About Music Like Dirt Quarternote Chapbook Series
Frank Bidart writes of Music Like Dirt

"Since the publication, in 1973, of Golden State , Frank Bidart has patiently amassed as profound and original a body of work as any now being written in this country. He has given form for our age to what is most urgent and most private in the human soul: the ordeals of solitude and mortality and hunger and, recently, that action through which being speaks: the drive to make or create. Bidart's poems sound like no one else's; they look like no one else's: to accommodate the requirement of his art, that the voice be precisely enacted in its every variation and hesitation, Bidart has made of his form a theatre: if the voice must be confined to the page, it will exploit that page, extend its possibilities."

There is something missing in our definition, vision, of a human being: the need to make.
We are creatures who need to make.
Because existence is willy-nilly thrust into our hands, our fate is to make somethingif nothing else, the shape cut by the arc of our lives.
My parents saw corrosively the arc of their lives.
Making is the mirror in which we see ourselves.
But being is making: not only large things, a family, a book, a business: but the shape we give this afternoon, a conversation between two friends, a meal.
Or mis-shape.

"and from the hearts of infinite Pacifics, the thousand mermaids sing to them 'Come hither, broken-hearted; here is another life without the guilt of intermediate death; here are wonders supernatural, without dying for them. Come hither: bury thyself in a life which, to your now equally abhorred and abhorring, landed world, is more oblivious than death. Come hither! put up thy grave-stone, too, within the churchyard, and come hither, till we marry thee!'

Frank Bidart
Mourning glory By Elizabeth Schmidt DESIRE, by Frank Bidart. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 61 pages, $20. There's never been a more propitious time to read Frank Bidart, whose poetry emerges from the desire to create art out of the personal details of one's life, and from his unflinching interrogation of that desire. In verse, this impulse produces confessional poetry, and in prose, as we all well know these days, it produces memoir. Bidart's slim, intense new volume in part explores the emotional and artistic fallout that remains when one has told all, or at least some, in writing. For this reason it should be welcomed as an essential, profoundly illuminating companion to all the best-selling memoirs flooding the literary market of late. But before Bidart gets slotted for Oprah , one thing should be made clear: the use of autobiography in his work is a coded, highly intricate enterprise, and his poetry is some of the most difficult and painstakingly original written in America in the last 30 years, weaving quotes and philosophical fragments, vivid detail and stupefying abstraction, into a linguistic matrix that rarely follows the standard rules of punctuation and syntax. Finding the autobiographical thread in a Bidart poem is a little like finding a particular scrap of paper among the layers of an elaborate, sprawling Rauschenberg collage. Bidart has said that although he "had grown up obsessed with his parents," his poems are different from the work of his great mentor Robert Lowell, whose book

In these poems, Bidart melds the personal and the literary in order to raise emotional issues of the highest moment and greatest universality. The personal matter is the death of the artist and poet Joe Brainard, and the literary matter, from which Bidart borrows and with which he interacts, is drawn from the likes of Dante, Marcus Aurelius, and the Neoplatonist philosopher Plotinus. Love and death are the overarching themes of all the poems, and they are considered in terms of desire and destiny: of how that which is desiredlovedcomes to seem destinedinevitableand of how destiny understood as time defeats desire understood as illimitable yearning. Those two great emotional truths Bidart evokes by means of philosophical reflection, erotic realization, critical reaction, elegy, andin "The Return," which re-creates a cathartic incident from Tacitus' Annals , and in the concluding long poem, "The Second Hour of the Night," which tells a version of the myth of Myrrha that crucially differs from Ovid's in the Metamorphoses powerful storytelling. This is literature of a very high order, written to be carefully and slowly read and rewarding such reading with wonder-struck appreciation of human love.

Frank Bidart Awarded Bobbitt Prize
Bronze Bust Unveiled to Honor Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt
by Yvonne French A Library love story involving LBJ's sister spawned a poetry prize 10 years ago. This year, that prize, the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt prize, was awarded Oct. 22 to Frank Bidart. Mr. Bidart won the prize for his book Desire (1997, Farrar, Straus and Giroux). To commemorate the 10th year of the biennial prize, three former winners also read. Photo by Yvonne French "This is a distinguished prize awarded to distinguished poets," said Dr. Billington. Said Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry Robert Pinsky: "There is a risk in establishing a poetry prize as a memorial. Prizes can be baloney. A prize is as good as the people who win it. This prize has a wonderful, wonderful record." The $10,000 privately funded poetry prize is given on behalf of the nation. The prize is donated by the family of the late Mrs. Bobbitt of Austin, Texas, in her memory, and established at the Library of Congress. While she was a graduate student in Washington during the 1930s, Rebekah Johnson met O.P. Bobbitt when they both worked in the cataloging department at the Library. Bobbitt had matriculated to Washington from Texas by train on a ticket purchased from the sale of a cow. They later married and returned to Texas.
