around for understanding CSS (an essential these days) and web standards in general.

I'm hoping Robin comes up with a new edition taking out nested tables and adding in more than the 4 pages of CSS. That's not to say it needs to be a CSS book (there are more than enough of those out there), but since we have to go in that direction, we could use a little more help in applying the principles she's advancing with the standards of the day. As soon as it comes out, I'll have my order in.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding, uniquely useful book
Because web sites are made with computers, somehow it seems that the vast majority of authors of "how to make a web site" books focus almost entirely on the technical aspects, as somehow devoid of relation to the practical art of making sites that work.

This book is remarkable, because it is written from the point of view of working, experienced web/graphic designers.

As the authors make clear, making a web site is a lot more than just using a computer and making pretty pictures. They clarify what you really need to know about the entire process. It covers everything about the development cycle, from clarifying the site requirements with the client, to making thumbnail sketches, to practical, nitty-gritty details of how to make an interesting, "non-boxy" site.

If you want to really understand the entire process of developing effective, beautiful web sites for people as a business, this is the best book I have ever seen on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Web Design guide
Robin Williams does an excellent job of providing clear suggestions, good rationales, and lots of examples to make her point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worn this one out
Several years ago I met with the main designer at company that created the web pages for several pharmaceutical distributors in Canada. At the time, I was well versed in creating web pages using several of the professional programs including Dreamweaver, as well as writing code. The designer, however, said that they did all of their designing in Photoshop and then used a slicing technique in ImageReady before editing the site in Dreamweaver.I hate to admit it, but I had never heard of creating web pages that way, so I went home and began looking through all of my web designing books to see if I could find a description of the technique.Yes, I found it in this book.

I don't want to give the impression that this book is all about Photoshop, it clearly isn't.But, at least for me, the Photoshop information has been extremely useful! Though I do not design the majority of my sites using Photoshop, there are some that I could not have created as easily with out it. I have not used other applications that supposedly are similar to Photoshop/ImageReady, so I can't say if they can or can not do the things that Photoshop/ImageReady can.

Nevertheless, since the time I opened this book and took a real look, I have used this book more than any other web books on my shelf.Sometimes it is to simply look at the pictures to spark a new idea, sometimes it is to review a specific designing technique.

Honestly I do not think Robin can write a bad book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some great information but not worth purchasing
I borrowed this book from the library to see if it was worth purchasing. It has some great design tips and ideas but nothing that can't be found in other books in greater detail. The glossy color pages make it fun to browse through, but there isn't enough detailed information on the various design topics.

I skimmed through the book within two or three days and don't see it as an item I will bother to purchase for my personal Web design library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bunny wins again
Any book by Bunny Williams is a winner. Her intelligence is evident, her knowledge concerning the book content can't be disbuted, but what I like about her books is her warm delivery of words,You feel that she is a friend talking over the back fence.I would recommend this book to people who want to know about how to balance areas, decoration and what plants to choose for your yard.

5-0 out of 5 stars On Garden Style
Bunny Williams' beautiful interior design style carries over into her personal garden style and commentary on general landscaping and garden design. I just finished reading this marvelous book last night; it is a wonderful source of practical and aesthetic ideas and will be my 'bible' when I plan my future garden.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Walk with Nature
I am an avid gardener and an avid admirer of Bunny Williams. This book was a perfect combination of both.It is filled with gorgeous gardens, but it has ideas and suggestions that will fit any size of garden or budget.I particularly loved the way that the book was organized. For example, if I want to look for ideas garden design, garden walls or containers, I can go to a chapter dedicated to the subject. When you read the book, you also have a strong sense of Ms. Williams' love for gardening and her commitment to a healthly environment. She inspires you to dig in the dirt and enjoy the glories of nature. To top it all off, it's a beautiful coffee table book that, in my house, will show that it is well used!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great garden design book in plain and simple English
You can look at a garden in many different ways. As a renown interior designer and president of one of the country's leading interior design firm, Bunny Williams views gardens as outdoor rooms. She applies the universal design principles that are common to architecture, landscape architecture and interior design to her garden design and achieves amazing results.

"On Garden Style" has five parts that includes 15 chapters. It covers a number of topics including imagine (personal style and putting your dreams to work, etc.), good bones make good rooms (garden walls, floor and passageway, and roof overhead), furnishing the garden (containers, ornament and furniture), planting with style (inspired planting, kitchen garden, and maintenance), the gardener in winter, selected gardens, garden guides, plant lists, and container planting schemes.

In "On Garden Style," Bunny Williams and Nancy Drew explain complicated design principles in plain and simple English and introduce them to ordinary garden lovers.

"On Garden Style" has 288 pages and many beautiful interior photos. It is a great garden design book in plain and simple English.

5-0 out of 5 stars Star Wars has some of the greatest music in movie history
First off, this review is for the regular book, not the easy piano, since I couldn't find a proper page for that book. Star Wars has some of the best music in movies, and most people will recognize the music present from Star Wars. All of the main songs from the original trilogy are in here, including Imperial March, Main Theme, and Force Theme, and even a few unique songs like Jedi Rocks and Cantina Band. The songs appear to be in original key and are really the best songs from Star Wars, and will appeal to original fans. The songs from the original trilogy I feel are more defining and bring back memories for those fans. Sure most of the songs were originally performed by John William's orchestra, but playing them on keyboard is just as musical and brings some of movies best music in a format that isn't too difficult to understand. My only complaint is that a few songs are cut short from their originals, the Imperial March and Emperors Arrival are only a petty two pages, where the full versions of these songs are around 5 minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Arrangements For Young Players
These are excellent arrangements of the often complex music of John Williams for young players.Although the arrangements are of neccesity simplified, they come across as fairly sophisticated when played and retain the spirit of the originals."The Imperial March," for example, sounds very impressive, but is not that difficult to play.My son (9), who has been taking lessons for slightly over one year, and is midway through level 2B, was able to easily handle "The Imperial March" with about a week's practice. The kids at school went crazy when they heard him practicing it, and boys, in particular, love it.Theseare popular recital pieces, judging from the number of recital videos on U-Tube using these arrangements.

5-0 out of 5 stars good beginer/intermediate book
I bought this book for my boys 7 and 8 as a step up from a movie tunes book that was a little too easy. This book was the right dificulty level making them have to work a little harder for the finished product but not too hard for kids with only 1 year of piano lessons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but BEWARE
I hadn't played the piano for about 20 years until I bought this book. I love it. I had a huge grin when I first played The Throne Room, especially The Force theme.

It certainly is easy piano; I could sight read fairly comfortably for the most part, with easy key signatures and rarely more than three fingers used in the bass (which is evenly spread between one, two and three notes at any one time) and mostly single notes in the treble. Being Star Wars, it is easy to recognise a wrong note - these tunes are so familiar.

However, you need to beware. Amazon has posted the same reviews for this book and the one with the same cover - the paperback version. Amazon has also included both song lists in the Editorial Reviews. These two seemingly identical books have a few differences in what songs they include:

1) Cantina Band (Star Wars) and Ewok Celebration (Return of the Jedi) are only in Easy Piano.

2) Ben's Death/Tie Fighter Attack (Star Wars), Han Solo and the Princess (the love theme from Empire), May the Force Be with You (all movies), Parade of the Ewoks (Return of the Jedi), Jedi Rocks (the replacement song for the Max Rebo Band in the Return of the Jedi Special Edition), and Yoda's Theme (Empire) are only in the Paperback version.

So you need to be careful that you buy the one you really want. They are both easy piano. You also need to be mindful that this edition is strictly for piano.

Overall, this product is fantastic. Even the learner can master the tunes within months. If you are adept at the piano, look for one of the more difficult versions.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Star Wars Trilogy

5-0 out of 5 stars MBCBT for Depression
Was really happy with this product. It arrived in excellent condition and very quickly to my address in Australia. Much quicker than other purchases I have made via Amazon. Thanks very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for clinicians
The authors of this book have devised one of the best strategies for countering bouts of serious depression. Indeed, mindfulness-based therapies have become a hot topic in the field of psychology, and for good reason. The evidence shows that when simple forms of meditation, relaxation, nonjudgmental observation, and acceptance are added to traditional therapies, the results are longer-lasting, and our own research at the University of Pennsylvania supports this (see Newberg and Waldman's forthcoming book, How God Changes Your Brain: Breakthrough Findings from a Leading Neuroscientist. Taking up a mindfulness practice reduces a patient's need to return to therapy, and the more serious the problem, the more effective this strategy becomes. For the general reader, I recommend The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself fromChronic Unhappinesswhich comes with a CD filled with relaxation and meditation exercises.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the clinician, not the help-your-selfer
Four starts for the clinician, two for the help-your-selfer. I felt that this book was well written; clinical, yet readable. This is a great book for the clinician or the clinician-in-training to give them a good overview. After reading this, the clinician would be ready to be trained in the techniques described in the book. This book does not give any practical skills, it describes the historical background for depression and MBCT and outlines the research that the authors conducted and the training they received.

Because it has no real practical skills (no how-to), it is a poor choice for anyone that wants to learn how to do this stuff on your own-DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! Jon Kabat-zinn has a book on the same subject that IS a how-to and I would recommend that you look there, particularly since these guys received all of their training in the subject from him and his program; you might as well get it from the original source of the process (OK so Buddha was the REAL first, but JKZ has made it a simpler program and tied it to depression).

4-0 out of 5 stars Cognitive Therapist Essential
This book is an excellent exposition of Segal, Williams, and Teasdale's therapy using a combination of Meditation, Yoga, and Cognitive Therapy.
It very generously shares their program and patient homework notes and would give any therapist the basis for development of their own program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Glory DescendingMichael Ramsey and His Writings
This is a book I would heartily recommend. It provides not only a wonderful insight into the heart and mind of Archbishop Michael Ramsey, who was a most inspiring person, but also a fund of spiritual teaching and faith-filled encouragement that is much needed in these difficult post-modern times burdened under the dictatorship of relativism. This great spiritual leader held up a vision of humanism - a Christian humanism that is most authentically filled with hope. In this he draws on and develops for people of today the approach of the Fathers of the Church, such as St Irenaeus of Lyons, whose words he delighted to quote: "The Glory of God is man fully alive; and the life of man is the vision of God."

5-0 out of 5 stars Glory Descended
A reader in the writings of Michael Ramsey, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1961 - 1974, is long overdue.Although this particular volume does not quite make up for the deficit, it does a fine job in providing readers a generation of Ramsey's death an introduction to one of the most holy men to have ever sat within the see of Canterbury. It is accompanied by several essays on Ramsey's theology as well as two homilies, the first by the current Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, and the second by Douglas Dales, the leading scholar of Ramsey's thought and author of a fantastic study of Ramsey's theology entitled Glory!.Bound quite sturdily in a hardcover book and beautifully printed, it is obvious that those who edited Glory Descending - Douglas Dales, John Habgood (former Archbishop of York), Geoffrey Rowell (Anglican Primate of Europe), and Rowan Williams (current Archbishop of Canterbury) - edited it not just with an eye to the mind, but to the heart as well.It is no exaggeration to write that this volume is lovingly edited.

This book is not, however, a theological reader so much as a theological devotional. This may sound strange, for theology and devotion are often seen as being antithetical to each other - and in certain forms of Christianity they are - but in the life of Michael Ramsey, the heart and the head were always joined together, with neither division nor confusion. Thus, the writings collected and edited within this volume are, like many devotionals, given in rather short form; some selections are a few pages long, but most only a few paragraphs (and some not even that). It is a format that one might think would not work, but it actually works surprisingly well.In perusing the pages of Glory Descending one is therefore given to depth: of the heart and the mind. The book is actually arranged according to the Church year, so that various readings are set within the historic seven season framework, but whether or not one wishes to read it seasonally, it reads quite smoothly.

Ramsey is perhaps best known for his book The Gospel and the Catholic Church, which was first printed in 1936.To this day it remains the greatest work on ecclesiology ever written by any Anglican theologian - and, for that matter, one of the finest works of ecclesiology ever written by any Catholic Christian period.Ramsey was, through and through, an Anglican: deeply rooted in the Bible, Church and Sacraments. His writings - on the Church, the sacraments, Christ, God, prayer, the transfiguration (all of which are sampled extensively in this book) - breathe the breath of the ages; it is obvious that Ramsey did not do theology as if he were shooting from the hip but yielded himself to a deep, deep study of the Tradition. The voice he speaks with is not simply his own, but joined to the chorus of the saints of all ages, East and West (and Ramsey was deeply indebted to Eastern Orthodoxy, being the first Archbishop of Canterbury to ever be invited to visit the Russian Orthodox church - during the reign of Stalin, no less! - as well as being quite active in the Fellowship of St. Alban and St. Sergius; Geoffrey Rowell has a wonderful essay within this volume on Ramsey's indebtedness to the Easter church, especially with regard to the transfiguration of Christ). This ability to join his voice - to yield his voice - to the great doctors, East and West, only shows his own humility and, at the same time, also let his own voice resound that much more clearly - but, such is the paradox of all saints!

Glory truly descended upon St. Michael Ramsey of Canterbury; he is among the last of the great Anglican theologians and he is too often neglected today, for his writings reveal a deep spirituality, animated by Scripture and rooted in prayer, a compassionate and humble spirit that was equally at home with Biblical scholars and the great saints of ages past. This hardcover book is not just a book to be read, but a book to be meditated upon again and again. In every age there are a handful of genuinely holy people that really point the way to God; Michael Ramsey was one of them. This is a fine introduction and survey of one of Anglicanism's - and Christianity's - finest and no Anglican, especially, should be without a familiarity with his writings - which were, in many ways, doxologies at the same time.May his memory be eternal. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A New Respect
I was a Joe DiMaggio fan and never cared for Ted Williams much, knowing what I did about his antics while playing baseball. It took me a long time to start this book.I found that under the gruff hard shell of this man was a genuine hero to be looked up to. Spending 26 years in the military myself, I was shocked and awed to find that Ted had given up 5 prime time baseball seasons to fly a fighter jet in the Marines for two wars when called by his country. How many players today would do that? I was touched by his feeding a stray cat after swearing at it for hanging around his back door. I was moved by Ted volunteering to spend his time giving autographs and supporting a charitable cause and asking for nothing in return. I was truly impressed that he went to his manager after having a season that was below his standards and asking for a pay reduction. I also found out that his real love was for fishing, and the book has some interesting and comical sidelights of his experiences. I think every ballplayer today should read this book and ask themselves how they stack up to Ted Williams. As for me, I still love Joe DiMaggio, an outstanding ballplayer and a gentleman, but Ted is now my hero. The enclosed CD with a live discussion with Ted is a golden bonus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slendid Writer
The media man who knew Ted Williams best does not disappoint.John Underwood has written an incisive and enjoyable book full of wonderful anecdotes about one of the most fascinating and iconic figures of the 20th Century.Like Ted Williams, John Underwood may be the last of the .400 authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book written objectively, fairly, from the inside
For all the books written about Ted Williams and his ability to hit a baseball better than anyone who has ever lived, this is a fantastic little book to read if you want to really understand this complicated man.Written by one of Ted's long-time friends and confidants, the book is unusually objective, showing Ted's flaws without apology.Ted had a temper and could be thoughtless, even cruel, and that comes through. So does the rest of Ted's character. When you finish this book, you will probably, like me, "miss" Ted just as the author does.

My favorite little incident has Ted cursing a stray cat that's been hanging around his door. Then, after preparing breakfast for his guests, he sets a plate of scraps by the door for that cat."No point in it going to waste," he gruffly says.Reading this made me smile.Ted, do you suppose the da** cat hangs around your door so much, because you feed it?A clear example of a famous and profound saying: Actions speak louder than words.Ted curses the cat, but feeds it.

I've always been a big Ted Williams fan.Reading this book has made me even more enthusiastically in Ted's corner, and it has also given me a very clear picture of his dark side.A wonderful book, fair, honest, warm, and very well worth buying and reading.

By the way, the CD that comes with this book, Ted talking about his crash landing in Korea and other assorted subjects, should be listened to after reading the book.First get to know the man, then hear his voice, and it all comes together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal Ted
John Underwood's book will please any Ted fan. He surely knew him personally, sharing anecdotes that reveal Ted Williams as a human being as well as a ballplayer. Underwood is not afraid to address Ted's insecurities or his occasional pitfalls/negatives that may have undermined some personal relationships and the baseball world. His records on and off the field speak for themselves. He was the best Boston player ever and made children his priority, including Underwood's. The book also gives much more credit to Bobby Jo Ferrell, Ted's eldest daughter and the only sane offspring of the family. He is complimentary of her efforts to free Ted from his frozen fate. Knowing her personally, I share Underwood's opinion of her positive qualities and compassion - a smile that would captivate anyone.
We all know what Ted wanted after his death and it wasn't a macabre warehouse in Arizona where humans are vivisected and desecrated. Underwood has a persoanal video of Ted saying what he desired after death - cremation and dispersal with his dog's remains in the Keys. The book reads extremely well and will keep you spellbound as if you are there with Underwood in Ted's home in the Keys or in Hernando. One on one, you feel a part of the conversations. Nicely done and a must for Boston fans that cherished the Man and the game when it was a "game" not a business.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the "well versed" Williams fan.
Great book by John Underwood!
Those familiar with many Ted Williams books and articles will recognize some of the stories in the book, but anything with Ted talking "off the cuff" is great. The CD recording included with the book of Ted giving his opinions, experiences and thoughts is priceless! Mr. Underwood, if you read this you should release all of your Williams recordings on CD. I guarentee they'd be very popular!!

This should not be the first Ted Williams book you read. I suggest "My Turn at Bat" also by Underwood or "Ted Williams: An American Hero." by Leigh Montville as your first Williams read. ... Read more

This book is readable and concise. Physiology and pathophysiology are applied to each case study. However, the chest X-ray findings are not reproduced well in the figures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise and Easy
This is really a lovely book for clearing up concepts in pulmonary physiology. Dr West, one of the globally famous physiology author, integrated pulmonary pathology with the underlining physiology in this thin book. He tried to help students understand what goes wrong in numerous common lung and airway problems with the interesting cases he presented. As he pointed out in the preface, he intended to make this book as concise as possible in order to fit the modern cirriculum by sparing more time for students to deal with the expanding syllabus in molecular science!! ... Product Description
"There isn't a dull or conventional page, or an unlovely sentence in the book."—Scott Eyman, The Palm Beach PostFor most of his Broadway plays Tennessee Williams composed an essay, most often for The New York Times, to be published just prior to opening—something to whet the theatergoers’ appetites and to get the critics thinking. Many of these were collected in the 1978 volume Where I Live, which is now expanded by noted Williams scholar John S. Bak to include all of Williams’ theater essays, biographical pieces, introductions and reviews. This volume also includes a few occasional pieces, program notes, and a discreet selection of juvenilia such as his 1927 essay published in Smart Set, which answers the question “Can a good wife be a good sport?”

Wonderful and candid stories abound in these essays—from erudite observations on the theater to veneration for great actresses. In “Five Fiery Ladies” Williams describes his fascinated, deep appreciation of Vivien Leigh, Geraldine Page, Anna Magnani, Katharine Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor, all of whom created roles in stage or film versions of his plays. There are two tributes to his great friend Carson McCullers; reviews of Cocteau’s film Orpheus and of two novels by Paul Bowles; a portrait of Williams’ longtime agent Audrey Wood; a salute to Tallulah Bankhead; a political statement from 1972, “We Are Dissenters Now”; some hilarious stories in response to Elia Kazan’s frequent admonition, “Tennessee, Never Talk to An Actress”; and Williams’ most moving and astute autobiographical essay, “The Man in the Overstuffed Chair.”

Theater critic and essayist John Lahr has provided a terrific foreword which sheds further light on Tennessee Williams’ writing process, always fueled by Williams’ self-deprecating humor and his empathy for life’s nonconformists. ... Read more

Who doesn't enjoy walking through a William-Sonoma store? This book includes a wonderful variety of risotto recipes and is one of my favorites.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very solid like most of the series
Like all of the William Sonoma cookbooks I have (about 10) it is easy to use, informative the recipes work well and are relatively easy to make.
We love Risotto around my house and there several real crowd pleaser here that I make over and over.I also recommend the new version also with more good recipes. It is not a remake of this one but more recipes in a larger format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy Book!
This is a really good book about Risotto. The recipes range from light to deliciously heavy and creamy. There are also very basic instructions and tips for the beginning Risotto maker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have seen risotto prepared in many different ways, unfortunately there is only one way to properly go about the task. Arborio or Carnaroli rice depending on your choice requires a certain method to extract all of the creaminess from the rice while maintaining a good al dente texture. In this book, the author here has done a wonderful job of illustrating the proper way to produce a quality risotto. Nice photos to give you ideas as risotto leaves much room for experimentation once you have mastered the basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Illustrated, Delicious, Easy Recipes
Risotto is a wonderful, filling, nutritious meal and can be simple or sophisticated, served at family meals or dinner parties. (It also makes great left-overs!) Whether you're browsing or planning a menu, this book will fulfill your appetite. Each recipe is beautifully illustrated and presented on a separate page with easy-to-follow instructions. Several of the recipes I've tried have become family favorites. Just serve with a fresh baguette, and some can be considered one-dish meals. ... Read more

I was just speechless when I went over just the main theme song from this movie. I also bought the cd and I can say that John Williams truly out did himself with these works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Schindler Music Strikes deep
John Williams is one of the most gifted people that music has allowed us to be affected by. The process he takes to make his music is far from random. It is all carefully planed, and all built masterly to fit the moodof the film he's composing for. While nearly all of his music ismasterfully beautiful and touching, Schindler crosses the line. HowWilliams knows so much about Jewish music is beyond me, but the way heincorporates it into the score is amazingly touching. While I don't want togo too far, it could be said that the theme from Schindler's List coversall the hardships the country of Israel has had to go through until today. For a while just hearing the soundtrack was enough for me. But soon, I cameto the conclusion that I had to learn how to play it, how to make it happenunder my own power. And that's when I found this book. For anyone who wantsto feel emotions that they haven't felt since they were in 4th gradelearning about the Shoah, here it is. Sieze it. ... Read more
