The Long Wait
Loved the price, hated the wait.Site said it would take about 2 weeks, even though they were in the UK.After a month I contacted the company.They had no tracking and asked me to check my post office.After another week, I received the package.It looked like it may have rolled around in the belly of the aircraft, but still in OK shape.If you don't mind the wait, you can't beat the price.

Just what I needed!
A complete resource for Windows Server 2008. I am just starting out as a Systems Administrator and this set of books will be an excellent reference tool. A Concise Guide to Essential Windows Programming Concepts
The first thing I noticed when opening this book is that I could open the book to any section I was interested and find the information in a format that is easy to read and understand. The author clearly describes each concept and then supports the information with generous code samples (supplemented by the author's website in case the samples in the book are not enough). Within each topic, he does a good job of building up the concept, first explaining the basic principles, and then extending those basics to real world use.

This book is perfect for a web programmer like me. I have been using ASP.Net as long as it has been around, but I have only started doing Windows programming this year. I often find myself inferring how the Windows Operating System works based on my interaction with it through my code. This book provides a definitive guide that helps me to understand the underlying systems. I am a C# programmer and I was surprised to see that I am able to read and understand the examples in the book (given in C) with no problem.

I think this book is ideal either for someone looking to switch from web programming, or non-windows programming. It is also good for a programming student who wants to get into Windows programming. It would be better if the reader already has some basic programming foundation. However, the book does give enough basic description of even the most rudimentary concepts that if an initiate programmer encounters an unfamiliar concept, the book will give enough information to lead the reader in the right direction.

This book is a nice addition to my knowledge library. I would recommend it to anyone who is learning or practicing windows system programming.

Excellent book for Windows System Programming
If anybody is looking for a good technical resource to learn Windows programming "Windows System Programming by Jonathan Hart" is the best source for him. The author has clearly and cleverly joined each blocks and provided a good resouce for non experienced and experienced learner. It takes into a great detail coverage of what Windows is doing at a lower level. It is the only resource where I found practical and complete examples on real-world programming tasks, such as Named Pipes using IO Completion ports, file handling etc. Me being a hardcore .Net guy who has left C programming more than 10 yrs back, found it very helpful to understand how things work in back when you use Windows API.

The best thing is extensive code with great detail of explaination. Example code in the book are pretty good (though there were few minor issues which can be ignored).

Multiple chapters on multithreaded programming have been extremely insightful, indispensable and helpful. Johnson has done a wonderful job by providing enough information on each topic, while not loosing the main thread of thought. Overall, I pretty impressed by author deep understnading of System Programming.

I recommend this book for any serious Windows developer.

Excellent reference for Windows development beyond the .NET API
I was pleased with what I have read in this book. It is difficult to find books that cover the technical aspects of Windows programming, even harder to find a good one. This is not a book for most of the drag and drop Visual Basic crowd but if you want to extend yourself beyond the .NET environemnt then this book will be of great value to you.

Windows System Programming by Jonathan Hart is an excellent source of information about programming against the core system services provided by the windows API.Hart does an excellent job of detailing the numerous features provided by the API, their uses, and various pros and cons of using one over another.He also details the various changes in the windows API from older versions of the operating system up to its present incarnations as Windows 7and Windows 2008.It fulfills its objectives of explaining what Windows is, how to use it in realistic situations, and not burdening the reader with unnecessary detail.The comparison of various functionality with its Unix equivalents in an effort to increase program portability was an aspect of the book I enjoyed and made me feel would be a good companion book to one of the more traditional, operating system components books that go in depth into Unix functioning.As a companion book, it could be used to give the student a feel for programming against the Windows API as well as various Unix system functions as well.
The book covers how to develop against the various operating system services provided by the API and various issues that may arise with modern day technology.The 64-bit extensions to the API and programming in a multiprocessor environment are extensively covered and the points of confusion and consideration are recognized.The method of mitigating the risks involved with using all of these enhancements are also elaborated on which provides the reader with an in-depth understanding of the issues that may possibly be encountered when using these technologies.
One of the things I found most enjoyable about this book is the level of detail the author went in to with creating the exercises and their ability to increase the understanding of the topics covered in their companion chapter. I found these problems challenging, enjoyable, and not overly difficult.One could definitely use this as part of a curriculum in a class covering these operating system concepts.

A Very Positive Experience
I read this book from the perspective of an experienced .NET developer with very little knowledge of the Windows API. I liked the author's pace; the initial introduction to the Windows API structure and conventions was detailed enough for me to understand everything without causing me to lose interest through repetition or over-simplification. The examples throughout the book were clear and concise, and illustrated the subject matter well. The reading lists were germane and referenced high quality texts - some of which have made their way onto either my bookshelf or wish list. I find it much easier to grasp concepts by "doing" rather than merely reading, so I was extremely pleased with the exercises - these were well thought out and helpful, and certainly accelerated my learning.

Many of the concepts addressed in this text are familiar to me (multi-threading, security, etc), but only as implemented through the .NET framework. Even if I never write any production code in these areas, it's made me a better .NET developer now that I have a more in-depth understanding of the Windows API. I would absolutely recommend this book to .NET software engineers - even if you never write a line of code against the Windows API directly, it will give you a much broader understanding of what Windows is doing at a lower level. Disappointing
This book does exactly what it tells us not to do.It's a long-winded attempt to say "keep your work area clean, treat your customers well, and stay one step in front of the competition".The book attempts to address case studies, but then doesn't give useful information about how bad decisions were made or what were the results.Many times the author says that the customer "might" see something bad so they "might" think something bad and therefore won't do business with you again.the book would be more useful if it identified how many times "might" actually occurred and gave better examples.

And then the section about "don't have broken windows in the first place" -- geez, if i knew how to avoid them, i would not have purchased the book.

As much as I am interested in purchasing his book, I am so turned off by how unprofessional Mr. Randall is.While I was looking through the various books for window treatments on Amazon.com, I noted several times that he had commented on a customers' book review stating that their thoughts were a "joke", etc.I would think that a professional designer and author would have much better and more constructive things to be doing with his time.

This book is excellent. The condition of the book which was sold as being "like new" was a big dissapointment. Many of the pages were torn and scribbled on.

More information than most would care to know.
This book is awesome. I'm reading it along with Windows Internals, and this is my favorite of the two. I'm still reading it, and the knowledge keeps coming at a steady pace. This book is heavy on information and code. If you plan on developing for Windows in any serious capacity, this book is a must-read.

Great book
One of the greatest programming book I have ever read. Although topics it covers are rather advanced, Jeffrey's style makes everything so easy to follow. The greatest thing about book is that authors don't follow 'how-to', but 'why' approach. After reading each chapter you know the subject not becasue you know how-to do it, but because you understand how is it (threads, kernel objects, virtual memory) working. This approach is essential when you want to master technology, find hard-to-find bugs and design better SW.

12-13 years ago I read previous edition of this book. That time I was just inexperienced student, but I was able to understand nearly everything.
Today after 10 years of professional career this book was like piece of (delicious) cake.

For every server-side native Windows programmer this book is 'must'. I also recommend Joe Duffy's Concurrent Programming on Windows which gives you some other ideas about multithreading development.

By the way Richter also wrote CLR via C# (Pro-Developer) which is absolutely 'must' for every .NET developer. Also highly recommended.

Great Book for Windows Vista 32-Bit and Up...
This book is great, it doesn't hold your hand.You have to dissect the authors' programs yourself to relate them to the conceptual material in the chapters.Like all good teachers, they only explain difficult or misleading areas of the examples in detail, providing conceptual but not step-by-step explainations of the more easily deciphered (or otherwise just review material related) points in the code.

Don't buy this book for more than a joy-read without buying Windows Vista 32-Bit or Windows 7, however, because most of the programs will not work.(I tried out the code from the website (NoCD library book :( ).A simple trip to MSDN to look up the function that fails to execute in over half the example programs confirms this fact.)

I also reccommend Programming Windows by Charles Petzold and Windows Internals by Mark Russinovich/David Solomon as parallel companions to this book (that means keep them next to you, ready to reference...also don't forget to load up MSDN on your notebook!).

This is a very very involved read, which I like.Like I said before, you can't just sit there and watch the text go by on this one, so get your brain working!I will be ordering my own copy as soon as I upgrade to Vista or 7.

An update to a classic
I recently updated my previous century's copy of "Advanced Windows" to this one. This book adds a few details about Windows Vista although as a programmer I wouldn't want to do anything Vista specific. It dicusses not just how you would, say, use virtual memory, but also why. The discussion on architecture mkaes the book more or less complete. The chapter on DLL hooking will save you a lot of researching the Microsoft web site. A well written book that will be of use to a Windows C/C++ programmer. Christophe Nasarre is an author to watch out for.

Good reference book, but
As in many other books, this book also contains erroneous programs. And, what is even worse, one program which one of the authors claims he has solved a deadlock situation does not work the way he says it should, which means that program is NOT the solution.

The program is at page 569, where the function DisableThreadLibraryCalls does not solve the deadlock situation described on the previous page. Even more, the thread created is NOT run in any of two situations. I have tried the program on Windows 2003 Server x64, Windows Server 2008 x86 and Windows Server 2008 x64 and does NOT work the way described in the book.

If a program which is supposed to be THE solution does NOT solve the issue and DOES NOT work the way it is described, what about "normal" programs, which are not THE solution of anything?

I am wondering if any of the previous reviewers who claimed the beauty of DLL advanced techniques have ever tried any of the beauty of these techniques to see if they work the way this book claims they should. ... Read more

Good selection, unusual illustrations
This book features 61 traditional songs, primarily English and American folk and nursery songs.The illustrations, however, are much more diverse--from Japanese scrolls to a picture of a jeweled box shaped like a frog.

Each song has a brief introduction describing its origins or other important facts, and each image also has a description, often including historical tidbits.

The bountiful images (at least one per page, often more) make it a good book for young children to look at while singing or playing at the piano.

Go in and Out the Window
This looks like a book for children, and it is. But even more important, it is a book for babies! My two year old baby boy already knew some of the songs going into the book. Let me tell you that at two and two months he now requests "Bringing in the Sheaves."and "Down by the Riverside."

I have always been interested in the Gestalt therapy approach and decided to purchase this book based on the author experience and online reviews. I am very satisfied with the book, it is pleasant to read and a good source of practical examples and literature references. I would recommend it.

A great book for aspiring therapists
This is a great book from front to end. Oaklander provides good insight into the workings of a play therapist.I'm definitely not going to let this book out of my collection.

Great textbook
It certainly helps one understand much better how to work with children and provide techniques. However, I think it is because I used this with my Child Therapy class in graduate school so I can utilize this book to its fullest potential. If you're just reading it, it might be hard to practice some of the techniques because it might be as obvious. It's not the best written piece but the author is definitely knowledgeable.

A must have for anyone wanting to learn about the broken windows theory
This book is basically a follow up to the famous 1982 article by Wilson and Kelling which invented the Broken Windows theory. I really recommend this book as it is highly informative and it discusses the broken windows theory in great detail. It discusses various police operations across a number of cities which use the broken windows model in order to combat neighbourhood problems. They highlight throughout the book that broken windows methods are not about crack downs and sweeps (although do not actually mention the term "zero tolerance."). Highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn more about broken windows theory.

An eye opening & informed critique
Having worked in both Policing & Crime Prevention,I have long had doubts about the magical Cure all power attributed to Broken Windows Policies.

Fixing Broken windows not only casts considerable doubt on claims that "Broken Windows" is the THE answer to Crime & Violence reduction, it also gives alternatives.

I wish that I could afford to bulk order this book and send it to all 43 of England's Chief Constables and the Home Office...as they seem to have adopted the Broken windows policies "hook line & sinker" .

Great Product little pricey
This is a great product. My 9 year old twin girls love this stuff. Keeps them busy. I love the things they have created and have them all over the house. Takes a little practice to get the correct amount less is better than more. Only problem is refills can be a little pricey. Shop around on Amazon that is where I have found the best deals.

The only deployment book you need! Ever!
In a market where almost every computer book is around 900 pages (33% usable), Johan and his gang once again did what no one else is able to do today. Pack EVERYTHING you need to know about MDT and Deployments in less than 200 pages. they cut the fat and give you only what you need in detail. No BS.
I bought the book 2 months ago, changed the way I deploy and never looked back. Although it does not cover SCCM, you can get that part from DeploymentCD.com and combine the two.

Fantastic Book
I only wish I had found this book before I had read about 500 pages of other documentation. The book gives you step by step instructions on how to setup MDT. It is simple but comprehensive.

Superb book!! I count it as one of the top five in my library.
If you're looking for a good overview of window treatments, buy this book. It's a wonderful reference with beautiful pictures and clear explanations of the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of window treatments and combinations. The ideas are up to date and fresh. In two weeks I have already tabbed at least 10 treatments that I love and plan to make up or change out for the windows in my home. It would be a great first book for anyone who wants to learn more about creating their own window treatments or wants a better understanding of window treatments in order to talk to a decorator or work room.

A Contemporary, Updated Look at Window Decorating
Unlike some other window decorating books on Amazon.com that focus only on draperies, this book includes sections on shutters, blinds, woven-woods, verticals and combinations using these important elements. Many of these treatments also combine top treatments (valances, swags, etc.) and draperies.

Room settings with photos from top designers helped me decide what style and treatment looks best for my windows.There are so many books out there with crazy, overly elaborate, and outdated styles, and those books just didn't do anything for me.I prefer modern, simple lines and contemporary styles, and I found many treatments in this book to give me inspiration.(However, there are also many images of styles that are tastefully elaborate featured in the book, for those whose tastes lean that way.)

The exhaustive section on yardage calculations helped me to decide if a treatment required a lot of fabric or just a few yards. Surprisingly, many of the most elegant treatments (swags & cascades for example) only take few yards of fabric.This afforded me the option of obtaining more expensive fabrics than I thought my budget would allow.

I highly recommend this book.

confusing
The basics of any word program is covered well. The problem occurs when the manual becomes more technical on the SPSS side. I'm taking an online class using this book and program and there are many discussions in class about how to use it. If you are using it, you'd better know computers and programs pretty well in order to decipher some of the lessons in this book.

Great book, one of the best!
Oh I like this book, easy reading and a good resource of information.
If you are a novice, it is good for references but if you are a beginner, it is a wealth of knowledge.
Clear text and comprehensible, plenty of pictures and clear drawings, well put together.
I would highly recommend it to anyone!

Lots of good information -- just not the information I was looking for

I have 15 neglected 80-year-old duplex pulley windows.Not a word about this type in this book.

Much good stuff if I were doing other projects; maybe I'll come back to this later.

Misses a few obvious details
This book is well written and professionally designed.It contains a breadth of information, but the coverage seems wider than it is deep.I was interested in learning more about my replacement window options, but was fairly disappointed. While the book treats many different remodeling subjects, most of us are trying to solve "one" type of problem. I don't have a dozen different types of windows in my house, I have two.Also, the author misses a few obvious details faced by a majority of who are replacing windows.That is, almost all replacement windows are built much thicker (due to energy star ratings), so that the framing is different than the original window in place.This means that the windows lays more on the sheetrock instead of ending at the point where the sheetrock begins.This is one obvious detail that should always be discussed- i.e. the windows you buy will sit much differently than the older windows in your home that you want to replace.Overall, the book seemed to have more 'shop talk' thanaccustomed to by the average DIY'er.Perhaps it was intended more for a professional audience, who need more of a variety of detail.

Windows 7 Transition capsule
This book does a good job in helping a user transition from Windows XP/Vista to Windows 7.It is a definite help to me. Going from Windows XP to 7 seems to be filled with transition pains - I have become 'very comfortable' with the XP user interface over time (and still find myself looking for that ever elusive 'XP Classic' skin for Windows 7). This book is helpful in giving tips that ease the transition process.The transition journey from XP is still somewhat of a struggle, but having this book along as a companion, I believe I'll make it!

Basic - but well put together
I found this book to be a useful introduction to the upgrade procedure... but nothing I didn't already know.

You have to be kidding!!!Upgrade from Vista to Windows 7
I don't know why people read these books.I just received two (2) copies of Windows 7 Professional version and after going through all the steps prior to install, the magic moment arrived.I quote from message on my screen: "Windows Vista Ultimate cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 Professional. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 7 Professional instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and PROGRAMS".

Talk about adding insult to injury.After suffering through 4 years of use/abuse, the Ultimate version really punishes the User again and again and keeps it up on the kiss off.

What is the painless way NOW?Save up your money and buy a MAC after 25 years of resistance!

Excellent for anyone switching to Windows 7
I bought this book in anticipation of switching from Windows XP to Windows 7.This book gives an excellent outline of the procedures by which one can upgrade to Windows 7 from either Windows XP or Windows Vista (the latter of which I never installed).It describes the process of upgrading "from scratch," aka a "clean installation," which normally is best for moving up from Windows XP.It also describes the process of moving up from Windows Vista (which didn't apply to me), which does not require a "clean installation," also the latter often is the best when changing operating systems, generally speaking.

In separate sections, the book also gives a very good overview of preparing for an upgrade to Windows 7, as well as the new features (including the stricter security protections) found in Windows 7.I will add that at first, the increased security protections took some getting used to in Windows 7.It was quite a nuisance at first when exchanging and zipping up game files between pbem (play by email) opponents, for example.

In short, this is a great book for anyone planning to move from Windows XP or Vista to Windows 7.In my case, the new installation was relatively painless and efficient, even considering that I had to reinstall all of my programs.I have loved Windows 7, even with some "black (not blue) windows of death" crashes at times. ... Extremely disappointing
Considering the other reviews, I was extremely disappointed in this book. The best design is the somewhat anemic looking lounge on the front cover. The book covers many over decorated rooms that just look ridiculous and old fashioned. I even checked the publishing information to check I hadn't ordered a 1980s copy in error. Save your money. Buy something that has some relevance to designs of 2010.

"Comprehensive" it ain't!
I bought the 2nd edition hot off the press in April 2010, hoping for a comprehensive as well as up to date WHS reference.This appears to be the first review here of the 2nd edition, so if the previous edition deserved the praise it received for completeness in earlier reviews it apparently dropped several entire subjects in the update.

Specifically, don't look for help on any of the following:

1. Building or adapting your own hardware platform for WHS.Not a word.

2. Installing WHS software.Not a word.The book assumes you bought a complete box ready to boot up.

3. Add-ins.As far as this book is concerned, the subject doesn't exist.

4. Running other applications on WHS.There is a whole chapter on installing Windows SharePoint Services, (a business-class server app, the usefulness of which in the average household is not clear to me) but that's it.No help on trying to figure out what will work and what won't.

5. Backing up WHS itself.Backing up shared folders is briefly covered, but not a word on backing up the backup database even though Microsoft published a procedure a couple of years ago and a very handy add-in "BDBB" automates the process. And nothing on selecting and connecting an external hard drive to use for backups.(When you're backing up several hundred gigabytes, the speed advantage of eSATA over USB 2.0 is quite significant)

6. Security.Should you install antivirus software?Sorry, no help there.But a whole section on auditing if you want to detect malicious users in your household, along with some standard advice on securing household PCs.

All of the above is not to say the book does not contain a lot of useful information, but the claims that it covers everything of interest are more than slightly exaggerated.There's also a good deal of bloat in the form of excessively detailed step-by-step instructions on working through windows dialogs, along with a lot of stuff on registry editing, VBS scripts, and command-line arguments for those who enjoy doing things the complicated way rather than clicking a few buttons.There is a page-long vbs script provided, for example, to tell you how much free space you have on a hard disk. I guess both kinds of stuff are there to support the claim that the book supports beginners through advanced technical users.

I'm still looking for a comprehensive WHS reference.

The Best Manual for this Product
This is absolutely the best manual that I have seen for the Windows Home Server platform.It's a must for anyone new to that environment.

Good but starting to get out of date
This is probably the most thorough book I've seen about Windows Home Server (or "WHS").However, it was written some time ago and WHS has changed substantially since then, particularly in December of 2009 with the release of Power Pack 3.Windows Home Server is a very different OS from anything I've worked with before, and it helped to have some explanations as to the HOW and the WHY of Windows Home Server.

A lot of the Windows Home Server is easy to use because it goes through an interface called the Windows Home Server Console.Just the same, not all of the pieces of the Console are easy to understand at a lower level, and that's where Windows Home Server Unleashed comes in.My particular favorite section, however, is the chapter that discusses exactly how WHS manages files, folder replication, and storage:this is (to me) a weird way to do things, and the explanation helped my understanding greatly.

I'm writing this review in Feb. 2010.There is a new Edition of this book scheduled to come out in early April.If you're interested in a good reference, I feel this is the one.However, if you can wait, I'd suggest you do so because the newer version will cover the newer configuration of Windows Home Server, probably with more details on Power Pack 3.

If you really want to know WHS
I had lots of questions before buying this book, and I bought it based on the reviews provided by this "forum."

I didn't make a mistake by purchasing this voluminous archive.WHS is something of a mystery when first installing it; it's not like a typical operating system.There are many do's and don'ts.It will easily break if you don't understand its nature.But with this book in hand, I was able to learn enough that I haven't had a problem since the day it arrived.WHS is must-have-software for anyone with two or more computers, and this book is the only book I've found that stands up to the hopes I had of learning to use the system properly and effectively.It covers all you need to know and more.Now I use it as a reference guide, occasionally looking up something that might be of interest to me.

If there is a negative about this book, it's that it is slowly becoming outdated.Moreover, just a smidgeon of what the author writes in explanation of how some of the functions work is no longer true.Yet, his directions to putting it altogether are still great!

If you've purchased a ready-made WHS system from HP or others, or if you've built your own WHS, this book will save you much frustration.I wouldn't want to be without it.

How to Unleash Your Money: By Buying This Book
I bought an HP Media Server months ago and wanted to see what all it would be capable of.

I bought this book and it's been a disappointment. It covers essentially 80% of the items that are in the help file, manual or available online and really doesn't cover anything else.

More importantly, I'm shocked to see that there's no server support for the Zune - and this book further extends that silence. Want to integrate it with your XBOX360? This book isn't going to help you.

The other 20% (from the 80 I mention) covers some other functional basics, but not to the extent that I would assume would satisfy your average geek.At least not this one.

This book also becomes quickly dated by the fact that many add-ons have become available since it's publishing.

I would recommend users simply search online and view all the free information out there, especially since the Home Server has been out for more than a year now. ... Read more
