Charles Bernstein
, I love. Why is because nonstop word for pound and synapse for syntax he is a voracious poem-eater and spitter-out of juicy toothsome fodder for all manner of not making do, not making it, but making. His recent post (gratis) on the Buffalo Poetics Listserv re: Laura Riding , great unsung US poet, is exemplary and ff. Charles scintillates at her appearance in the new Talk zine bridles about what is said. He wants it both ways! and so do we. Always. Bob Holman remarkable. . .
but regrettable. . . .
I wonder if anyone else in Poetics List Land noticed that in the premiere issue of Talk magazine, just out, there is a piece on Laura Riding, detailing her close encounter with Schuyler Jackson and family in 1939? It's remarkable that Riding gets such a big spread, with a full page picture, in this magazine, but regrettable that only a few lines of her writing are included. More surprising, and unfortunate, is the impression given by the article that (Riding) Jackson stopped writing and settled down to become a housewife for the last fifty years of her life.

The game is grammatical, but the arrow hits: a real corpse decomposes. Between reception, tautology and quotation, falls dead silence. What seems a sort of ready-made language (in which Charles Bernstein's playfulness matches Cadiot's) turns out to be a carnival on top of 'catastrophe/ catastrophic'. Need I add: a poem for our time?
Rosmarie Waldrop
is almost (just about, quite like, virtually, similar to) a translation of Cadiot's French "original," with this difference: its life in "the American" his the "target" just as often as in the French. Olivier Cadiotone of Paris' most provocative, original, and funny new poetsteams up with L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E's Charles Bernstein to compose a poem noir , where it's never clear what's happening or who done itonly that a new kind of poetry from France has just arrived.

Summer 2000 Republics of Reality, 1975-1995 Charles Bernstein by Patrick Pritchett eginning in the late '70s as the co-founder of the seminal magazine L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E, Charles Bernstein has exerted an enormous influence on three generations of poets now who have made it their concern to explore the possibilities of language as an instrument of social inquiry, philosophical speculation, comical dysprosody and linguistic liberation. The publication of Republics of Reality , which brings together in their entirety many of the poet's early, out-of-print books, along with newer poems, is a welcome event. As the title implies, Bernstein's poetics celebrates a radical heterogeneity; the idea that a republic is "a thing of the people" ( res publica ) is given full, polyvocal play in this collection. Bernstein's conception of poetry as a public form of speech grows out of and contests Olson's longing for a poetry that would speak for the polis. But where Olson's project was founded on a nostalgia for a unified social order, even one organized around the savvy recognition that totality should consist of distinctly separate singularities, Bernstein starts out from the premise that the polity is a mess. In Beckett's phrase, he "admits the chaos and does not try to say that it is something else." For Bernstein, the field of our daily social practices and its systems of classification, its

At once the most controversial and popular, most "accessible" and yet most twarting-of-expectations, of the "Language" poets, Bernstein is also the writer of that group who strove early on to experiment with both extremes of these newly discovered methods, from the use of the word in its isolated, destabilized but utopian expressivity to the restaging of the plain phrase at it operates in daily, even bureaucratic, life to convey our most heroically banal thoughts.
This collection of long out-of-print chapbooks none of these poems have appeared in any of Bernstein's many breatkthrough volumes, such as Islets/Irritations (1983) or Dark City (1994) provides a compelling, substantial overview of his career, meanwhile adding to the range of his impressive canon of major and minor (sometimes upsettingly so) works.
If one associates Language poetry with the non-referential, the unemotive, and fetishization of textual form and the language of theory over that of speech in other words, opaque writing that "resists" lyrics forms in the service of a political/aesthetic argument that is far from obvious one will be immediately surprised with the opening poem from the 1976 volume "Parsing", titled "Sentences," practically a litany of anxieties, attitudes and stuttering intensities, produced by the need to be social:
