Benedict ARGUMENT OF JOHN QUINCY ADAMS In rising to address this Court as one of its attorneys and counselors, regularly admitted at a great distance of time, I feel that an apology might well be expected where I shall perhaps be more likely to exhibit at once the infinities of age and the inexperience of youth, than to render those services to the individuals whose lives and liberties aren't the disposal of this Court which I would most earnestly desire to render. But as I am unwilling to employ one moment of the time of the Court in anything that regards my own personal situation, I shall reserve what few observations I may think necessary to offer as an apology till the close of my argument on the merits of the question. John Quincy Adams John Quincy Adams The first President who was the son of a President, John Quincy Adams in many respects paralleled the career as well as the temperament and viewpoints of his illustrious father. Born in Braintree, Massachusetts, in 1767, he watched the Battle of Bunker Hill from the top of Penn's Hill above the family farm. As secretary to his father in Europe, he became an accomplished linguist and assiduous diarist. After graduating from Harvard College, he became a lawyer. At age 26 he was appointed Minister to the Netherlands, then promoted to the Berlin Legation. In 1802 he was elected to the United States Senate. Six years later President Madison appointed him Minister to Russia. Serving under President Monroe, Adams was one of America's great Secretaries of State, arranging with England for the joint occupation of the Oregon country, obtaining from Spain the cession of the Floridas, and formulating with the President the Monroe Doctrine.

Knopf, 1996, pp.153-178 JOHN QUINCY ADAMS was not just another congressman. He had been, among many other distinctions, president of the United States, the sixth president, and the second of his family to serve in that office. But beyond that he was a living link to the nation's founders. Washington had no children; Jefferson had no sons who survived; Madison had no children of his own, although by marrying Dolley he acquired stepchildren. Hamilton was survived by seven children, none of whom reflected the brilliance of their father; Franklin's only son went over to the other side in the Revolution. Were there no politically active, able, republican direct male descendants of the great founders of the late eighteenth century? There was John Quincy Adams. Very few human beings can have had an upbringing in a nation's ideal comparable to his. He had spent his boyhood imbibing the meaning of the American Revolution from his extraordinary parents, at the center of the action. He had spent his adult career defining the role of the new American republic on the world scene.

The Importance of Assuming Full Power Hewlett Packard is another technological company that has found itself having serious economic difficulties the last couple of years, but when hiring Carleton S. Fiorina in mid-1999, the new CEO did not make the same mistake as Thoman, but assumed full responsibility. Refusing to share any power, she says, "I am running the business the way I think it ought to be run." The two former presidents have in common with Fiorina and Thoman that their appointments were heavily disputed, but only two of the four leaders managed to seize the challenge and successfully take command of power. Thoman might have been formally in charge of Xerox in the same way as John Quincy Adams formally was the elected president, yet the informal organizations they were to lead did not accept their leadership. History put aside, these were the mistakes that set the two apart from Fiorina and Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson once said, "It is not wisdom alone but public confidence in that wisdom which can support an administration." The logic in his argument certainly translates to the world of business, and Rick Thoman should by now have learnt the lesson that full dedication and support from one’s subordinates is needed if ideas are to be successfully implemented. Fiorina has already started implementing wide-reaching and radical reform at Hewlett Packard, but it is still too early to tell if the restructuring will be successful. She certainly has proven, though, that she has the power to implement her ideas. In that sense, she has already shown herself to be an effective leader. As long as she is able to keep the confidence of her employees, the team she is hired to lead will have a much greater chance of reaching success than Thoman’s subordinates ever had.

Search Birth and Education John Adams Independence National Historical Park John Adams was born at Quincy, then part of the ancient town of Braintree, on the 19th day of October, old style, 1735. He was a descendant of the Puritans, his ancestors having early emigrated from England, and settled in Massachusetts. Discovering early a strong love of reading and of knowledge, proper care was taken by his father to provide for his education. His youthful studies were prosecuted in Braintree, under Mr. Marsh, a gentleman whose fortune it was to instruct several children, who in manhood were destined to act a conspicuous part in the scenes of the revolution. He became a member of Harvard College, 1751, and was graduated in course in 1755: with what degree of reputation he left the university is not now precisely known; we only know that he was distinguished in a class of which the Dr. Hemmenway was a member, who bore honorable testimony to the openness and decision of his character, and to the strength and activity of his mind. Having chosen the law for his profession, he commenced and prosecuted its studies under the direction of Samuel Putnam, a barrister of eminence at Worcester. At the first interview they became friends; Gridley at once proposed Mr. Adams for admission to the bar of Suffolk, and took him into special favor. It was a pretty good collection of treatises of the civil law. In this place Mr. Adams spent his days and nights, until he had made himself master of the principles of the code.

America's Chrisitan Rulers: John Quincy Adams John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree, now Quincy, Massachusetts, the son of John Adams, the second President of the United States. On March 4th 1825, he was inaugurated as President and served one term. His inaugural address closed with these words: "Knowing that 'except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain,' with fervent supplications for His favor, to His overruling providence I commit, with humble, but fearless confidence, my own fate, and the future destinies of my country." Known as a great orator, he was a popular speaker in many places. He owed his influence, not to his manner, presence or pleasing tones, but to the fact that what he said was worth hearing. When it was feared that Christian influence was waning in New England, he prepared a lecture on Truth, which he delivered in many places. The premise was: "A man to be a Christian must believe in God, in the Bible, in the Divinity of the Savior's mission, and in a future state of rewards and punishments." Adams wrote a series of letters to his son on "The Bible and its Teachings" which were published in the New York Tribune, in which he stated: "I have myself for many years made it a practice to read through the Bible once every year. I have always endeavored to read it with the same spirit and temper of mind which I now recommend to you; that is, with the intention and desire that it contribute to my advancement in wisdom and virtue ... My custom is, to read four or five chapters every morning, immediately after rising form my bed. It employs about an hour of my time, and seems to me the most suitable manner of beginning the day."
