Excellent for the C++ programmer who wants to learn NT/MFC.
This book represents an exemplary survey for the C++ programmer on how todevelop for Windows NT. It starts with an excellent survey of NTarchitecture then proceeds with several chapters on an overview of theMicrosoft Foundation Classes (MFC). The strength of this work is that eachchapter is succinct and relatively complete. Since MFC is so rich withfeatures, it is extremely difficult for a programmer coming from anotherenvironment (i.e. UNIX) to see the NT landscape. This book is outstandingin this regard. After going over a chapter in this book, one can approachthe Microsoft documentation without feeling intimidated.

Not for beginners, lacks vital information reguarding FAT32.
The book needs to be updated to include FAT32 as well as new technologies since it's release in June of 97'.The book is being used as a Text by the Tech school I'm attending.The combination of the book being outdated andan unknowledgable instructor caused an entire networking class to waistfour, five hour classes (20 hrs;1/2 a work week) trying to install NT WS& NT server as single OSs.The book claims to be "for everyuser" which includes the "beginner" but I find that it doesnot give enough detail when explaining setups and configurations.If youare a beginner this is not the only NT book you will need unless you havethe help of knowledgable peers.Our pages are also coming out of everybook purchased by the school.For the sake of others I sincerly hope thepublisher will update soon.If they are going to say it is for beginnersthey must give more detail.

Extremely Good Reference.
After using this book for about a year I've decided it is the one I turn to the most for understanding NT 4 Server.

The author is quite articulate and does a fine job of presenting the material.Hopefully, he will havemore books coming out real soon.

I find that I can quickly drill down tothe topic and subject I'm interested in, and not get bogged down in uselesstheory or 99,000 ft. level overviews that lack substance (like thoseunleashed books).

I have taped the book binding for the 3rd time just soI can keep using it.

Great book for both beginners and software professionals
This book took me from knowing nothing about thread programming to writingprofessional mulithreaded programs very quickly. If you are tasked to writemultithreaded programs under Windows NT (like I was) this book will giveyou a flying start.

You can hit the ground with your feet running...
I found this book to be the best primer for someone who has not done any multithreaded programming.The examples are concise and straight to the point.I read this book in two days .This book was very similar to an Operating Systems course that I had taken where I learned about concurrent programming; e.g., the "Reader-writers" and the "Dinning Philosphers" problems, deadlocks/starvation, race conditions, and how to synchronize events, etc.. In a world where getting information/samples to show "how to" do multithreaded programming, this book will give you a starting point to build on."Highly recommended".

Fundamentally Flawed Examples
This book offers good solutions, overall. But it's advice is ocasionally flawed fatally.Within the first couple chapters, for example, the authors write all of their examples to call TerminateThread(), which is a fatal and unforgivable mistake that results in nothing more than unstability. Worse, throught the book, they code threads that use the C runtime libraries but start the threads with the CreateThread() API--that causes the runtime libraries to not correctly initialize or shutdown in all cases, and that results in memory leaks and unstability.While the authors clearly treat deadlocks and thread programming models, their implementations are still mortally flawed.A score of 10 for great abstract descriptions plus a score of 1 for terribly poor implementations and samples results in a score of five.

Excellent book on multithreading
A very well written book on multithreading.Though this book focuses on NT multthreading model, it will serve as a good reference for people working on UNIX as well. It is written in a very simple language which makes the reading very easy and interesting.Coming from UNIX background, I would have liked to have a more elaborate comparision of NT thread interface with UNIX (such as Solaris) one.But in no way this missing feature diminishes the value of this book. A must have!!

Great reference manual if you are still programming NT 3.5
Beware of this text, despite it's recent publication date of 1996 it only covers Windows NT 3.5 multithread API. If this is what you are looking for then purchase this book! ... Read more

Must-have reading for Release Engineers
I received a copy of this book from the manager of a Release Engineering team many years ago.Not only did I find the book an easy read, but it also exemplified the mentality that *needs* to be instilled in Software Developers - "don't break the build!!".

The image of Dave Cutler roaming the hallways looking for the miscreant who checked in bad code was wonderful - and the anecdotes about how the Release Engineers were empowered to make incremental updates in order to ensure that the build must go on ("the show must go on") is particularly enlightening.

Now, over 10 years after having read the book myself, I find it helpful to share this with team members, in order to demonstrate what a totally committed team can accomplish, working in unison, but with a firm oversight to not be a SHOW-STOPPER.

What everybody else said and "WOW" to go along with it
I must say, I just finished this book and it was fantastic.From the consumer side, I have sat and wondered many times what happens during the production of an OS.I remember the drum beat running up to Win '95 and I guess that will be the next one I hunt down.This book is a HISTORICAL DRAMA.If you didn't know the outcome you would be held in suspense!At times, I had to remind myself that it DID SHIP!

The David Cutler part of the story is enthralling.Since he is so reclusive, it is remarkable that he would even be interviewed.In the back of the book it list who was interviewed and it must have been his children and ex-wife(s) in the list.Eventually, a biography of Cutler (whether authorized or not) would be a fantastic gift to the community.

Congrats to the author on a fantastic read.I fully recommend it.But, it left me with a question that may never be able to be answered: If a project such as this were to be taken on today with modern programming tools (IDE, Internet, ect, ect) how long would it have taken and how much better/worse would the end product have been? If you take Microsoft's new approach to Visual Studio, the team approach, you might would think they built a product like that because of what they learned in projects such as NT.How many project hit brick walls, like Cairo, or as mentioned in the book "Microsoft's first in house build from scratch database system." This is just two projects that fell to the cutting room floor. How many more could there have been that would have "made it" to "ship mode" if modern tools and communications were introduced?

Great read!
I kept hearing about this book on my podcasts and finally checked it out. I was not disappointed. The author did an excellent job of interviewing dozens of MS employees and writing a riveting account of the creation of NT. Highly recommended.

You get a feel for how it's done.....
This is a fast read in a very casual style.It doesn't cover any code, but gives you a feel for the characters that come together to accomplish large projects.For anyone who uses this stuff in their PC, it's a worthwhile read.

Great book!
It's really a wonderful book! If you are a software developer trying to figure out how the big projects are done, or if you are just someone who is trying to figure out what is inside a software developer mind, go and read it.

For software developer:
Don't forget, it's a book written by a non-technical person. Sometimes, the writer tries with no success to explain the difference between C and C++, the function of the memory manager and other ones. The first chapter of the book is just terrible. He starts telling the NT's manager history, since he was a child. But don't give up. The book will get really interesting after the second chapter.

Favorite - Favorite - Favorite!
I can't keep a personal copy because it is such a great Bible I keep giving mine up! It is such a great way to get the shy or seeking into God's Word. Every time I go back to the local bookstore to replace mine they have to keep reordering them because they can't keep them on the shelf, and I am having to resort to ordering them in bulk.

I am a fan of KJV and NKJV for indepth study of God's Word, especially if analyzing the original language. But for daily devotions, this NLT Bible can't be beat because it flows really well and makes it easy to read while being true to the original meaning. The highlighted promises in this NLT version provide a special means of allowing the Word of God to speak to you in a most personal way.

Great study/carry anywhere Bible.
This bible is a very straightforward copy of the NLT version. The NLT version is the best contemporary language translation in my opinion as it doesn't try to neuter God the Father, or make the bible PC.It has a very modern, conversational tone that has helped me see many new insights on passages I had read 50 times in other translations. It is great for carrying around.Since I tend to be very busy, I don't have a set time to read my bible and this one allows me to read it when time avails.I will grab 5 minutes here, an hour there, etc.This bible doesn't have lots of notes or explanations of everything, but I find it refreshing as it allows me to not be persuaded by some other persons interpretation/bias of the given passage. ... Perfect size for my purse
I have back problems and my regular Bible is a bit bulky to carry everywhere I go but I do love to read scripture on the go.This New Testament is the perfect size to always carry in my purse.Unlike some pocket New Testaments, the font is the perfect size.I also love the NLT translation which is my preferred translation.The 50 page introduction and notes are wonderfully written and address questions and concerns some skeptics may have.This book is perfect for a new Believer.Some may not like that it is in single column format instead of two column format, but for on the go reading this is fine.It also does not have the words of Christ in red but again, this is fine.The price is perfect so that if it gets mangled in my purse, it's no worry

Now for why it didn't get the fifth star.:'(It doesn't include Proverbs and Pslams which most pocket New Testament books do feature.I really love to have these two books with me when I'm not at home.So maybe if they come out with a new edition they could add those?Then it would be PERFECT!!!

This is our choice of Bible's to give away to people who are seeking the truth or for those that we hope to encourage to seek the truth. The introduction is well written, it is geared toward those that are seeking the truth, hence the title, "The Seekers Bible". It is only the New Testament, we find this to be good for people who do not know Jesus, it's an introduction to the One who gave His life so that we could have true and eternal life. Best Small-Set Commentary of the Whole Bible on the Market!
When I was looking for a single volume or small-volume set (3 volumes or less) on the entire Bible to complement my library of individual commentaries, I wasn't in the market for just any volume or set. I looked at Matthew Henry's, Clarke's, and Lange's commentaries, to name just a few. Without question, the single volume and 3-volume set by Jamieson, Fausset and Brown is the best. A close runner-up would be John MacArthur's single-volume New Testament Commentary and the single-volume Old and New Testament Commentary.

Scholarly, yet still readable, the Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary, though written in the 19th Century, is still clear, fresh, and relevant today. A great set for the layperson, student and pastor alike. My 3-volume set is published by Hendrickson Publishers and is beautifully bound and the printed pages are clear and crisp. And very important to me during my search, and unlike a lot of the more recently published thick study sets, each volume lies open and flat for easy referencing. A great set.

Jamieson, Fausset & Brown's Bible Commentary
A good price. Haven't have a chance to read it much, but seems like a nice book.Naturally, more condensed than a set of commentaries would be, but still very helpful in my studies.Would recommend.

Very helpful and concise
As another reviewer said, I find myself reaching for this commentary more and more. Even though it originally came in a 3 volume set (now a 1 volume), I would not consider this an exhaustive commentary. It is concise, not just in the content covered, it is also concise in the actual exposition and phrasing. I mention this because many of the older commentaries, although excellent and more exhaustive, still tend to be too wordy for my taste. And occasionally, the less the writer grasped a subject, the more wordy they tended to be.

The JFB often accurately and succinctly explains a passage even when Calvin, Gill and Clarke are too verbose, vague, or on occasion, even misconstrue the passage altogether. Even where the JFB commentary agrees with Calvin or Gill for example, JFB says in 1 or 2 sentences what takes them 2 or 3 paragraphs. I realize that was the norm when those commentaries were written, and that approach has its place, but since JFB is easier to understand and more succinct, I find it more useful.

Don't get me wrong, I use and will continue to use all of the commentaries above, but as I said, I am searching the JFB more and more. You can find any of them online free of charge. I even have Clarke and JFB on my Dell Axim. Can't beat that.

Recently I have been studying the Book of Job and I have found JFB to be very insightful. It has given excellent exposition of the passages, but has also been very helpful in understanding the culture, customs and traditions behind the text. I do not believe for a second that one must understand all the history and traditions of Bible times to get the spiritual meaning of God's Word, however, the fact is that understanding some of the background can really cast some light on certain passages.

JFB is like Smith's Bible Dictionary. It is not the most comprehensive, but since it is more functional and easier to use, you use it more than the others, therefore, it is the most helpful.

Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown's Commentary on the whole Bible
This book was hard to find. You were the only place that would get it for me. This is the second time you helped me get what I was looking for.Remember the word BIBLE means: "Basic Information Before Leaving Earth".

Years ago I picked this gem up on a discount shelf simply because I wanted a complete commentary and could afford nothing else. This is THE SERVICE book
If you want to understand and write professional Windows Service programs, buy this book. You will find good C++ examples and best practices in Windows Service writing.

Best of its kind
The book is comprehensive, clear, and easy to read.The source code works and it is easy to follow (the code is available on-line.)The discussion on ATL COM servers is truly enlightening and by itself worth the price of the book.If you are writing an ATL COM server this book is a must, especially if it will be a multi-threaded server.

From the beginning the author has the attitude that NT services are easy to understand and his "prophecy" becomes self-fulfilling throughout the book.The book is well organized and it pays special attention to service design and usage patterns.

Also notice that the book does not cover hardware drivers.By the way, do read the previous review titled "One of a kind" as it gives very useful tips on installing ATL services (using "myservice.exe -Service") and housing COM objects in a service; I have not found that information in the book.

One of a kind
No other source compares to the quality and convenience of Professional NT Services, either in book form or on the Internet.The only other way to get this information is to read sample code on MSDN, which is a less-than-optimal way to learn the subject.

Professional NT Services describes the issues involved in writing services, such as security and threading, and provides sample code every step of the way.The book also details how to build a service with ATL and even tells you how to improve ATL's implementation.It even talks a bit about Microsoft Transaction Server (now part of COM+).

Here are three bits of information that I discovered elsewhere that I wish were more evident in the book -

1. If you create an ATL service, the default registation code registers the EXE as a COM server instead of a service -- run "myservice.exe -Service" to register the service.

2. The easiest way for multiple clients to be able to use a single COM instance that's housed in the service is to implement the COM class using DECLARE_CLASSFACTORY_SINGLETON.This is your typical "server" pattern.

3. Clients that want to connect to COM objects housed in the ervice should use CLSCTX_SERVER in CoCreateInstance

Perhaps this information is buried in the book somewhere, but I didn't find it.At any rate, without this book, I wouldn't have known where to start.

Finally, for all its great qualities, the book needs to be revised for Windows 2000.It mentions some new features of "NT5" but I wonder how accurate this information really is.

Right on target!
This book addresses all the issues related to such complex problems as NT Services. The author explains them in very great details, and makes you understand how all this works. The sample code works and you can use theclasses from the book to start coding NT Services very fast.The author isvery talented in explaining difficult concepts. Funny enough, this book hasthe best explanation on MSMQ, as well as apartments. As an alternative tothe classes provided in this book, Irecommend the CodeGuru NT Service C++wizard written by Joerg Koenig. But even with a wizard, it is good to knowhow all this works.

Where's W2K?

Not Perfect but compared to the others - THE BEST
I decided to review all of the registry books, after I had worked with them by my side for several months. I bought this books along with Tim Daniel's Book and Rob Tidrows. While this books was excessive at pointswith many "tedious unecessary" entries, the mere fact that it isso comprehensive allows it to stand out as the premier reference on theregistry. I am extremely impressed with the exception that a books of thisnature deserves a better index.

WOW!!!
This book has almost too many references but it is good. Only 1 weakness. Hard to follow the organization in some places. But overall this is remarkable!!!

Excellant Book!A must reference for NT users
I've reviewed nearly every book on the Win32 registry and my biggestcomplaint has been a lack of a good reference to the registry.Finally, abook comes along to answer my needs as both a network admin and aprogrammer.And best of all, the complete database from the book isavailable on the CDROM in a searchable format.

I have only one complaint. It doesn't include Windows 95 or 98.Most of the registry entries applyto Win95/98 equally as they do NT, but many others do not.The bookdoesn't tell you which do or don't.And it doesn't include anything whichis Win95/98 specific.Of course, to do so, they'd have to add another 300pages which is impractical.Perhaps a volume two?

To be a good NT Administrator you must have a good reference for the registry. This is a good one. Packed with info, you'll learn something just about every page. Warning-Don't try to read it cover to cover.

5 star audio - 4 star mp3 tags
Pros
- Good clear audio - doesnt need volume boosted like some other audio bibles
- Unobtrusive dramatisation - often completely absent in the OT non-narrative books
- Voice easy to listen to, not trying too hard to sound 'holy' ie a couple of octaves lower than normal!
- only about 4.03GB

- the mp3 tags on several of the books are inconsistent with the others. There is a minor problem with 1 & 2 Chronicles (no book order number) and on 1 & 2 Corinthians the chapters arent listed on the tags, only on the file names (so the chapter numbers disappear on import to iTunes). This then needs tweaked manually.

All in all a very good product - I took one star off for the tags because it took a while to get things they way I wanted. Since it is marketed as an mp3 version, this should have been a priority to get right.

I have nothing else to add to the other reviews. I have read dozens (honest!) of NT books. This one ranks as one of the best.

You can't get your money out fast enough for ths one!
I had occasion to go through portions of this book again recently and could not help but be amazed, again, at how complete and information packed it is. Not only does it cover everything you REALLY need to know about NTnetworking but Tony writes in a wonderfully easy style that makes digestingall the deep tidbits--and there are a lot of those--easy.

The previousreviewer who said that this book is not long enough is right on. When youfinish the book you will be amazed at what you did NOT know and want theauthor to keep telling you.

We can only hope Tony revamps this book forWindows 2000. If you run NT networks this book is a must have. It is alsoan excellent companion to studying for many of the MCSE tests becauseyou'll disocver how things REALLY work.

Without a doubt one of the best networking and NT-centric networking books I have read. Tony covers all the bases, with an emphasis on NT relevant areas, and uncovers a number of gothcha's in NT that can save you fromlosts of frustration. Even with Windows2000 this book will be useful as agreat primer on Windows TCP/IP networking.

Love it!

Wonderful little KJV New Testament
This book is very small, only a little larger than a credit card and very thin too. It is more compact and of considerably better craftsmanship than the old hardcover miniature NT's of years past. The red lettering has a bit of an orange tint, but the paper used is very good quality. While the writing is a bit small, this book isn't quite so intimidating when used for quick preaching (because it is so small). A great gift to strangers and hitchhikers.

Due to the voice only 3 stars
Hi,
day by day i need two hours in my car to drive to work. so the time could be used to listen to the bible. I am not a native speaker but I was fascinated by the New Living Translation - very clear translated also to non native speakers. So i ordered the audio version. Starting with Matthew soon i was very disappointed. I expected a clear voice - but this voice sounds not clear - toomuch deep vibrations and to much American styled. Even my daughter which is able to translate immediately every text of English songs had problems to follow the reading. Additionally it should be a little bit slower.
So one of the best English translation cannot light up due to the voice used.
It's a pity.

Bible reading is accurate but I don't like the voice
The voice of this cd (by Mike Kellog) is a little bit too dramatic for me and instead of focusing on Scripture I am distracted by his voice.I give it 3 stars because at least it is the Word of God on CD but not 5 stars because I don't like the voice.I know some people love his voice but I sure wish I'd listened to him before I bought this CD.

Nebulous
This book does teach one how to use PSPICE. However, one cannot learn a computer application PURELY by example. First, the fundamentals must be taught and THEN examples. For instance, before doing circuits with AC Analysis such as op-amps and BJT's, I must first discuss the overall AC features of PSPICE such as AC vs. Transient Analysis, and then show this difference using example circuits. The author, however, jumps too quickly into it, and so the reader is left plugging in parameters he/she have no idea about. Buy this book AFTER you learn PSPICE elsewhere. Otherwise, you're wasting your money. I'm still looking for such a book.

excellent introduction to excellent software
The free "evaluation" version of PSpice is excellent software, but does not come with any manuals, and the help file built in is ofteninsufficient to understand the powerful options available. This text leadsthe user through all of the features of PSpice and Probe in a very clearway, with screen shots at every step, explaining everything left out of the'eval' help file.It includes version 8 of PSPice, many files used in thebook, and the MicroSIM reference manuals.Though the book is expensive,having the CD avoids a very long download of PSpice, which is worthsomething too.Many examples, from trivial DC circuits to complexdigital/analog mixed circuits, are given as examples.

Marc Herniter's Schematic Capture Using MicroSIm PSpice for Windows 95/98/NT is an excellent tutorial for people who don't have even a slightest clue of what PSpice is. The presentation of materials isexcellent, although sometimes boring by explaining very basic Windowsgeneral application instructions, like how to maximize and minimizewindows. The end all be all to introducing networks to any newbie!
I feel that this book is essential to have in any small business to large business library.From the glossary of terms to the picture layout forumit enables any worker to be able to access needed info for daily duties andthe inevitalble trouble shooting!!

Good for those who are just starting!
Those who are complaining that this book doesn't contain enough "meat" should remember that this book is meant only to get a basic grasp of terms and concepts and that other "meatier" bookswill be required to expand your knowledge.As a NEW NT4 NetworkAdministrator, I appreciate the non-technical jargon and that they don't gotoo indepth.I learned what I needed to start...now onto those"techie" books!!

Lots of concept, not much application
As a new administrator, I found the basics on network layout and topography interesting. I didn't however find much to sink my teeth into. The book will mention using a certain feature of NT, but then won't tellyou how to actually use it. Little or no meat on these bones. How bout somereal nuts and bolts of "this is how you do..." and a little less"we love Microsoft" and "use tape backups" to give me atru reference guide and not a conceptual overview?

ONLY, ONLY for Zero experience, Zero contact beginners
The first twelve chapters are repetitive to the point of nausea and read like a Microsoft sales brochure.Chapter 13 starts to be helpful and that's about as good as it gets.This book is good as a networking concepts basic NT overview only.This is not a "How to" book in any sense and God help the poor sole who may have tried to install NT from chapter nine.I especially like the hints to make sure you do this (you did do this, right?) at the end of the chapters, after it would have been too late.This one is not in the same class as the other "Dummies" books.

I bought the "Windows NT for dummies" book and was incredibly disappointed.It was written for the person who had never seen a computer before, and barely touched on networking!When I saw this one, I almost passed it by because of the other one.I'm glad I didn't!This book is a great start for networking!It takes the time to get a good foundation going, and then it builds on it.The basics of networking are explained clearly and this book doesn't treat you as if you'd had years of experience in networking.At the same time, it doesn't treat you like you've just discovered what electricity is either (like the other book).Great book! ...
