American authors and illustrators (1923)
Biography:
Janice Grant and Stantley Berenstain were both born in Philadelphia in 1923. They met in 1941, on their first day of classes at the Philadelphia College of Art. Stan's first works as writer and illustrator were at the Army, for he collaborated with an Army newspaper. In 1946 they got married and have two sons. From 1956 through 1990, they did together their first cartoon feature for McCall's/Good Housekeeping called It's All in the Family (a people family). And soon they got interested for young children's books, to help their sons learn to read. So they created a bear family called Berenstain Bears and in 1962, thanks to Dr. Seuss The Big Honey Hunt was published. This first book just presented a family of three (Papa, Mama and Brother), but in 1974 they added Sister in The Berenstains Bears' New Baby . This book opened the series of First Time Books , the most popular among parents, children and critics. In the year 2000, the bear family has grown again, for The Berenstain Bears: Baby makes Five has been just published.

Author and Illustrator Autobiographical sketch of Janice Berenstain written for the Fifth Book of Junior Authors, 1983: Autobiographical sketch of Stanley Berenstain written for the Fifth Book of Junior Authors, 1983: When the Depression hit, we moved around a lot. For a short period, I lived only blocks away from Janice Grant (my future collaborator in cartooning, writing, and illustration, as well as in marriage and parenting), although I never met her until I entered the Philadelphia College of Art years later. It was the start of World War II, and within a year, the U.S. Army sent me to the Midwest as a medical artist. My duties involved making detailed drawings of the new procedures used by plastic surgeons doing reconstructive surgery on facial wounds. While in the army, cartooning seemed to me to be a way to earn extra money, since all transactions could be conducted by mail. I came across The Saturday Review of Literature, a magazine then unfamiliar to me, but that used cartoons dealing with subjects on which I felt I had something to say. I sent four cartoons to the editor, Norman Cousins, whom I had also not heard of before. When all four were accepted I was sure I had hit on the field in which an artist could make a living. I didn't sell another for a year. The first of our bumptious bear family books was published in 1962as a result of our becoming interested in the books our young sons were reading. While they enjoyed many types of books, they were also attracted by humor and cartoons, and at that time, except for Dr. Seuss, no one was creating robust, falling-down, laugh-out-loud funny books for kids. We felt, too, we could bring our own specialty, family humor, to children. The books are a source, now, for televisionthe first animated special based on the characters appeared Christmas, 1979.

About Stan and Jan Berenstain
Stanley and Janice (Grant) Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia. At the age of 18, the two met on their first day at the Philadephia College of Art and married on April 13, 1946. Stan spent a few years in the Army, and his first job writing and illustrating came when he began drawing cartoons for an Army newspaper. Together, the Berenstains began their career writing cartoons in their series called "It's All in the Family." This comic, rather adult in nature, was featured in McCalls and Good Housekeeping magazines from 1956-1990. Their art was also featured on the cover of Collier's magazine twenty times. With the success of their "All in the Family" cartoon and a number of adult humor books based on this series, the Berenstains felt they might like writing children's books, as well. Stan and Jan's two sons, Michael and Leo, enjoyed Dr. Suess books, and the Dr. himself, Theordor Geisel, asked Stan and Jan to write a book in his series of Cat in the Hat/Beginniner Books. The result: in 1962, the Berenstains released their first book about a family of bears, The Big Honey Hunt This story was an instant success, and since 1962, over 250 Berenstain Bears stories have been written and illustrated by Stan and Jan. According to the authors, bears were chosen as the central characters "because they can stand up, they look good in clothes, and are fun to draw."

http://www.fiona.co.jp/BIOGRAPHY/berenstainstanandjan.htm
Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia. They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art. They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art. During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory. When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines. After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy. Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt . It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears". Over 50 children's books later, Stan and Jan still plan all of their books together both write the stories, and both write the pictures. They live outside of Philadelphia in the country.
