To criticise the future
Historian Eric Hobsbawm tells Nicholas Wroe why Tony Blair annoys him
Saturday December 23, 2000
The Guardian

Shortly after moving to England in 1933 when he was aged 16, the historian Eric Hobsbawm had to decide whether to study history, modern languages or literature at Cambridge university. As a child he had lived in Vienna and Berlin, and so he says it was no contest. "If you were brought up in central Europe in the 1920s and 1930s, you were surrounded by history," he says. "I couldn't very well avoid it." His writing career began when he became the last pre-war editor of the student magazine Granta, but he didn't publish his first book until 20 years later. Primitive Rebels, his ground-breaking study of banditry, was published in 1959, along with, perhaps unexpectedly, a collection of his writing on jazz.

Blair: Which Project?

Everybody leads again with the latest Security Council negotiations on Iraq: Britain is considering introducing a plan to extend the March 17 deadline by about a week. The U.S. doesn't seem thrilled about that but is willing to go along. As the New York Times says in a two-column off-lead, British Prime Minister Tony Blair is in deep doo-doo if Britain takes part in a non-U.N. approved war. Various ministers have threatened to resign, and Blair could face a challenge from his own party. According to a poll cited by the Los Angeles Times , only 19 percent of the British support war without a U.N. OK. "We are busting a gut to see if we can get greater consensus in the council," said Britain's ambassador to the U.N., who 1) really did use that slang and 2) added, "Don't look beyond March." The LAT and NYT both have good details on the potential British plan, explaining that it will probably include a series of steps Iraq needs to take in order to prove it's disarming. The

The Los Angeles Times and Washington Post lead with the British government's now-public dossier detailing the status of Saddam Hussein's various weapons programs. The report concluded that Iraq could deploy some of its chemical and biological weapons within 45 minutes of an order being given. It also said Saddam has been looking to buy uranium from an undisclosed African country. The New York Times leads with new numbers from the Census Bureau showing that poverty increased last year. USA Today reefers the dossier and instead leads with news that about 200 U.S. troops have been dispatched to rescue 100 American children who have been trapped in a school in the Ivory Coast since a rebellion started there last week. Despite the Blair dossier's revelations, everybody cites experts concluding it doesn't have a smoking gun. "There really is nothing new here," said the editor of the defense journal

WE WELCOME YOUR COMMENTS! Main June 25, 2002 Happy Birthday Eric Arthur Blair! Who? Eric Arthur Blair wrote under the pseudonym George Orwell. Born on June 25th in 1903, Orwell is best known for his cautionary tales about the rise of the totalitarian state, and Animal Farm . In spite of its somewhat dated title, still contains lessons for us today, about what kind of government can emerge in a society that is perpetually at war. And don't forget Orwell's other lesser known works, including Keep the Aspidistra Flying , a bleak but witty novel about the foibles of the advertising industry, and The Road to Wigan Pier and Down and Out in Paris and London , true accounts of Orwell among the underclass on two continents. To date, Monassur consists of 13 people and continues to develop its business in new fields, such as businesses, yachting, special risks, life assurance and pension plans.
I n 1988, a secondary office was opened in France, in Valbonne, named Riviera Insurance Brokers , in order to offer a local service to the many foreigners who have settled in this area. The office was formed as an independent brokerage house, in order to offer the widest range of insurance programs possible. To date, Riviera consists of 5 people and is still growing, benefiting especially from its close proximity to Sophia Antipolis. I n 1993, following many trips to the South West of France

    TONY BLAIR IN HOSPITAL!
If you have a drop of Scottish blood in your veins, you'll enjoy this story by an unknown author, now doing the rounds of the Internet. British Prime Minister Tony Blair opened a new hospital in Edinburgh. After cutting the ribbon he went on a tour of the wards. He entered a ward filled with patients who did not seem to be suffering from any injury or obvious disability. He greeted a bearded man in a nearby bed, who replied: "Fair fa' your honest sonsie face, great chieftain o the pudden race!" Blair, somewhat bemused, smiled politely and moved on to another bed and asked the patient how he was getting on. The patient shook his head and replied: "Some hae meat and canna eat, and some wad eat that want it. But we hae meat and we can eat, and sae the Lord be thankit." Blair again nodded politely and turned to the next patient, an older man, wearing a Tam O'Shanter of a particularly bright plaid. When asked by Blair how he was keeping, the old man replied: "Wee sleekit cow'rin tim'urous beastie. O what panic's in thy breastie!" By this time the Prime Minister was totally befuddled and turning to the senior doctor who was accompanying him, whispered: "What sort of ward is this? Are they psychiatric patients?"
