Worth browsing, not buying
There's a lot of talk in this book but not much code. When it does show code examples, it comes with few comments. I was referred to this book after I read Tom Chritiansen's review that said good words about its use ofshared memory. I thought using shm in CGI programming is quite unusual andworth reading. But when I read the section(s), I find too much talk abouthow to manage a project and little explanation of the C/Perl program thatuses shm. This book may be good to managers not for programmers. ... The chapters are very uneven in understanding level
The introductory chapters to the various CGI elements are very good even though written 3 - 1/2years ago (thus previous to PerlEx).Some of the DOS screens needed a little introductory and conclusion text added to makethem meaningful in context so I just penned it onto the particular bookpage.However, when dealing with the CGI complexities, e. g. , statefulprogramming, even though these are the most complex examples in the book, Ikept looking for a different pedagogical approach that would make theexamples in the book meaningful and relevant in context.I found that Ihad to re-write some of the example .pl scripts in that particular chapterto have them match the expected output printed in the text.Perhaps asecond edition is overdue . . .

This book is awesome!
CGI Primer Plus for Windows gives the reader an excellent overview of CGI, Perl and developing interactive web content. I was able to develop interactive CGIs after reading only a few chapters of this book. I wouldrecommend this book and other books written by this author to everyone.

Good book but you will need to purchase a Perl book!
I like the concepts in the CGI Primer Plus for windows: I learned how to create an link generator, address book, email, and a survey interface usingthe book. The best feature about the 'CGI Primer Plus' is the number ofapplications in the book. The down side is the assumption the user knowsPerl.I purchased the 'Perl 5 by Example Book'; read the first eightchapters, and dove into the 'CGI Primer Plus' book. The author'sapplications inspired to create numerous of my own applications.I'm veryexcited by the books value in terms of ideas and methods to apply perl.My wish list is to have a CGI book design for sybperl, Oracle, or Informix. Creating Database applications would be very valueable.

Good starter but nothing to hold on to.
I liked the book when I first started cgi but once I learned cgi (from other sources and books) I never opened the book again.Its got examples and an attempt to teach you but it doesn't go into detail what each line ofcode does so you can have code there but no clue what you are doing withit.Now, I wouldn't even recommend it for starters.If you want someSIMPLE samples spend the money here or get it free of the internet.yourchoice.

One and probably only summary of CGI and CGM
Computer Graphics Interface (CGI) and Computer Graphics Metadata (CGM) were invented a while ago, take it: a long while ago!. But much of the industrial large graphical databases still use these protocols as their base of information. If you work with such data, e.g. for NC production, this book contains the most valuable information for the practice. These days CGI means mostly "Computer Generated Imaging" or another use in networks: Common Gateway Interface. This CGI in this book might be mostly a thing of a past, replaced by DirectX or OpenGL, but CGM still lives, foremost in the very much actively used WebCGM. WebCGM 2.1 was approved in year 2008. The web page of the consortium is cgmopen org. Take this book if you need information about the primary CGM standard for compatibility and proper interpretation. Excellent - Highly Recommended
I found this book to be a great introduction to both Perl and CGI programming. This book is genuinely trying to teach you, unlike some bookswhere the author is attempting to show you how clever he/she is. Alsoincludes useful examples, and the syntax reference library in the appendixis essential once you are experienced with Perl & CGI. I am verypleased I purchased this book and highly recommend it to anyone who wantsto be up and running with Perl CGI programming in the shortest possibleperiod.

No fat, full of info.
This book is very good as it not only teaches you how to write good CGI code for web pages but it also teaches you how to integrate your exisiting PERL scripts into it. I have had to contact Customer Support in regards toan error in the book and they advised me that the book was "designedfor Windows 95". So they could not answer the question.

Excellent tutorial for CGI/Perl
The book is excellent, but I noticed that one of the examples didn't work on my system(Win 98, Sambar Server, Perl 5).In chapter 2 and 3 it mentions and examines code that uses subroutines, but on my system itreturned a false value from the subroutine and an error.To correct thisput1; directly below the entire subroutine 'sub name {subroutine code}1;'Thanks to Amazon's Perl forDummies for pointing out that workaround. I would recommend both books as complements of each other.Perl forDummies describes in more detail with less example, and Perl CGIProgramming has detailed examples with little explaination.

If you want to learn perl, this book it's the best.. But if you want to train yourself programming CGI, this book it's the best too. Excellent documentation, with a lot of examples and screen shots. Short but sweet
This 260 page book does what it needs... teaches you Perl from scratch and covers all the basic topics you need to write the scripts explained: write a web based clock, a basic page template parser (something that all programmers need to use more), processing forms (without using some large and slow 3rd party library), create a form based emailer webpage, a search engine, an app to grab other webpages to store them in a database and to search them, and finally a catalog/e-commerce script.This is a good starter book to go from nothing to intermediate programmer without feeling overwelmed with the material read.

Great for Entry Level Perl Programming on UNIX

you should already know before you buy this book.

True Genius
I am impressed with the poise and genius of the author. He obviously understands computers more than the next person. And to have attended highschool while writing such a book takes great organization and timemanagement skills. Needless to say this author is a role model. To have hisintelligence at such a young age! I wish I was that gifted.

A good book, but not enough actual source code.
I was very happy to find the extra book mounted onthe CD, Perl 5 in 21 days, but the actual book itself would describe general concepts without actually giving enough concrete examples of how to do it.This book is definitely intended for those who are already fairly experienced with programming in Perl.Also, the author could stand to be a little less dry and his code should be more readable (indentation and white space).

Fine, but could have been 50% shorter.
When I finished reading this book I realized there wasn't much to learn about CGI. In fact, the first thing I did with my computer after reading was learning Perl with the accompanying HTML documents.
You will also be able to learn Perl with the examples in the book, but some of them are not too useful.
Anyway, I had to buy it to realize about these facts (or, at least, what I think are facts), so I am not disappointed at all.

Miracles - no, Solutions Yes
If you do not already understand the basics of PERL programming, web server operations, and CGI, this book might help you and it may just confuse you.If you do already understand these things pretty well, then the book is both enlightening and entertaining.I downloaded the unix software first, and had it running under apache on Windows 98 in about 5 minutes.I was so impressed with the quality and flexibility of the code, I decided to buy the book just to show my support, and pick up the helpful hints and insightful commentary that Gunther, et al have on the web, ecommerce, and programming in general.Well, well done!

Need more setup information for Windows 95
I think that this book could be great if they can include how can you make the setup for the different plataforms (W95,Unix). Also the free versions of Perl can be on the CD. You don't have support for any question that youhave, and I think you won't have it. I want to share information in how tosetup this program with Windows 95 users.

Don't expect this book/software to work miracles.
The book claimed that you could download the latest software from the website and that there is a windows version as well as the unix version available for download.After not being able to find the windows versionfor download I sent email to the author inquiring where I could find thewindows version.I was then emailed back with a long email claiming thatthey were very busy and that if I wanted support I would have to pay$300.00!I then emailed them back saying that I only bought the stupidbook and only wanted to know where the windows download was. I then gotemail stating how to get the unix version working on the windows platform.

Great Free Code
This book is for anyone who knows some PERL and wants to save days or weeks coding a shopping cart/ordering system. It could most accurately be described as a detailed, line by line description of a complex (but NOToverly complicated) free software application which is provided on thebook's cd-rom.

Just remember that you must know some basic PERL and havealready set up a few simple websites on a UNIX server, otherwise you willbe lost. If you want to learn PERL, this is as good a project as any, butremember that you will be thumbing through a PERL book at the same time. Ifyou are an intermediate level PERL hacker, you should have the basic demoapplication up and running in a couple of hours, max.

The program isvery good and extremely easy to customize to your exact needs. The book ismarred by some typos, inconsistancies and embarrasing grammatical errors,but is an absolutely invaluable resource for anyone wanting an excellent,cheap and flexible PERL based CGI shopping cart on their website.

NOT for beginners!!
The title said "Instance CGI/Perl" so I bought it thinking I could do it instantly, being a complete beginner. No way.

This book is designed for people who already have an understanding or some knowledge of cgi already. I can't even make it to page two and I go cross-eyed. It is an excellent book when it comes to modifying scripts and getting into perl stuff and will probably come in handy AFTER I learn how to do it in the first place.

If you are an advanced-level user, then you will probably GREATLY benefit from this book. It has unbelievable advice and detailed instructions on web applications used in cgi.

But to be honest, I didn't understand a single word of it.

Misleading Title
I stumbled upon this book while looking for a web application framework that would have all the basic components I would need (i.e. authentication, session management, form processing, templating, database ...) so that I could focus solely on coding the application logic without reinventing the wheel.

Surprisingly, this book documents a powerful and seemingly complete Perl-based web application framework called Extropia.
The architecture is built in OO and has every core component I need.I downloaded the code from their Web site and simply copied it into my cgi-bin directory and found that all of their ready-made examples ran without any tweaking to my web server config!
The examples include applications like Inventory Manager, Bug Tracker, Web Store, Address Book...
A novice user can get these applications up and running with little effort.The applications are fully configurable.
An advanced user who understands the concepts of OO Perl can create some really powerful applications.Wherever functionality is missing, just override or create your own custom method.

I followed many threads in the newsgroups regarding the subject of Perl-based web application frameworks, and never ran across the name "Extropia" before.I consider Extropia and this book to be a best kept secret!

Imagine building a fully functioning issue tracking database that performs some custom pre and post processing in just a couple days?!

Although I can see how the authors are targeting novice CGI developers because the framework is designed to be easily configurable for novice users...I think the real power of Extropia is more for the advanced web application developer who is tired of reinventing the wheel and is looking for an excellent set of reusable components.

Just my opinion.

A Real Mess
This was the third book I bought to help me get started with CGI stuff.It was not very helpful, when I started learning. I was using it in an online class.Since that early learning experience, I forced myself tofigure out cgi instalation.I now have many scripts on my site. RecentlyI wanted a hidden counter, and I remembered there was one in this book.Iwent back to the book and tried to install it.And what a mess.There isno coordination between the CD and the book.The book has no set outline,forconfiguration. And there are errors that will make you think your anidiot.Do your self a favor and just start downloading scripts from theweb and learning the difference between a path on your server and a pathwith a URL in the browser. Maybe another book will help, but stay awayfrom this one, oh and I'll but this one up for auction, here at amazon, andgood luck!

An excellent book that delivers what it promises.
Drag and Drop CGI?Sounds too good to be true?Well, it IS true! An excellent book that delivers what its subtitle promises.If you're looking to enhance your website with form validation, form processing, searchengines, visitor counters and even an online store (amongst other goodies)then this is the book for you.

The book assumes moderate computerskills on the part of the reader but is in no way overly technical.Inaddition, the authors provide step by step support through each script, howeach script works and how you might implement each script in the'real-world'.

What makes Drag and Drop CGI particularly commendable isthat it delivers on its promise: nine fully-operational, fully-tested,robust, commercial-quality scripts (including the aforementioned on-linestore) that solve real-world problems and not just 'demos', 'teasers' or'examples' masquerading as fully functional code.For this reason alone,it's worth making room on your bookshelf for this book.

Not for a newbie to the web. This book took me from static html web pages to dynamic cgi web pages with secure on line shopping.Well worth the money I spent, plus all the scripts on the CD are a big bonus.Plain, wellwritten english, with just enough tech stuff to get me by and help me askright questions when I needed tech support from my server. Don't waste your money!!

First, I must admit that I only skimmed the initial sections on web philosophy and design.Other reviewers seemed put off by the depth of those sections.Though I have only built small web sites so far, I very much welcome having a source of knowledge to ensure my larger developments do not look like a poorly organized beginner's site.The design sections are really more than you bargained for, and they don't take away from the excellent discussions and reference material on HTML and CGI.The HTML section in particular let's the reader know which version of HTML supports each tag, so browser compatibility can be ensured.Simple samples that focus on the tags being learned are provided.The book is very comprehensive; hopefully, beginners won't find it too overwhelming.This book is highly recommended.

The WORST book on HTML you can ever imagine
You won't find anything worth reading until you are 500 pages into the book and that is not a joke. The first 10 chapters is all useless garbage the authors threw together to get a big book. Those chapters cover planning and are written by people that don't even understand the word plan. To help the authors out, here is what Websters dictionary says the word plan means "n. a scheme of action or a drawing made to represent the top view." Hey, that's a single sentance. I just saved you 500 pages of reading.

The remaining 500 pages have dubious value. I mean if you've never heard of HTML and Web publishing, you may want to consider this book. HOWEVER you won't understand a word the authors have to say. I say you can do much better elsewhere.

Lifeline to Admins handling old networks
I have had several clients that rely on NT servers, and this is the only book I've found that deals with Perl specifically in this environment. Very Helpful!!

Solid Perl Instruction
For those of us using legacy systems, this is the most comprehensive book I've found (and I've been searching and serching...) to deal with NT and Perl when it comes to running Intranet and Internet apps. Well writtne for the beginner and the expert who needs a handy refeence to jump between Unix and NT.

Only book for NT and Perl
This is the only book I've read that bridges the gap betwen the UNIX world of Perl and the Microsoft hell of NT. Not as indepth on CGI as I would have liked, but Perl explainations and examples are bang on.

Forget it for learning cgi on NT
There are two kind of books for learning PERL for cgi.

The first kind are those that are written by smug UNIX weenies (Teach Yourself CGI Programming with PERL in a Week)in who think every one in the world is (orshould be) developing on a UNIX server. At best, they admit that NT serversexist, but don't tell you how to program on them.

The second type are theones who promise to teach you cgi for NT servers using PERL, but end upbeing a primer on PERL with a single chapter overiew of cgi.That is whatthis book is.The first 185 pages are so are an overview of PERL.Thenthere are a couple of CGI chapters.On page 30 it states . . ."Thereis much more to the CGI than is covered in this book.For moreinformation, on the CGI, there is the e-mail mailing list . . ."

Unfortunately, all the books on PERL seem to be written by UNIXweenies and I have none to recommend.

Brilliant - but not just for NT

Are you kidding me?
Visual Basic is absolutely the wrong language to write CGI applications.The overhead required will drag your server down to a crawl.

That said, the book itself is fairly well written with lots of useful information.If you are a CGI programmer in general (C, Delphi or PowerBASIC) then there is some really useful information here.Particularly if you are a PowerBASIC programmer, since PowerBASIC can compile stand-alone executables to just a few 'k-bytes'.

"Deliver CGI applications easily" says the cover of this book.After spending a whole weekend with the book, I could not get past chapter 2.Every example I tried generated confusing error messages.I'm actuallyusing VB 6 instead of 5, and nothing in this 500+ page book suggestswhether or not this is allowed.A quick look at the index tells you it istoo short for a 500 page book.One of the most popular CGI applications isa counter, however, the word counter does not even appear in the index. Only 2 entries are under the letter "B" in the index. That's whatI'd expect from a 20 page book. This book is written in a language thatonly someone who already knows the subject matter could possiblyunderstand.

A must for any BASIC programmer interested in CGI
First, I should note that using Visual Basic for a web server application is pathetic.Each instance of the application requires a minimum of 4 megs of RAM, so using it on a high-traffic site is suicidal.

That said, thebook and the code in the book are very good.Ported to C, Delphi orespecially PowerBASIC, you can't go wrong.The book also does a fairlygood job of covering the CGI spec.

My suggestion, buy the book and go getyourself a copy of PowerBASIC so that you can createtrue CGI apps that take only a few K instead of megabytes.
