Ok for a "get your feet wet" book.
I stumbled on this book while cleaning out a cube and gave it a read.Obviously, this is a dated book.

Overall, it's an ok very basic introduction to Perl. However, it could create some bad programing habits so it should not be viewed as a resource for building core skills nor should you consider it a reference book.

Probably it's biggest value was that it showed how to do things in NT.But there are many resources for that now.

I was surprised that it attempted to talk about object oriented programing and CGI in 2 chapters.These topics have filled books.

So what is the value of this book?Well.If you have little money, then it's ok. Just remember to use strict and use warnings in the examples. Those two will save you grief and start you with a good programing habit. Don't take the book as gospel. Use it as a way to see some examples as what Perl can do.

After you read the book, look for the Perl docs and some sites like the perlmonks.That will get you on your way and in time you will see this book would not serve as a reference book.

Awesome
This book is a very quick and organized way to get up and going in Perl.By the end of day 7 (day seven will take more than a day if you do it right) you will have a good Perl foundation.

I have the Camel book that I go to from time to time (Camel has more humor and more technical content), but I use this book as my primary reference because of it's easy layout.

If you serious about Perl, also buy the Camel book as a deeper secondary reference.

Better organized that Larry's famous book
This book is better organized than Larry's famous book and it is easier to find information in it.

It is a great reference work and tutorial.

Covers material, but better know programming.
The first impression is the large number of typos in the code.It seems to work well for teaching 'what' works in Perl, but totally skips any 'why' structure.It comes off as an infinite number of special exceptions.Someadvice, such as in the Pattern Matching chapter is just plan wrong.Seemsto have slipped out without being editted.

Wonderful, wonderful Reference/amazing beginner's Guide too
The attention paid in this book on IP Itself is worth praising, too many books hand you too little of everything to be of any real use. I have found this to be superior to the Oreilly book, even though that is a fine book in itself. I have read Comer's books on IP itself, and no wonder its the yardstick in IP books, that of course gets a little too detailed or abstract interms of "what can I use now" for some. Karanjit nails the issueof IP and NT with authority and precision for a reader on a beginner tomedium level. Unless you want to really get into hardcore IP, or even ifyou want to, this book is great as a good "getting started" Guideand also as a confidence builder for someone new at this, given that NT isshowing up everywhere, the reader can try the small utilities as she goesto see what all this on paper is about in real life. Looking forward to its2000 Edition.

Not nearly as good as the O'Reilly book
I saw the mixed reviews on this book and went over and checked the ones on O'Reilly's Windows NT TCP/IP Network Administration by Hunt & Thompson.I didn't want to buy both so I went down to B&N at the mall and sat onthe floor reading through them. The O'Reilly book is much better. This oneis a typical New Riders book. In other words, not as as good as theO'Reilly. I wonder if all the anonymous reviews for this one were reallywritten by the author. This isn't really a horrible book, but if theO'Reilly book deserves 5 stars this one only deserves one.

Great Book!
Too bad there isn't a book like this for all of the MCSE exams. It's concise but detailed enough to give you all the info you need to pass the exam.

Good for testers
I found the book to be a good exam reference. Unattended installations are really nailed as is troubleshooting.However, the coverage of RAS is cursory and network monitoring was not even included in the topics.

It isbest suited for test takers alone so I would have reservations for anyonebuying it as a blanket reference guide for NT WKSN.

Great book on Performance Monitor
I work in Technical Support for a major backup software vendor. I love this book. It points out the same thing I point out to customers. Make sure your hardware is set right then you can check NT. Also great advice on NTPerformance Monitor. Put this book on your NT troubleshooting shoppinglist. P.S. Excellent Work!
A friend of mine recommended this book to me several years ago.Uponreading it, he went from a job as a roofer to an MCSE professional makingsignificantly more money.I bought and read it, and was amazed how Heywoodwas able to explain very complicated concepts in a very understandable way. I achieved MCSE status as well in short order, largely relying on thisbook, and tripled my salary.No guarantee, but this book covers a greatdeal of the material you need to know to be an effective Microsoft expert. I passed the MS TCP/IP exam using only the TCP/IP chapter as preparation. For those of you wanting to achieve MCSE status before the 12/31/00deadline, pick up this book and read it.

Inside Windows NT4 Server
This is an excellent computer book. It was the only book I used to pass three core exams and the TCP/IP exam.NB.I also used resources from the web.It is absolutely essential to do practice exams before the real exam.

This book will help you pass the exam
This is a good book. It contains a little more than you need to know to pass the exam. It can also be used by a novice who simply wants to learn NT. I would strongly recommend it if you can afford spending $70. One ofthe problems is multiple errors, although the errors are minor. The otherproblem is that the book is simply too big to carry around - it's over 1000pages, of which only about 600 pages are useful text, and the rest aresample tests and appendixes. The chapter tests are good to help understandthe material, but you won't see them on the actual exam. Another thing isthat in addition to chapter test, there is also the self-assesment test andthe mastery test, both of which simply repeat the capter questions indifferent order. They don't help much, and could have reduced the size ofthe book by at least 200 pages. I didn't find the CD useful at all. Itshould have contained the book's text, but it doesn't. All you will find isthe chapter tests and 2 other tests (see above)in not very usable format.Finally, the publisher was in such a rush to release the book, that theymissed the appendix that contains lab exercises. You will have to downloadit (along with errata) from Que's web site.

Could do better
It is basically a good book, but getting it released has clearly been a rush job.There were many typing errors and even some of the diagrams were scrambled.To be honest its quite shocking that this ever got past any proof-reading procedures.On the positive side though, the book was easy to read and well presented and I would recommend it but for the price.

A Good Book, but Contains ERRORS
At first I was impressed with the amount of information, but then horrified at the frequency and severity of documentation errors.On page 178 it even says you can create an Emergency Repair Disk by running "winnt /ox" which in reality creates Setup boot floppes (3 disk set).An Emergency Repair Disk is created by running"rdisk /s".In the sample questions on the CDs there are also errors similar to this, as the 'answer' contradicts information presented in the book.I was very disappointed having paid $70 for a book that contains such obvious errors.I would recommend the Microsoft materials over this, as well as reading through TechNet as it does NOT contain errors such as this. Also, On Page 93-94 of "Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Exam Guide looks as though Figure 5.1 and Figure 5.2 are reversed.Figure 5.2 says it will be "efficient" when in fact every BDC for the network is on the wrong side of the 56k link.A minor error but still not acceptable.
