Extractions: Board of Directors New London-Lake Sunapee Region Chamber of Commerce Minutes for July 2, 2002 As approved Aug. 6, 2002 In attendance were board members Dyke Shaw, Jack Diemar, Francetta Raymond, Cindy Walker, Debbie Sias, Aryn Hoke and Kevin Martin. Also in attendance were chamber members James Walker, Spec Bowers, Chip Steward, Sally Bourdon, John Augustine, Ellen Chandler, Mary Marzelli and Information Director Lorie McClory. Information guides and maps have been distributed. Mary Marzelli said New London and Sunapee are done; Warner and Newport are in the process. Dyke Shaw said some people are still confused about the Chamber Information Guides and the Mount Sunapee Magazine. The Mount Sunapee Magazines distributed in this area do not contain the Information Guides because the Information Guides are distributed locally. The magazines distributed out of state do have the Information Guides inserted. Lorie said the guides also went to the state Welcome Centers in Lebanon, Antrim and Sutton.

Extractions: behind the logo History, Background (Page 2 of 2) The Importance of Diversity The variety of programmes and services offered by the Jajarkot Permaculture Programme (JPP) continues to invite local participation from the villagers not only in Jajarkot, but in Surkhet and Banke districts also. People are realising what can be done when investments are made into local resources and when new but appropriate techniques are brought in from the outside. Training and Education Trainings are regularly performed at the Resource Centres and in situ at village sites. The Parima system (see above) is showing signs of success and a wide application. Trainees, including JPP staff, are able to view demonstrations now producing viable benefits on the earlier farms, such as fuel/fodder plantations (farms #1 and #2), fruit production, beekeeping, weaving, green manure cultivation, alley cropping, vegetable production (and associated systems of mulching, companion planting and waste water management, for example) and pit latrines. In addition, visiting farmers can train in these systems establishment and maintenance. Finally, resources of seed and seedling can be taken back to villagers homes where JPP staff can continue to oversee progress.

Extractions: DaimlerChrysler Award for Sculpture 2002 by Kathryn Smith Along with (rare) unanimous agreement on the choice of this year's winner of the DaimlerChrysler Award for Sculpture 2002 - Cape Town-based artist Jane Alexander - other commentary bandying about the smoker-filled foyer of the Indaba Hotel last Thursday went something like "yeah, and the food wasn't bad either - but what is that on the cover of the brochure?" A planar sculptural form bearing resemblance to a disjointed boat propeller (huh?) or perhaps elements used in car construction (more likely), the object seemed thankfully to exist only in the form of a 3D computer graphic. It certainly did not look like anything a self-respecting nominee for this prestigious and career-boosting art prize could muster. This is a prize to be coveted. DaimlerChrysler has invested substantially in South African arts and culture with two visual arts prizes and one prize for jazz having been awarded since 1999. They will extend this to cover drama, literature and dance. As their mandate states, "The DaimlerChrysler Award will enable the winner to pursue his or her artistic endeavors undisturbed and without any concern for material well-being for one year." The award will also finance exhibitions in Germany and South Africa that will be accompanied by a bilingual catalogue. The company will also grant winners a three-month stipend in Germany or the US for further study and research.
