HANS HOFMANN 1880 Germany1966 USA IN 1966, A MONTH BEFORE HIS DEATH, HANS HOFMANN DESCRIBED HIS PROCESS OF painting in these words: When I paint, I paint under the dictate of feeling or sensing, and the outcome all the time is supposed to say something. And that is most often my sense of nature. . . it might suggest landscape and might only suggest certain moods, and so on but this must be expressed in pictorial means, according to the inner laws of these means. Only this is acceptable as art.[1] Hofmann went home for a visit in 1914. When World War I prevented his return to Paris, he opened his school for modern art in a Munich suburb. During the war years, Hofmann became closely acquainted with Kandinsky's work.[4] Following the war, young Americans began to flock to Hofmann's school. Carl Holty , Worth Ryder, Glenn Wessels, Vaclav Vytlacil , and others studied in Munich or attended his summer classes in Bavaria, France, and Italy.[5] In the summer of 1930, at the invitation of Worth Ryder, Hofmann taught at the University of California, Berkeley. He spent the next winter in Germany, and the following spring returned to teach in Los Angeles (at the Chouinard School of Art) and at Berkeley, where he wrote the first version of Creation in Form and Color: A Textbook for Instruction in Art . In 1932 he moved to New York. He taught for a year at the Art Students League, where his students included Burgoyne Diller, Harry Holtzman, and

HANS HOFMANN by Orville O. Clarke, Jr. Manny Silverman Gallery , West Hollywood) Most people are familiar with Hans Hofmann as one of the most influential teachers of the 20th century in America, and with his connection to Louise Nevelson, Lee Krasner, and Jackson Pollock, among others. Yet, that is where most knowledge ends. Fewer are aware of his theories of art and the dynamic and powerful nature of his paintings, or even that there was a Los Angeles connection: He was an instructor at the Chouinard School of Art. Hofmann remains a central figure in the development of a modernist aesthetic in the avant-garde in America. He provided a key link to European modernism through his experience with color and Fauvism and most particularly with Paul Cezanne and Cubism. He was able to set the standard that many young and impressionable artists were to follow. For Hofmann, the canvas was not a battleground for politics or religion, but a sacred spot where the dynamics of color and movement were to be explored. He denied the preeminence of one point perspective, declaring it dead and insisting on the honesty of the two-dimensionality of the picture plane. No longer would the illusionism of the Renaissance be the goal of a painter, but to find the balance of movement within the picture plane, or "push and pull," as Hofmann called it. He believed that the successful artist should balance the reciprocity of movements in opposite directions. Thus movement inside the pictorial space must be balanced by a movement towards the viewer. This was the goal that one must strive for.

Hans Hofmann American, born Germany, 1880-1966 Undulating Expanse Oil on canvas, 1955 Ackland Fund, 88.27 Hans Hofmann was born in Germany in 1880. Having studied art as a young man, largely in Munich, he became acquainted with the paintings of the Fauves in 1904 in Paris, where he knew Matisse. For the next 25 years he divided his time between his native Germany and Paris. In 1930, Hofmann was asked to teach at the University of California, Berkeley, and became so attracted to the United States that he settled here permanently, becoming a citizen in 1941. After moving to New York, where he died in 1966, Hofmann spent his summers in Provincetown, Mass. and ran a famous school for artists there. Hofmann's work is related to that of Abstract Expressionism in its freedom and exhuberent openness. The colors in his paintings are inevitably powerful, projecting joyous, sensuous enthusiasm. Although much of his later accomplishment was characterized by compositions built of square elements, Hofmann's work until about 1955 was unpredictable and apparently impulsive. It was, however, always underlayed with a carefully worked out structure. Undulating Expanse of 1955 is unusual in Hofmann's work because it is composed in a long horizontal format. The reason is that the painting is related to a commission for a mural that was never executed. Two small studies for this project, similar in composition but more exaggerated in format, also exist.

HANS HOFMANN: Chronology Johann Georg Albert (Hans) Hofmann is born in Wissenburg, Bavaria, Germany, on March 21, the son of Theodor and Franziska Hofmann. Family moves to Munich where Theodor Hofmann becomes a government official. At the Gymnasium, Hans develops interests in mechanics, science, and music, and he begins to draw. Meets Maria (Miz) Wolfegg, his future wife. Through Schwarz, meets the nephew of Berlin collector Phillip Freudenberg, who becomes his patron from 1904 to 1914 and enables him to live in Paris. Becomes good friends with Robert Delaunay. Opens the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts at 40 Georgenstrasse, Munich. Marries Miz Wolfegg on June 5. A series of Hofmann's drawings is reproduced by a photographic process known as lichtdrucke Former student Worth Ryder now an associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley, invites Hofmann to teach in the summer session. Click to tour Hofmann's work Much of the work in this inaugural exhibition was created in Provincetown, where Hans Hofmann spent his summers as teacher and painter from 1935 until his death in 1966. Whether painting still lifes in his converted barn studio or painting en plein air in the surrounding dunes, Hofmann’s ecstatic gaze spontaneously encompassed everything around him. The exhibition includes pen and ink and crayon drawings on paper, small works which reveal the magnitude of his vision, his ability, as Frank Stella has written, "to fuse the action of painting and drawing into a single, immediate gesture, [which] carries colored pigment into the viewer’s presence with the force of a bomb." Hofmann said, "I want always to live in color!" These small drawings are a monumental testament to the brilliance, vigor and sheer beauty of the work of this extraordinary man who was the primary force in the development of Abstract Expressionism and whose influence continues as a vital presence in the studios, galleries, and museums of Provincetown and beyond. The untitled drawings in this exhibition were created between 1932 and 1943, during the darkest days of the century and Hofmann's first decade in America. Yet they express all the exuberance remarkable in Hofmann's work. André Emmerich wrote that this joyful work is "a brilliant synthesis of the colors of Fauvism and the structure of Cubism which so profoundly marked all his mature work."
