Iain M. Banks Scottish author Iain Banks' first novel was published in 1984. Since then, he's written science fiction under the name "Iain M. Banks" and mainstream fiction under the name "Iain Banks". His science fiction mostly focuses on a future interstellar civilization called The Culture, characterized by high technology, vast starships housing millions of people, and brilliant and manipulative computer Minds whose means and ends are often hidden from and alien to the humans. The stories revolve around both humans' reactions to the Culture they live in, and the reactions of humans and outsiders when outside entities come into contact with the Culture. Fans of literate, high-tech hard science fiction or stories which involve byzantine plots or conspiracies will probably enjoy his work. Click on a book's image or title to order from Amazon.com
The Player of Games
Reviewed January 2001 Jernau Gurgeh is one of the Culture's best game-players. He plays every game in the star-spanning civilization, and plays them all well. In any given game, there are perhaps a few people who could beat him, but they're specialists; he's a generalist, and can hold his own at anything. Gurgeh has lived almost all his 70 years on Chiark Orbital, playing, teaching, writing papers about games. He's happy there and sees no reason to leave. He's infatuated with a young woman named Yay Meristinoux who doesn't return his interest, and he's friends with a drone named Chamlis Amalk-ney, and a more eccentric drone named Mawhrin-skel. One day, however, he plays a young prodigy named Olz Hap at Stricken, and is tempted by Mawhrin-skel to cheat, to have the drone learn where her hidden pieces are so he can score the most dramatic victory in the history of the game. He yields to temptation, wins the game, but doesn't score his historic victory.

Consider Phlebas (new UK cover)
Illustrator Mark Salwowski.
Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks was first published in 1987. The following is a description of the Vavatch Orbital (a mini-ringworld) taken from the book: "Vavatch lay in space like a god's bracelet. The fourteen-million kilometre hoop glittered and sparkled, blue and gold against the jet black gulf of space beyond. As the Clear Air Turbulence warped in towards the Orbital, most of the Company watched their goal approach on the main screen in the mess. The aquamarine sea, which covered most of the surface of the artefact's ultradense base material, was spattered with white puffs of cloud, collected in huge storm systems or vast banks, some of which seemed to stretch right across the full thirty-five-thousand-kilometre breadth of the slowly turning Orbital. Only on one side of that looped band of water was there any land visible, hard up against one sloped retaining wall of pure crystal. Although, from the distance they were watching, the sliver of land looked like a tiny brown thread lying on the edge of a great rolled-out bolt of vivid blue, that thread was anything up to two thousand kilometres across; there was no shortage of land on Vavatch."
In a later section of the book there is the following line: "They were still flying over the Circlesea towards land when the Culture blew the whole Orbital into a fourteen-million-kilometre halo of light and dust..."

Iain M. Banks Index
It was some years back now that, while wandering through the Wellington Central Public Library - before it moved out of the building now occupied by the National Art Gallery, I came across a strange book. 'Consider Phlebas' written by one Iain M. Banks. I put it in my bag, later checked it out of the library and began to read... The end result was of that initial reading was a collection of all of Iain's books that I could get my hands on along with a subsequent redefinition of what I expected out of a truely classic science fiction story. His work has the power to imagine huge structures and conflict on a massive scale while, at the same time, making it seem so real. He writes both fiction and science fiction with one important way to distinguish between them. All science fiction books are written by 'Iain M. Banks' while all the fiction works are written by an 'Iain Banks'. While I don't fully appreciate the reasons behind doing this, and it is quite intentional, it is useful to remember because it serves as an indicator of what the general aim of the story is but it also is quite good at confusing book stores who treat the two names quite distinctly. The hope is to allow readers to not only find out enough to find the books, but to introduce them to people who haven't met Iain's work before and finally to provide my own interpretation of the what the works are about.

IAIN BANKS
"I just pick up my stories as I amble along, little bits of this, little bits of that. It gets easier the longer you've been at it." Birthplace

Fife, Scotland
Education
Stirling University (English, philosophy, psychology)
Other jobs
He has worked as a dustman, and for IBM and British Steel.
Did you know? He has made guest appearances both in Monty Python and the Holy Grail (as an extra) and on the Then Jericho comeback album, Orgasmaphobia. Critical verdict After the initial controversy of The Wasp Factory, Banks's literary star has risen and his fan base swelled to fanatic proportions; his prolific career has been both populist and experimental (The Bridge and Song of Stone are impressively left-field). Meanwhile, in his SF guise, Iain M. (an "attempt on the Most Penetrable Pseudonym world record") adds to the Culture series with a speed and facility that suggests he may be doing a genre with each hand.

Iain M. Banks Scottish Science Fiction Author Banks addresses the second of two arguments against the possibility of Artificial Intelligence: "...two, that self-awareness resides in a supernatural soul...which one assumes can never be scientifically understood (equally improbable, though I do write as an atheist)". from "A Few Notes on the Culture" posted on rec.arts.sf.written (August 1994) and reproduced in Critical Wave (UK Fanzine) and Alarums and Excursions #236 (April 1995). From a profile by Liam Fay entitled Depraved Heart: "I wanted to write about faith and the nature of belief," explains Iain Banks. "I find that fascinating, being an evangelical atheist myself. There was also the sheer fun of making up a new religion. I felt like L. Ron Hubbard. He did it for real, I know. But he started out being serious about it and then he eventually started saying things that were just so utterly absurd that he thought, 'Well, they can't possibly swallow this. It's so stupid'. There is considerable fun to be had devising a religion. I recommend it." Banks calls himself an "evangelical atheist". He talks of wanting "to proselytise about the badness of religion, and to say that faith is wrong, belief without reason and question is just evil".
