    Biography
The greatest Italian poet and one of the most important writers of European literature. Dante is best known for the epic poem Commedia , c. 1310-14, later named La Divinia Commedia . It has profoundly affected not only the religious imagination but all subsequent allegorical creation of imaginary worlds in literature. Dante was born into a Florentine family of noble ancestry. Little is known about Dante's childhood exept what he himself have revealed. Dante's mother died when he was a child and his father died before the future poet reached manhood. He was thoroughly educated in both classical and Christian literature. At the age of 12 he was promised to his future wife, although he had already fallen in love with another girl whom he called Beatrice. By the time Dante was 18, he had already become interested in writing verse, sending an early sonnet to the poet Guido Cavalcanti. This started their friendship. Dante also dedicated his first book to Cavalcanti . The work

Alighieri Dante Italian poet, philosopher whose epic poem The Divine Comedy is the greatest and most influential of medieval poetry.
The Divine Comedy is a remarkable work of epic poetry that has had a profound influence on the course of world literature.
One of the greatest works of medieval literature, The Divine Comedy is a journey through hell, purgatory, and paradise; based on the poet's own experience of exile from his home, Florence.
Dante's extraordinary achievement makes the vision of a self-contained universe, founded on the philosophy of his day, completely believable.
All of Dante's work, including his many discussions, assess contemporary theology and ideology comprehensively.
Dante is perhaps the greatest Italian moral philosopher and political thinker of all time.

DANTE, Dante (or Durante) Alighieri (1265—1321), the greatest of Italian poets, was born at Florence about the middle of May 1265. He was descended from an ancient family, but from one which at any rate for several generations had belonged to the burgher and not to the knightly class. His biographers have attempted on very slight grounds to deduce his origin from the Frangipani, one of the oldest senatorial families of Rome. We can affirm with greater certainty that he was connected with the Elisei who took part in the building of Florence under Charles the Great. Dante himself does not, with ...

    Dante's Inferno

Dante Alighieri, called Dante, wrote the poetic masterpiece La Divina Commedia , or The Divine Comedy , which helped establish his native Tuscan dialect as the literary language of Italy. He is not only Italy's preeminent poet but, along with Shakespeare , one of the towering figures of Western literature. This primacy is accorded him because of his profound understanding of medieval thought, his mastery of complex technical skills, and the dramatic range and originality of his imagination. Dante's life spanned the troubled years of the late Middle Ages, in which the long struggle between pope and emperor for supremacy in Italy reached its most acute phase, and in which the concept of nationalism, exemplified by the growing power of the French monarchy, was displacing the medieval vision of a united Christendom. Deeply involved in the issues and events of his day, Dante reflected in his writings the aspirations and anxieties of his contemporaries, while projecting into them a universal and timeless dimension.
Of a middle-class Florentine family with some pretensions to ancient nobility, Dante received a good education both in the classics and in scholastic Christian literature. At a very early age he began to write poetry, largely love lyrics (canzoni) in the style of Guido Guinizelli and Guido Cavalcanti. The most memorable events of his youth were his two encounters (1274 and 1283) with Beatrice Portinari, to whom he remained spiritually devoted for the rest of his life in a metaphysical transformation of the tradition of courtly love popularized by the Provencal troubadours despite his own marriage (c. 1285) to Gemma Donati (which produced several children) and Beatrice's to Simon de'Bardi. The progression of his love for her was embodied in the love poetry of his first book

    http://www.who2.com/dantealighieri.html
DANTE ALIGHIERI Poet An exiled and wandering figure during his writing lifetime, Dante is now considered Italy's greatest poet so much a literary giant that he is generally known by his first name alone. The Divine Comedy , by far his most famous work, is the story of a journey through Hell, Purgatory and finally Paradise. (The journey through Hell is often referred to independently as "Dante's Inferno .") In the poem the first two stages are guided by the Roman poet Virgil , and the final visit to Paradise is led by a woman named Beatrice a girl Dante met briefly when he was nine and whom he idolized he rest of his life. The Divine Comedy is the source of many famous classical images, including many works by William Blake , and is famous for its inscription on the gates of Hell: "All hope abandon, ye who enter here."
Extra credit : Dante named his work La commedia , or The Comedy . After his death others added "Divine" to make it La divina commedia

Born: between May 15 and June 15, 1265, in Florence, Italy Died: September 13 or 14, 1321, in Ravenna Dante's writing is noted for its lofty thought and fluent verse. He chose to write in the common language of the time rather than in Latin which was the generally accepted language of preference for proper written works. Many consider Dante to be the greatest Italian poet to ever live, but in addition, he was a notable writer of prose, a politically active thinker, a moral philosopher and a literary theorist. Dante was born into a bourgeois family of noble ancestry in Florence, Italy. His mother died when he was a few months old and although his father remarried, he died when Dante was only eighteen.
