Sherwood Anderson By Stephanie Baker T he literary output of Sherwood Anderson is abundant. During his lifetime he published eight novels, four collections of short stories, three books of poems and plays, more than 300 articles, reviews and essays, and three volumes of autobiography. Upon his death in 1941 he left behind "eleven hundred manuscripts, including unpublished fiction and journals, and over 12,000 letters written to and by most of the artistic and intellectual leaders of the twentieth century" (White 4). His work has been praised by authors and critics such as Waldo Frank, Malcolm Cowley, William Faulkner, Sinclair Lewis, Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe . The combination of his output and the mass amount of critical analysis of his work has earned Sherwood Anderson a rightful place in literary history. Anderson was born September 13, 1876 in Camden, Ohio, a small agricultural town. At the age of eight, he and his family moved to Clyde, Ohio and this would begin a series of moves throughout Anderson's lifetime, including time spent in Chicago and New Orleans. He would also hold a series of occupations including volunteer work during the Spanish-American War, a student at the Wittenberg Academy in Springfield, Ohio, a copywriter for a Chicago advertising agency and the chief owner and manager of a paint factory. Unsatisfied with his life as a businessman, Anderson, at the age of 36, spontaneously walked out on his job at the paint factory in order to focus on his lifelong dream of writing.

The Storyteller Famed author Sherwood Anderson discovered a warmth and vitality in the human condition during his stint as editor of the two weekly newspapers published in Smyth County, Virginia. n November 3, 1927, a curious, three-paragraph story appeared in the Smyth County News, a weekly newspaper published in Marion, Virginia. Sandwiched between an account of the Marion High School football team's 57-6 victory over Shawsville, and a clothing store advertisement, the story was headlined, "Fooled Again." It read: "Your new editor came into town Monday. Children prancing in the streets at night, dancing, song, laughter, cheers. Girls and boys in fancy costumes. "Fool that I am. I thought it was because all Marion was so glad the new editor had arrived. "It was only Hollowe'en." The new editor was Sherwood Anderson. He was their third child. The family was forced to move shortly after Sherwood was born because his father's small business had failed. They finally settled permanently in Clyde, Ohio in 1884. The income was rarely adequate without the added help of the children's income. Due to the difficulties, Anderson's father began drinking heavily and his mother died in 1895. Sherwood was eager to take on odd jobs and earned the name "Jobby". However, his interests caused him to miss school often. He finally left high school before graduating. In 1896, Anderson left Clyde for Chicago where his brother Karl was living. He worked as a manual laborer until enrolling in the army for service in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. However much of the story was reconstructed, Anderson did respond to the pivotal moment and broke from his job in Elyria. Instead of becoming a Bohemian artist though, he rejoined the advertising agency in Chicago. He sent for his family, wrote the circulars as he once had, and continued to write feverishly in his free time. In 1914, he divorced Cornelia and married Tennessee Mitchell. That same year his first novel was published, entitled Windy McPherson's Son. Along with his second, Marching Men, of 1917, he later commented that his first novels were raw and immature. He is best known for his classic collection of tales, Winesburg, Ohio, which he had begun writing in 1915 and generally wrote in the order the stories appear in the text. The book was published in 1919 and received much acclaim, establishing him as a talented modern American author. He espoused themes similar to the later works of T.S. Eliot and other modernists.

After serving in the Spanish-American War, he attended Wittenberg Academy in Springfield, Ohio for a year, then took a job in Chicago as a copywriter in an advertising firm. He married Cornelia Lane in 1904, had three children and began a career as president of a mail-order paint company in Elyria, Ohio. Following a difficult period of marital and business problems, he suffered a psychological crisis in November 1912, which led to his leaving his business and family and returning to Chicago to pursue a writing career. In Chicago he resumed his advertising work to make ends meet and by 1914 began to publish his writings, which in the next eight years included three novels, 'Windy McPherson's Son' (1916), 'Marching Men' (1917), and 'Poor White' (1920); the story cycle 'Winesburg, Ohio' (1919); and a story collection, 'The Triumph of the Egg' (1921). He married Tennessee Mitchell in 1916, but the marriage was not a success; in 1922 he left Chicago for New York, then Reno, Nevada. After his divorce in 1924, he married Elizabeth Prall, and they moved to New Orleans.
