Augustus Caesar From Dio Cassius, Roman History For example, the emperors are often called "consul." The title "Imperator" is held by them for life, not only by those who have won victories in battle but also by all the rest, to indicate their absolute power (but they are never called "king" or "dictator"). ... By virtue of their titles, they gain the right to draft troops, collect taxes, declare war, make peace, and rule foreigners and citizens alike everywhere and always - even to the extent that they can put to death both military officers and senators within the city limits of Rome! And this is not all they can do. By virtue of holding the office of censor they investigate our lives and morals as well as take the census. By virtue of being priests they control all matters both worldly and sacred. By holding the power of tribune they have the power to nullify or veto measures taken by any other officials. And as "tribunes" they are inviolable; if anyone even appears to wrong them in the slightest degree, they may ruin the guilty party without a trial.

    Augustus Caesar
The year 509 BC Rome finally became a Republic and thus started the Roman empire. As Rome rose to power they went through many wars and many conflicts between the plebeians and patricians. The republic was made out of 3 groups, the consuls which were 2 men elected from the senate, the senate which was made of 300 patricians, and the assembly made from plebeians. Many years later Rome started to reject the republic when it went into a series of civil wars. 3 men form the first triumvirate, Julius Caesar, Pompeii, and Crassus. Julius Caesar became the victor. He was then rewarded dictator for life. On the date September 23, 63 BC a boy was born. He was originally Caesar's grand-nephew. This boy would later grow to a power and change Rome for good. Around the years 16-15 BC, was formed the beginning of a civil service in Rome. This had never been done before but was destined to become an essential feature of the imperial system. Around the same time, a completely reformed administrative structure of Rome, Italy, and the entire empire was matured. The empire's financial system at the time was far more superior to anything else in the entire empire. This great financial system was based on the central treasury, but the details of its relationship with the treasuries of the provinces, and most of all the province of Augustus, are still unsatisfactory understood. Mainly because, even though the emperor proudly recorded his gifts to the central treasury, he did not report what funds passed in the opposite direction.

    Description
Right after Caesar was murdered, Octavian encountered opposition from Mark Antony who wanted take Caesar's place. Octavian quickly made an alliance with Antony to avenge Caesar's murder. After this the two men made an alliance with one of the most powerful generals in the Roman army, and ruled as triumvirs (3 dictators ruling together). The new triumvirs immediately published a list of names who were sentenced to immediate death and who's land was to be seized by the state. This was considered one of the bloodiest actions that ever happened in Rome. In 42, B.C. Octavian and Antony won a victory over Brutus and Cassius, who were two of the murderers of Caesar, and killed them. After this victory, Antony ruled the eastern part of the empire and Augustus went back to Rome. In 40 B.C. Octavian and Antony ended their partnership and by 33 were at war with each other. Antony divorced Octavian's sister (a marriage arranged for political reasons) and married Cleopatra, who was queen of Egypt. However, by September 31 B.C., Octavian defeated Antony and Cleopatra off the coast of Actium (which is off the western coast of modern Greece) leaving Octavian as the undisputed leader of Rome. When he became the new leader of the Roman Empire he refused to be called rex (king) or dictator (dictator), but was eventually given the title Augustus which refers to ``one consecrated by religion". ``Victory in the east, the vindication of his political policies in Italy, and the booty of the Ptolemies gave him an unassailable position, soon expressed in terms of divinity." Augustus wisely did not take too many titles or honors from the Roman senate very quickly because he saw what happened to Caesar when he made this mistake. Instead, he acted as if he was going to bring back the republic that many Romans wanted. Doing this, he gained favor with the senate and the people of Rome. Eventually, they would grant him all the power he wanted without he himself ever having to fight for it. Augustus reigned 44 years from 31 B.C.-A.D. 44 and extended the empire greatly during his rule.

    Augustus Caesar (63 BC-AD 14)
    Roman emperor
The first Roman emperor, Augustus established an era of peace and prosperity throughout Rome and was himself one of history's most astute and innovative leaders. He restructured government, reformed the money system, built a vast network of roads, and in the capital itself erected many buildings of architectural importance.
Octavian - his name until he acquired his imperial title Augustus, meaning "Venerable" - was the great-nephew and adopted heir of Julius Caesar . When his great-uncle was assassinated, in 44 BC, he traveled to Rome to claim his inheritance. The following year, after becoming a senator and a consul, he formed a triumvirate with Mark Antony and Lepidus to govern Rome. He eventually rid himself of his corulers, and from 27 BC until his death wielded absolute power.
Caesar Augustus, was a complex man, capable of both cruelty and kindness, baseness and nobility. As testament to his historical significance, for centuries despots and dictators have attempted to recapture his mystique and emulate his splendor.

The original Roman year had 10 named months Martius "March", Aprilis "April", Maius "May", Junius "June", Quintilis "July", Sextilis "August", September "September", October "October", November "November", December "December", and probably two unnamed months in the dead of winter when not much happened in agriculture. The year began with Martius "March". Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome circa 700 BC, added the two months Januarius "January" and Februarius "February". He also moved the beginning of the year from Marius to Januarius and changed the number of days in several months to be odd, a lucky number. After Februarius there was occasionally an additional month of Intercalaris "intercalendar". This is the origin of the leap-year day being in February. In 46 BC, Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar (hence the Julian calendar) changing the number of days in many months and removing Intercalaris

    • Julius Ceaser is assinated; his will declares Octavian heir, giving him the name Ceaser. Mark Antony and Octavian defeat the conspirators at Phillippi and divide the Roman Empire among them. Antony and Cleopatra commit suicide; Octavian annexes Egypt. Octavian restores the Republic and is given the name Augustus. Augustus names his son, Tiberius, hei and successor following th death of Lucius and Gaius.

Augustus Ceaser was the son of Atia who was Julius Ceaser's niece, Octavian's dad died when Octavian was four years old, but he did have a stepfather named Lucius Marcius Philippus who was extremely fond of him and brought famous teachers to his country house outside of Rome so that the boy could have the finest classical education. He did particularly well in rhetoric, a subject that taught him to put his thoughts in order and write them down clearly, and speak easily in public. He showed his mastery at that subject when he gave a funeral oration of his grandmother, Ceaser's sister.
Octavian( Augustus's birth name) must have bragged about the deeds of his grand-uncle to his playmates but to much activity would send him coughing and wheezing to his bed. There was something magnetic about Octavian. From his early childhood people were drawn to his intelligence, his calm and mild expression, and his sense of purpose, unusual for his years. Although he was not a healthy boy, he carried himself gracefully and was unusually handsome, with bright eyes, tousled blond hair, and a fine, slightly curved nose.

    http://www.geocities.com/saifrahmanuk/ac.html
AUGUSTUS CAESAR 63BC-14AD Augustus Caesar, the founder of the Roman Empire, is one of the great pivotal figures in history. He ended civil wars that had disrupted the Roman Republic during the First century BC, and he reorganized the Roman government so that internal peace and prosperity were maintained for the next two centuries. Gaius Octavius ( better known as Octavian; did not receive the title "Augustus' until he was thirty-five years old) was born in 63BC. He was the grandnephew of Julius Caesar who was the leading political figure of Rome during Octavians youth. Julius Caesar, who had no legimate sons of his own, liked the youth, and helped prepare him for a political career. However, when Caesar was assinated in 44BC, Octavian was still only an eighteen-year old student. The death of Caesar set off a long and bitter struggle for power between various Roman military and political figures. At first, his rivals, who were all men of long experience in the rough arena of Roman politics, did not consider the youthful Octavian a serious threat. Indeed, the young man's only vissible asset was that Julius Caesar had adopted him as his son. By making skillful use of this advantage, Octavian managed to win the support of some of Caesars legions. Many of Caesars troops, however chose to support Mark Anthony, who controlled the eastern portion, and Octavian who controlled the west. For a few years, there was an uneasy truce between them.
